Economy Title: TPP Explained (In Comic Book Cartoons) Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread Top • Page Up • Full Thread • Page Down • Bottom/Latest So Republicans are now against free trade?
#2. To: Pericles (#1) o Republicans are now against free trade? Most of us always have been. Ever heard of Pat Buchanan?
#3. To: A K A Stone (#2) (Edited) Most of us always have been. You don't count. I said GOP as in the party. And the same people who support free trade support the BS economic ideology of the GOP.
#4. To: Pericles (#3) And the same people who support free trade support the BS economic ideology of the GOP. What economic ideology does the GOP support that is BS?
#5. To: Pericles (#1) So Republicans are now against free trade? Some of these things are not as settled as they seem. For instance, in the 2014 elections, several strong Red states voted major increases in the minimum wage. The GOP is not friendly toward such changes and argues against a minimum wage. It is a staple of conservative ideology that raising the minimum wage is counterproductive. Yet the minimum wage hike passed easily. You see the same thing with Walmart raising their wages (and patting themselves on the back for it in their commercials). In addition, TPP is very secretive and many people think it was written by Hollywood (MPAA) and the record labels (RIAA) and Big Pharma and that seems true, given what we know of how the Canadian version passed in the dark of night. People also don't like the surrender of sovereignty, the idea that the taxpayers get fined if any company in their country violates TPP law, the provisions for trade governance by a pack of trade lawyers who rotate between lobbying for their industry and sitting as judges in trade matters. Look at my article from earlier tonight where Boehner and Ryan are deliberately trying to use IRS fines on paperwork errors by small businesses to fund the TIAA, a handout to unions. Normally, Dems love that and they voted against it which is why Boehner/Ryan are trying to round up GOP votes for a tax hike on small business from IRS fines. Does that sound like the usual GOP "no new taxes" pledge we've heard for decades? Something is rotten in Denmark. It's the TPP. And this president is the last person I would trust to negotiate such a trade pact.
#6. To: TooConservative (#0) Michael Goodwin, son of the plagiarist Doris Kearns Goodwin, protector of migrant farm workers, and detractor of large corporations:
#7. To: misterwhite (#6) detractor of large corporations We need a lot more of these detractors.
#8. To: TooConservative (#7) detractor of large corporations Thanks for posting this BTW, you and ODSS have been sharing some good posts about Obamatrade.
