The chairman of one of the world’s biggest luxury conglomerates is apparently deeply worried about where civilization is heading and what it means for his clients.

Johann Rupert, the founder and chairman of Richemont — which counts Cartier, Piaget and Montblanc among its business holdings — gave a speech that held several dystopian warnings pertaining to the coming future at the recent Financial Times Business of Luxury Summit in Monaco, reports Bloomberg.

The 65-year-old Rupert, who has an estimated net worth of about $7.5 billion, seemed deeply perturbed about the impending disappearance of the middle class due to robotics and artificial intelligence, which he said would “put hundreds of millions of people out of work.”  Rupert asked:

“How is society going to cope with structural unemployment and the envy, hatred and the social warfare? We are destroying the middle classes at this stage and it will affect us. It’s unfair. So that’s what keeps me awake at night.”

He added:

“We cannot have 0.1 percent of 0.1 percent taking all the spoils. It’s unfair and it is not sustainable.”

Among the 20 biggest shareholders in Richemont, Rupert obviously belongs to the portion of the population indirectly affected by the impending dysfunctionality of the middle class. He said:

“We are in for a huge change in society. Get used to it, and be prepared. Hopefully we will survive it, because we’re planning for it.”

The conference concluded in Monaco, where one in three of the population are millionaires, according to 2014 report from net wealth research firm WealthInsight.

According to a recent Oxfam report, the wealthiest 1% will own more than half of the world’s entire wealth by 2016.

Richemont elected not to return requests for comment.

So let's stop all technological progress, no, let's reverse all technological progress and return to earlier time to strike just that right balance in a controlled society where manual labor and human brainpower sustains a middle class that cannot adapt to the natural development of the quailities of education and skills that are the essence of the value of a man's labor. Yeah, that's what we need more uber government control. Now the first thing is for government to determine is exactly what percentage of the population will be designated middle class and implement a selection process to populate that percentage. Next the government must determine exactly how much of the world's wealth this class shall own. Yeah, this will eliminate all envy and hatred.

Why not? The stupid market is not doing this.

What will happen when automation replaces many human labors? In a few years no need for airline pilots, taxi drives, bus drivers, truck drivers and that is just one field.

I don't know how old you are but my college days were in the early '60s. I remember hearing more than once then that in the next 25 years or so because of technology we would have so much more leisure time that we will not know what to do with it. That hasn't happened, has it? The people that were making buggy whips in the late 1800's are now doing something else for a living.

So, what will happen when automation replaces many human labors?

I don't know how old you are but we are already living in this automated age and what this billionaire is talking about is already happening. We have historic unemployment that is systemic. We are working more and paid less because it is a 'buyer's market' for employers. That is why the benefit of this projected leisure time has not materialized more than anything else.

I even read a report that there maybe less need for doctors or nurses in the near future based on medical diagnosis machines being worked on.

Where did you get this tripe, from the up-dated Marxist advocacy manual?

When I go to department stores or hardware stores and see "made in China" on 1/3 of the goods on the shelves, when I hear of bridges being built with Chinese steel,, or see the number of vehicles on the road with foreign manufacturer's names written on them, it destroys the "systemic" premise in your argument.

There will be no decrease in need for medical personnel because the variety of medical tests, and the need to interpret them competently has exploded in the last 30 years.

Capish?

I have written on this subject before, and more thoroughly, here.

Yes simple ones like blood sugar and weight gain. But try doing a medical test which uses the equivalent of electrophorisis chromatography or microscopic examination at home, dumbass.

Technology may advance, but you won't. You'll die the same counteral asshole and juvenile irritant loser you are now.

Mit der Dummheit kämpfen Götter selbst vergebens, observes one of Schiller’s characters sagely: “Against stupidity the gods themselves struggle in vain.” To engage in further communication with you would make me a loser also.

Bye bye.
