Okay.

My mom (81 years old) has been a very avid reader ever
since the sun burst into flames. So about once a week
she goes to, yes, the library.
She likes mystery, history and romance.
Decades ago I bought her every Agatha Christie novel
that I thought she had not read. (I missed on a few -
she HAD read them.)

Nonetheless - I think - for either her birthday or
Christmas - I am going to buy her a Kindle.
Being an avid reader as she is - she is the perfect
candidate for one.

Anyone know anything about these cute little beasties?
Any help would be appreciated!

I have one,and I love it. Mine is the Kindle PaperWhite version, and the screen is backlit so there is no real glare and you can still read if the lights are out. Adjustable font sizes for people with vision problems, and you get all sorts of free book downloads from Amazon if you are a Prime member.

Besides that there are several places on the web you can download books for free.

I probably have 50 or so free books on my Kindle right now.

BTW,amazon is always running a sale of some kind on different Kindles. I think I paid $79.95 for mine a couple of years ago on sale, but have seen it on sale for as long as $59.95.

Just looked a few minutes ago and they are running at $129 and up.

...but have seen it on sale...

My mom has a Kindle in her future...

Sounds like the 'PaperWhite' is the way to go...

The upscale ones have features the paperwhite doesn't have, but I'm cheap and the paperwhite does everything I want it to do. I was to read books on it,period. Nothing else. Make sure you get her a Amazon Prime Account. That way she gets free books, movies, and tv shows from amazon, plus free shipping on anything they sell and ship.

If your mom doesn't have WiFi (or a neighbor willing to let her connect), she'll have to bring the Kindle to your house to get new content or go somewhere with free WiFi like a restaurant or a public library.

For $70 more, you can get the 3G Kindle Paperwhite. That makes the Amazon cloud storage for books much more attractive.

Unless she has WiFi or easy access to it, go for the 3G option for $70 more. You won't regret it. Then it will "just work", any time, anywhere. One less thing to explain to her. Also, it will make it easy to move books to/from the Cloud, use the dictionary and translator features. And it is a real bargain at that price anyway. One of these days, Amazon will start charging for the 3G service yearly, like they do for Amazon Prime. But if you buy one now, you'll be grandfathered in no matter what.

BTW, the Paperwhite is exactly the right choice. Your mom doesn't want apps or web browsing. And I think a Paperwhite can do email and very limited web browsing as well but for that, you'd have to jailbreak it so I wouldn't recommend that. BTW, you can always save web pages as PDF documents and email them to your mom that way. So you could clip web pages she'd like and send them to her free Kindle email account. She couldn't reply easily (unless jailbroken and then not too easily) but you could send her bits of different stuff like emails or most any document that you want her to see. You can also send her (unprotected) ebooks via email.

I have one of the original kindles with the 3G feature, -- and the map you posted shows me why it wont work. --- Thanks, -- I'm down in a canyon near Quincy Ca, within several hundred yards of reception on both sides of the canyon. -- I wonder if anyone makes an antenna that would pull in the 3G signal?

Anyone?

3G booster antennas have been around for a while. They can't cure every problem but they can make a big difference. I would say that Wilson is generally the leader in this segment of the industry. You might find a local dealer for them. The cheapo units in the $70-$120 range help when you just can't get quite enough signal. For serious boosting, like in canyons, you need a more serious unit in the $250-$500 range that requires some installation with a high mounted antenna (like on your roof) and an indoor broadcast unit that provides the amplified signal. Quite often, the difference in the height between the antenna and the indoor unit determines how effective the signal amplification is. You'll see them making remarks about needing to install the roof antenna at least 12' above the interior antenna to maximize its reception. The suitability of these amplifiers vary considerably by your location and topology and the location of the tower(s) you are trying to connect with.

Even with the pricier boosters, you can't always make it work. If you are in a canyon or blocked by trees or in mountains, you can't always overcome it. But if you get even 1 bar of signal while outdoors (or on your roof), you can often get enough boosting to make it worthwhile, not just for a Kindle but for any cellphone as well (either ATT or Verizon type cellphones). So it is more hospitable for your visitors who like to have their gadgets working when they drop by.

That's kind of a summary of what I learned when I was looking into installing a booster system for Verizon service in a fairly deep canyon location. I never did install it, didn't think I'd get a strong enough signal even if I spent the $500 to buy it.

You might watch on eBay to see if someone is selling one used. Less risk to try it out that way. Or if you are within several hundred yards of reception, you might try one of the cheaper boosters, providing they'll refund your money if it doesn't work. Amazon is pretty good about returns and they stock the Wilson units and some other brands.

Strangely enough, we get the Verizon service at the lodge building, not far from my cabin, but the Amazon 3G doesn't work.

Thanks for your advice..

It should just work then.

Maybe you should contact Amazon customer service. Tell them the Kindle 3g doesn't work at your cabin and it doesn't work at the nearby lodge, though the lodge does get Verizon coverage.

There's a lot of Kindles out there. They might already have reporting on your locale and what you can do about it. Let me repeat: there are a lot of Kindles out there! And Amazon is pretty fierce on customer service. They won't let Verizon or AT&T cheat you and Amazon is big enough to take on the cell companies directly.

A detailed description addressed to Amazon customer service is probably your best (and free) first step.
