Okay. My mom (81 years old) has been a very avid reader ever since the sun burst into flames. So about once a week she goes to, yes, the library. She likes mystery, history and romance. Decades ago I bought her every Agatha Christie novel that I thought she had not read. (I missed on a few - she HAD read them.) Nonetheless - I think - for either her birthday or Christmas - I am going to buy her a Kindle. Being an avid reader as she is - she is the perfect candidate for one. Anyone know anything about these cute little beasties? Any help would be appreciated!

I would opt for the Kindle White as it is easier to navigate. You will most likely still need to help her download books if she is not tech savvy. All Kindles are wifi capable and some have a 3G/4G capability. That one is good for those who do not have internet or wifi. You can also download books on line via USB. If you get her one of the Kindle Fire editions, she can download and read books and also download movies and TV programs. Best to get the Amazon Prime membership as this will allow her to read some books for free and get some old movies for free as well. The Fire editions don't come with a 3G/4G capability from what I know.

...if she is not tech savvy... That's what I need to know. Which version of the thing do I need for the person who is COMPLETELY NON 'tech savvy'. I don't want to speak ill of my Mom - but it's the truth. And should I / we even bother with the thing at all? Eh? I know that you cannot make that decision...

If she has never touched a computer or sent emails or texts, then a lot of Kindle stuff will have to be taught. A lot of seniors do make the 'tech' leap. My aunt had a basic Kindle edition and used it a lot. My cousins helped her download some books but she got the hang of it. She did use a computer though and actively sent out emails. So something to consider. I remember buying my father (then 85) a DVD player. An inexpensive portable one he could use to watch movies. He never used it.

I think local libraries and maybe even churches have courses for adults & seniors the are dirt cheap and sometimes free. Just my two cents.

My dad finally bought a PC maybe ten or fifteen years ago. Being home alone is often frustrating for beginners. I suggested he get himself a tutor for a few hours a week which he did and now he's an avid computer user for email, shopping... I built my dad a computer out of spare parts about 15 or so years ago. I saw him wasting away in front of the TV and said 'No'. 'NOT gonna end this way...' And ya know? It worked! He messed with that thing until he finally bought himself a new/used Lenovo machine. He spent years corresponding via email with a friend in California who was best man at his and my mom's wedding. They had been out of touch for decades. That alone was worth it. I think those two computers bought the man 15 or so extra years of life! THAT is a serious bargain, IMO! He made it to 89 - a few months short of 90. Not bad! PS: I was the man's tutor - And it was the best time I ever spent - even though frustrating as heck for for both of us!
