Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), with wife Karen (R), daughter Bella, 7, and the rest of the family, announces his candidacy for the 2016 Republican nomination for president at Penn United Technologies May 27, 2015 in Cabot, Pennsylvania, This is the second run for Santorum, who finished runner-up in 2012 to nominee Mitt Romney. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum launched his bid for the Republican presidential nomination on Wednesday with a conservative, blue-collar message. Promising to protect American workers, he blamed factors like "big government" and immigration for flat wages.

"From day one, we will work to bring back America and put Americans back to work," Santorum said to a mostly older, modest-sized crowd at Penn United Technologies, a manufacturing company in Cabot, Pennsylvania. "Over the last 20 years, we've brought into this country, legally and illegally, 35 million mostly unskilled workers. As a result, over that same period of time, workers' wages and family incomes have flatlined."

Santorum said that "big business" and Hillary Clinton, the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, would like to see a "massive influx" of unskilled workers. Clinton, he said, wants to see an increase in unskilled workers because she "wants votes." By contrast, Santorum said, "My priority is you, the American worker."

Santorum, who has built a reputation over the decades as a staunch social conservative, appeared on stage with his wife and seven of his eight children. He touted his past accomplishments in the Senate and noted that he was elected twice to the Senate in a blue state (while failing to mention his 17-point loss to Democratic Sen. Bob Casey in 2006). Santorum also highlighted his 2012 presidential campaign, referring to himself as an "underdog" for winning 11 states in the Republican primary.

"We got four million votes not because I stood for something, but someone -- the American worker," he said.

The former senator called for a flat tax rate, promised to revitalize domestic manufacturing and proposed shrinking the size of the federal government.

CBS News' Alex Romano contributed to this report.

Santorum is an ignorant fraud who will abolish the IRS for the benefit of the wealthy corporations and impose a highly oppressive/regressive 30% sales tax on blue collar workers and call it "fair."

Your fat cat corporate banker buddies will have to pay taxes now.

Those that buy the most, the rich, will pay the most. No more loopholes for Hillary and the limousine liberals either, Boo hoo!

Santorum's tax policy is not bad, but he sucks on everything else.

He is solid on right to life and liberty for yet to be born humans.

Santorum will be fighting for the same votes as Cruz.

And Huck.

Santorum is against liberty for anyone. He's a totalitarian statist warmonger who wants oppressive tyranny and death for all, from conception onward.

You're being both naive and foolish...
The rich "buy" very little... they invest.
And you can bet your bippy that their investments will be totally exempt from Santorum's sales tax... and all the less wealthy people will pay all the tax because there's nothing left in their paycheck to invest.

Santorum is very solid on right to life.

His tax policy is lousy.

I don't know any of his other positions.

If Santorum is the candidate, I'll vote for him against the Dem, because Dems are babykillers, and I believe that Santorum will name strict right-to-lifers to the Courts.

I'd rather run over my foot with a lawnmower than vote for this big spending, big government buffoon.

Santorum voted for Medicare part D; No Child Left Behind; the 2002 pork barrel transportation bill, complete with bridges to nowhere; and the Iraq War. Then he supported liberal Arlen Specter over Pat Toomey -- Specter provided the 60th vote for Obamacare.

If the good people of Pennsylvania hadn't booted Santorum out of office in 2006, he would have likely voted for the GM bailout and the Wallstreet bankster bailout as well.

Oh, and he also basically stole $100,000 from the taxpayers of Pennsylvania

How anyone can be fooled by this con-artist is beyond belief.

Absolutely true.

They also want to see un-educated voters ignorant about things like the Bill of Rights so they can continue with their program to deconstruct America with voter approval.

Of course they will. The people who vote on taxes are their employees. Things like that is why the rich pay them.

Nope, it's you who is being both naive and foolish...

The rich buy a lot, and most of what they buy NOW is written off, untaxed, --- using various tax evasion schemes.

And you can bet your bippy that EVERYONES investments will be totally exempt from the fair tax... and that the less wealthy people will pay very little tax because basic living expenses will be exempt under a yet to be resolved 'prebate' system.

Thus, the rest of the paycheck will be theirs to invest, if they so choose.
