A Georgia mother and substitute teacher says she was arrested and placed in shackles because of her son's unexcused absences. Julie Giles reportedly wrote on Facebook that a warrant had been issued for her arrest after her son tallied 12 unexcused absences from school. The total is six more than the Screven County school district allows. Giles argued that her son's doctor re-issued a note for three of the absences, meaning she would be arrested over a total of three absences. Giles said she was briefly placed in ankle shackles, with police saying it was normal procedure. "Actually I was not fingerprinted, but I was shackled and they took my mug shot, which will be in our local newspaper," she said. Giles was released and given a court date in July, but faces jail time. Giles said her son is an A and B student, but often misses school because of illness. Due to higher copays than she can afford, she said sometimes she must keep her children home without being able to get a doctor's note.

It is a CRIME to decide when your child attends school? I commonly kept my children out of school "just because". Family vacation, travel for a holiday, or making up for a snow day. So many reasons I made a decision, and it is NONE OF THE SCHOOLS BUSINESS. They exist to SERVE ME and others of the community. WE as a group do not exist to serve THEM.
Screven County, Georgia is a heavily Republican county. This is not liberal Democrat government at work here, it's conservative Republican government at work.
Her reaction and comment caused me to recall a famous story about sex and money that I have heard in myriad variations. A man asks a woman if she would be willing to sleep with him if he pays her an exorbitant sum.
Sure it is. Schools are funded based on daily attendance. No kid, no money for that kid. In San Diego County, for example, public schools lost out on at least $102 million in state funding because of absences. Less state money mean more local money. More local money means higher property taxes. F**k that.

She replies affirmatively.
He then names a paltry amount and asks if she would still be willing to sleep with him for the revised fee.
The woman is greatly offended and replies as follows:
She: What kind of woman do you think I am?
He: We’ve already established that. Now we’re just haggling over the price.
