The federal government spent $100 billion providing food assistance to Americans last year, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO).
The lion’s share of spending comes from the food stamp program, which gave benefits to an average 46 million Americans in 2014, at a cost of $74.6 billion, according to a testimonyfrom the GAO’s Director of Education, Workforce, and Income Security Kay E. Brown before the House Subcommittee on Nutrition Wednesday.
The national school lunch program was second, costing $11.3 billion, followed by the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) at $7.1 billion.
Other spending included $1.9 billion for nutrition assistance for Puerto Rico, and $10.7 million for the “Special Milk Program.”
Brown said there is a potential for overlap and “inefficient use of federal funds” due to the government’s “complex network of 18 food assistance programs, administered by three federal agencies,” which are unsure how effective the programs are.
“In 2010, research GAO reviewed suggested that participation in seven of these programs was associated with positive outcomes, such as improving nutrition among low-income households,” Brown said. “Little was known about the effectiveness of the remaining 11.”
The GAO provided a list of the 18 federal programs, which together served a total 109.9 million Americans in 2014. The list only provides the total number of participants for each program, and does not take into account the potential for individuals to participate in more than one program.
Brown said the GAO urged the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) address potential overlaps in their programs. The USDA commissioned a study on redundant programs in 2013, and then “decided to study the impact of participation in multiple food assistance programs on the nutritional status of participants.”
“While such a study will provide important information, it does not address GAO’s recommendation,” Brown said. “GAO continues to believe that further action is needed.”

Just sent him an e-mail through his Senate website:
Dear Senator McCain,
During your address to the Building and Construction Trades Department Conference, you publicly offered to pay $50 an hour for people willing to come to Yuma, Arizona for the summer to pick lettuce.
I would like to sign up for this position. I am an educated, professional, American citizen, and would really enjoy the extra money I could earn if I switched to a career picking lettuce.
You did not provide any contact information during your address. I understand that you don't use e-mail or the internet, so I must assume that applicants must submit their resumes to you via the U.S. Mail. If so, which address should I send it to? I've tried finding your home address, but I've come across seven different home addresses and I'm unsure which would be appropriate.
Thank you for your time, and I look forward to a new career in the lucrative lettuce industry.

I graduated from college and work 40 hours a week, but still go further into debt every month- mostly because of my son's medical condition. I would love to make $50/hour. So, McCain, where do I sign? I am more than willing to work hard.

Don't belittle the difficulty of the job. I grew up in a farming community, and have picked several types of farm crops. Believe me it is not fucking easy.
Still for 50 dollars an hour I'd pick pimples of McCain's ass for 10 hours a day.

I also grew up on a farm, and picked squash, tomatoes, peppers, sweet corn, WATERMELONS, etc.
I agree, it can be extremely hot and tiring work. But let's be honest, we worked for 5 dollars an hour. For $50 an hour, we could've hired up to an including some lawyers in town to pick our crops.
The fact of the matter is, McCain is out of touch with how hard some people work for a living in this country.

Poverty is relative and objective at the same time.
In most of America owning a car is a necessity - to be able to commute to work, shopping, doctor etc ... In many countries it is not necessary. In a warm tropical country having shoes or heating is not a necessity - in northern Russia it is. Eskimo (until recently at least) has to have hunting tools and kayak. Etc, etc ...
Poor are those who can barely make ends meet while destitute are those who cannot do it without assistance or going into debt.
Real middle class are those who have sufficient disposable income and possessions enabling them to have free time, be active in culture, society or politics, and invest/save.
The rich are those who do not need to have income and can hire others.
Because "the poor" are defined as some bottom percentage of the population.
This is being done for accounting convenience. Percentage is defined to reflect real definitions presented above.
