Title: Spiders fall from the sky in Australia leaving what enthusiasts call 'Angel Hair'

In the more ridiculous news of the day, scientists have confirmed that it is possible for the eight-legged creatures to be falling from the sky in southern Australia.

Earlier this month astonished locals told The Sydney Morning Herald that their area had been “invaded by spiders”.

Ian Watson, who lives in the New South Wales’ town of Goulburn near the east coast, said the invasion of spiders – while beautiful – was also “annoying”.

"The whole place was covered in these little black spiderlings and when I looked up at the sun it was like this tunnel of webs going up for a couple of hundred metres into the sky," he told the The SMH.

Other residents also reported seeing the spiders on 4 May, with one woman claiming she saw what appeared to be silk thread “floating through the sky”.

Her sighting is due to a migration technique commonly associated with spiders, explains naturlist Martyn Robinson from the Australian Museum.

‘Ballooning,’ usually used by baby spiders, sees the arachnoids climb to the top of tall vegetation before releasing a silk balloon and allowing the wind to carry them. Spiders have been recorded travelling up to three kilometres using this method.

"They can literally travel for kilometres … which is why every continent has spiders. Even in Antarctica they regularly turn up but just die," he told The SMH.

The mass migration of spiders recently means that occasionally you can have entire areas covered in the thin gossamer of spiders, leading to some enthusiasts calling it Angel Hair.

Angel hair pasta - which I can no longer eat due to the
too high a glycemic index (carbs). Dang diabetes...

But in moderation I can eat whole wheat - or tri-color - vegetable pasta -
but only in moderation.

I have no interest in eating spiders, though.

Angel hair pasta

You dream about food in living color, don't you?     : )

I was almost expecting an angel hair pasta post. You didn't disappoint.

But then, I had a grandfather who was a man who relished his food so I do understand the impulse.

Australia is HELL.

In fairness, Brazil had quite a similar spider outbreak a few years back as the article links demonstrate. We had several articles at LP on it.

My craving continuity and consistency in science news is surely the sign of a small mind.

Ha!
Sorry that I didn't get right back to you -
I was finishing making a quesadilla and
putting in the oven. Late lunch - ya know...

Look for Dreamfields Pasta at your local supermarket, Chuck.
It has 65% lower Glycemic Index than regular pasta.
I have a box of Dreamfields spaghetti that I got at Krogers in my cupboard right now (and a box of macaroni elbows). But their website says it comes in angel hair, linguini, penne rigate, rotini & lasagna too. Plus it's at Walmart, or you can order online, or you can find other grocery stores near you by entering your zipcode.

I wouldn't dream of interrupting that.

I'll sit back and wait for the pictures of your meal. : )

... Dreamfields Pasta ...

I don't know if they've changed their recipe (or label)
(they'd be dumb not to) however they were in some
trouble due to mislabeling their product.

I said 'What the heck' - and sent away for my part of
of the class action lawsuit money (either $6.88 or $8.66)
Woo Hoo! So buying the stuff may or may not be a good idea.
I got my check and cashed it. Even if I'm ahead of the game -
It's a major waste of time anyway...
