Science-Technology Title: My new PC runs! I'm posting this even though no one my care. It's a 3.8 ghz quad core AMD (4 ghz 'turbo' mode). I assembled it from a kit from Tiger Direct. #2. To: Chuck_Wagon (#0) Hey congratulations.
#3. To: Fred Mertz (#1) Yay! Hey - that's why it took almost a month.
#4. To: BobCeleste (#2) ... congratulations. ... Thanks! As if a new computer is OH SO IMPORTANT - and life-changing. LOL!
#5. To: Fred Mertz (#1) Yay! Quite frankly - the big problem is making SPACE in
#6. To: Chuck_Wagon (#5) I have various crap all over the the floor. That is the main issue.
So you and your housekeeper finally knocked it all off the table, eh? Congrats!! What OS are you gonna install?
#7. To: Willie Green (#6) What OS are you gonna install? Windows 7. Mostly.
#8. To: Willie Green (#6) No Willie, I haven't diddled the housekeeper. (Yet)
#9. To: Chuck_Wagon (#0) Sure it took me almost a month - so what. So...we all kinda lost interest because you were being so pokey. : ) Should be smooth sailing now for a few years. For average use with internet and basic office apps, you're good to go. You should keep an eye out on RAM prices and go to 8GB or 16GB when the RAM hits its sweet spot, i.e. when it's at its lowest price before they phase it out and the price of the RAM modules starts going back up. Back on WinXP and Vista, extra RAM didn't help much past 2GB other than certain specialized programs (like Photoshop). With newer versions of Windows, it can use all that RAM very well, the more the merrier. For instance, with 16GB on my Mac Mini quad-core, I am running Firefox with about 30 tabs open and an email program and a 512MB WinXP virtual machine and Android Studio and a bunch of other piddly util programs and yet I use no swap file at all and still have 5GB of RAM free. Everything runs silky smooth, even when I load it up with a bunch of programs running at once. When you eliminate the horrible old swap file, you'd be surprised how well these newer OSes can run. Everything runs almost instantly. And you usually don't have to quit any program, just let it keep running, no problem.
#10. To: TooConservative (#9) Windows 7 has been (almost) a dream.

I haven't succumbed to the temptation yet, but the current #1 Best Seller on Amazon is the $99 Fire HD 7 Tablet.

To: Willie Green (#13) I haven't succumbed to the temptation yet, but the current #1 Best Seller on Amazon is the $99 Fire HD 7 Tablet. Ditto. Now - back to the thread topic - Uhh - my 'Home office' is really to small to fit that designation.
