American Pharoah 5-2 morning-line favorite for Derby

It took some time for American Pharoah's name to be called during Wednesday's post-position draw for the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby (G1), but once it was his connections were more than happy to take 18 post considering the rail was still open at that point.
Campaigned by breeder Ahmed Zayat, the Eclipse Award-winning colt was installed as the 5-2 favorite for Saturday's Run for the Roses by oddsmaker Mike Battaglia. His undefeated stablemate Dortmund (Dortmund), owned by Kaleem Shah Inc., was made the second choice at 3-1 after drawing post 8.
"He's a horse that gets going. He's quick. He'll be right there in the mix," trainer Bob Baffert said of Dortmund, before adding about his other runner, "He's fast. American Pharoah is fast. It's OK. It's good. Anything but being down there.

"It will be tougher to watch one in there, so whichever one breaks the best I'm going to key on him."

Battaglia gave just one other runner single-digit odds ahead of the Derby. Once-beaten Carpe Diem (Giant's Causeway), hero of the Blue Grass S. (G1) and Tampa Bay Derby (G2) in his last pair of starts, was placed in post 2 and garnered an 8-1 morning line.

"In a perfect world, I would have liked to have been more toward the middle with Carpe Diem (and Materiality [Afleet Alex] who drew post 3)," trainer Todd Pletcher said. "But he's a good gate horse and he'll have to get away from there quickly. That's pretty much true whatever your draw is in this race. Materiality is a good gate horse, too, so if he gets out he ought to be fine."

Post time for the Derby, the 11TH of 13 races Saturday, is 6:34 p.m. (EDT). Gates open Saturday at 8 a.m. with the first race scheduled for 10:30 a.m. The Kentucky Derby will be carried by NBC Sports with a 3 1/2-hour telecast from 4-7:30 p.m.
