If gay marriage is legally viewed as a “civil rights issue,” as may happen with the Supreme Court’s ruling on the subject in June, then it becomes a broader religious liberty concern, not just a marriage issue, said Reverend Rafael Cruz, adding that then pastors will have to choose between obeying an “unjust” law and obeying God and potentially going to prison.
Pastor Cruz, who is the father of Senator Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), made his remarks during an interview with conservative leader Phyllis Schlafly on her radio program “Eagle Forum Live.”
“We need to realize that the attack on marriage is more than just an attack on marriage, it actually goes to the heart of religious freedom,” said Pastor Cruz.
“Because, you see, what is going to come next -- and this is part of the danger of what may happen out of the Supreme Court in June -- is that if marriage of anybody-with-anybody becomes a civil rights issue,” he said, “then they are going to come to churches and force pastors to violate their religious convictions.”
“And so it is going to come to America to where a pastor is going to be faced with a decision: Do you obey a law that is not only unjust but violates your core principles, or do you obey God and face prison?” said Pastor Cruz.
“This is the dilemma that America’s pastors are going to be facing, if this issue is labeled a civil rights issue,” he said. “It goes way beyond marriage to actually violate the religious freedom of people of faith.”
In June, the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule on whether state bans on homosexual marriage are constitutional. Currently, same-sex marriage is legal in 37 states and illegal in 13 states.
Rev. Rafael Cruz fought against the Communists in Cuba, was arrested there and tortured. He fled the island in 1957 at age 18. He eventually settled in Texas and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2005. His Dallas-based church also operates Christian ministries in Mexico and Central America. His wife, Eleanor Wilson Cruz, was born in Wilmington, Del.

He was arrested by Batista for being a communist.
He was a well known pro-Castro activist in Austin Texas.

Get the govt out of the marriage business. Why are Judges now holy men that can marry people? In some cases it's whoever is behind the glass at the DMV that marries you.

Senator Rand Paul gave an interview to National Review about his libertarian approach to Republican policy, with an emphasis on national defense, given his spectacular filibuster of CIA nominee John Brennan over domestic drone strikes. But he also had some interesting comments on the subject of gay marriage, where he said he wanted to “shake up the Republican position.”
“I’m an old-fashioned traditionalist. I believe in the historic and religious definition of marriage,” said Paul. “That being said, I’m not for eliminating contracts between adults. I think there are ways to make the tax code more neutral, so it doesn’t mention marriage. Then we don’t have to redefine what marriage is; we just don’t have marriage in the tax code.”

Why bother trying to deny it, or lying that he was an anti-communist fighter? It's just not true. The kid pretty much had to choose between two crappy dictators, so there was really no hope of a good end, in Cuba.

IIRC, Castro was another revolutionary who, along with Ho Chi Mihn, was fond of quoting the American Declaration of Independence.
Lots of folks got duped by the communists before they figured out what they were.

In most states to my knowledge that is what happens, minus the secular ceremony.
When I was married in NY State, wife to be and me went to the local court house got a marriage certificate and then before being married in her Catholic church had to have the priest sign the certificate.
You are probably suggesting that the clergy should be cut out of the secular loop on the state paperwork?

Yes! Let the state paperwork be separated from the Christian Faith. Get their paperwork for the other paperworks and keep the true marriage within the Church, intact.

One should get the whole civil marriage/ceremony package done/completed/finished before the court clerk. Clerks do not need even to know that you get the true marriage in the Church, priest does not need to touch or see their papers.

Yes, as you admit, "the kid pretty much had to choose between two crappy dictators." Except at the time, Castro wasn't yet the bloody dictator he became. Instead he'd been peddling an idealist egalitarianism that opposed Batista's rampant corruption and oppressive regime. Cruz's father can't be blamed for the monster Castro became. And NEITHER should Ted Cruz be smeared by association, nor in this manner.
No one is denying your "facts." Just the relevance and timing of the elder Cruz's situational politics some 60 years ago, and without any context. The story NOT revealed: The US gubmint, State Dept, and media ALL didn't deem Castro that badly. In fact he was regarded as a potential reformer and puppet. His goals were seemingly egalitarian, but quickly changed once he took power as one more bloody, totalitarian Commie. THAT is NOT the Fidel Castro Cruz's father supported.
But MOST of all, WHY should this "revelation" be a reflection on Ted Cruz and his candidacy? Or his commitment to restoring honor and dignity to the office of the Presidency; his high level of morals and ethics, and his commitment to restoring respect of the US Constitution and of this broken nation?
Hondo, if you're going to try and advance your favorite candidate -- Rand Paul -- try doing so on merit and issues, and NOT Alinsky-ing him. Leave that BS and propaganda for the Left and it's minions.

I find it fascinating that the media (and certain Rand Paul fans, as we'll as the Karl Rove Machine) is suddenly VERY curious about the minutiae of Republican Presidential candidates' fathers. Yet NOT at all interested in the blank-slate deep dark subversive secrets of Bubba Clinton's daddy (and mommy.) Or 0bola's phantom daddies (BOTH of them along with his mommy.) Or for that matter, the scandalous daddy of JFK.
