Norway Nervous Over Sold Naval Base: Now Fears Kremlin at Its Doorstep

The Norwegian authorities are gravely upset over a secret naval base they sold two years ago: what makes them panic over the facility they just recently deemed unnecessary is that it is rented by a fleet of Russian research vessels, which, experts believe is “no joking matter”.

Olavsvern, a former Royal Norwegian Navy auxiliary base which was carved into a mountain just outside the city of Tromso, is now the centerpiece of heated debates.

The country’s navy seemed to be in no need of the base, which resembled the lair of a James Bond villain: in addition to port facilities, it has a 25,000 square meter mountain facility which features tunnels with direct access to sea for vessels. It has a dock for submarines and a helipad.

It was closed down in 2009 and put up for sale in 2011. The base was finally sold in 2013, however, at a third of the government's original asking price: 38.1 million Norwegian kroner (€4.4 mln) instead of the initially announced 105 million Norwegian kroner (€12.1mln).

The base was acquired by businessman Gunnar Wilhelmsen.

The sale of the facility to his investor group Triko AS was then approved by the Norwegian Defense Ministry and NATO, as neither of them had a need for the base.

Ironically enough, the prime minister who saw the sale through, Jens Stoltenberg, is now NATO’s secretary-general.

The buyers then wanted to use the former naval base as a maintenance center for rigs and subsea equipment that could be used for Arctic drilling.  However, plans changed and they rented it out to a fleet of Russian research vessels.

According to Newsweek, one of the recently arrived ships at Olavsvern is the Akademik Nemchinov, which belongs to Sevmorneftegeofizika, a Russian geophysics company that specializes in taking seismic measurements in deep and shallow waters.

“Seismic surveys are a bona fide area of international research, so seismic research vessels docking in another country is not unusual,” the magazine writes. “But Sevmorneftegeofizika is not just any seismic research firm: it counts among its clients both Gazprom and a host of other firms fully or partly owned by the Kremlin.”

“Russian research vessels are part of the Russian government’s sea power,” the magazine quotes Göran Frisk, a retired top Swedish naval commander as saying. “The Russian [naval force's] most important task is making sure that the country’s nuclear submarines can move freely in the world’s oceans. The Russian research vessels are no joking matter. It’s incomprehensible that the Norwegian government could make such a gaffe.”

The retired naval commander also claims that Russian research vessels off the Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian coasts also undock mini-submarines for surveillance and warfare preparations, and investigate the seabed and hydrographic conditions.

To make matters worse for the Royal Norwegian Navy, it later emerged that the naval base was "crucial for the protection of Norway’s sovereignty".

“Olavsvern was of strategic importance to a robust, Norwegian and NATO defense in the north,” according  to Oyvind Korsberg, an MP for the Tromso region, where Olavsvern is situated.

Those, however, who reside in the area of "potential danger" seem not to be that concerned.

“We hope that the new owner will bring as many vessels as possible to Olavsvern, which will benefit the local economy,” said Mayor Jens Johan Hjort of the city of Tromso.

Meanwhile, the authorities' only recourse now is to buy the facility back. However, as Newsweek rightfully noted, “there’s no indication that Wilhelmsen is prepared to sell.”

This is wildly comedic as NATO debacles go.

Ironically enough, the prime minister who saw the sale through, Jens Stoltenberg, is now NATO’s secretary-general.

Icing on the cake. LOL.

Rich little Norway dumped a needed base just as the race for the Arctic in security and energy starts heating up.

Some Russian asshole got the lease and it will cost them through the nose to ever get it back from him. Not to mention the sheer humiliation.

And all the secrets of the base have been exposed, lowering its value as a NATO asset.

A real FUBAR, all in public view.

Oops, forgot to include a shot of the big underground dry dock. Obviously, this place is much nicer than that huge old Soviet sub base down in Crimea (Balaklava base).

A definite LOLAYDA. This is a huge embarrassment for NATO and for Norway.

Vlad had to be laughing his ass off that one of his buddies grabbed this excellent base for only 4.4 million euros (about $7M US). Hardly even a pittance.

Now Norway has to decide if they are going to spend billions to build a new Arctic base while the Russkies enjoy the sweet base they got for peanuts.

That base could easily have been mothballed and cost Norway almost nothing in maintenance. What were they thinking?

With allies like this...

"“Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said." (Matthew 28:5,6)

They could have used the facility for just about anything.

A movie set, sound studio, research lab, even a giant wine and beer cellar.

I know, right?

NATO without America is just a joke.

NATO is just a synonym for "America" so EUropeans can still feel good about themselves and play dressup games of we're-still-world-powers while Uncle Sam pat their little hands and says, "There, there, don't worry your pretty little heads about it."

How does anyone say NATO without starting to giggle? I suppose they train the diplos and the generals not to titter when the subject comes up.

I'm not even sure that Vlad was behind this little grab. I think it was a massive SNAFU.

Of course, Norway is the country that gave Obola a Peace Prize just as he announced major increases to suppress resistance fighters in our occupation of Afghanistan.

The sobering thing is that the Norwegians are probably our best NATO allies at this point. They're rich and they are willing to spend a little more than the rest on defense and not cheat so much (like by counting pensions as defense spending).

Most of the Brits are still good fighters. Their government signed on to some unwise Euro treaties which tied their hands a bit in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Most of the NATO nations have great special forces which we used in GWOT.

The Polish have some hard piping SF used early in Iraq. The newer Eastern members are still good soldiers and not afraid of a fight.

Other than that NATO EUs take up space in high command posts, fail to bathe and refuse to put on underarm deodorant.

Sure but how many do they have? How well are they equipped?

And we know their air forces are very weak after they exhausted themselves and failed to kill Ghaddafi. They whined they'd run out of bombs and missiles and slunk back to their home bases.

NATO is a paper tiger without America.

Every Western nation (and many Eastern) have well equipped special forces.
