One of the Affordable Care Act's biggest foes will be signing his family up for Obamacare after all, CNN reports.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz previously had been receiving health insurance benefits through his wife Heidi's job. But Cruz on Monday announced he will seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, so his wife took an unpaid leave of absence for the duration of his campaign, and that makes her ineligible for company benefits.

Heidi Nelson Cruz is a managing director at the Houston office of Goldman Sachs. On Monday, during his announcement, Cruz stressed again that he wants to repeal the entire law as soon as possible.

"We'll be getting new health insurance and we'll presumably do it through my job with the Senate, and so we'll be on the federal exchange with millions of others on the federal exchange," Cruz told CNN Tuesday afternoon.

CNN termed Cruz's move onto the federal exchange as "ironic." CNN's Dana Bash appeared dumbfounded.

"But senator, for right now, the irony is just kind of unbelievable that you have made your name fighting against Obamacare and now you're going to sign up getting your insurance through that very process: Obamacare," Bash told him.

But Cruz dismissed that interpretation, saying he is only following the law.

"I believe we should follow the text of every law, even [a] law I disagree with," Cruz said. "It's one of the real differences — if you look at President Obama and the lawlessness, if he disagrees with a law he simply refuses to follow it or claims the authority to unilaterally change."

And Cruz said he will continue fighting to overturn Obamacare.

"What is problematic about Obamacare is that it is killing millions of jobs in this country and has killed millions of jobs," Cruz told CNN. "It has forced millions of people into part-time work. It has caused millions of people to lose their insurance, to lose their doctors and to face skyrocketing insurance premiums. That is unacceptable."

Earlier Tuesday, Cruz also stressed to The Des Moines Register, which first broke the story, that he is committed to seeing the law abolished.

"I believe in 2017 a new president, a Republican president, will sign legislation repealing every word of it. There are a fair number of Republicans in Washington and elsewhere who have quietly and privately given up on that fight, and I have not," he said.

Democrats could not contain their glee. The Democratic National Committee immediately fired off the Register article to reporters with a subject line referencing the number of people who gained coverage through the law: "16.4 million + 1."

Cruz could go without insurance, or his family could get its coverage directly from an insurance company at what would likely be a far higher rate than is available via an exchange. Doing so would mean Cruz would not get the contribution from his employer to help offset the full cost of his coverage.

Asked about his plans for healthcare insurance on Tuesday, Rick Tyler, a Cruz spokesman, said Cruz and his family had not yet settled on an option or the financial implications of such a choice.

"Let's let them make a decision on what coverage they'll get before we start speculating on every variable," Tyler said.

Cruz has been a vocal critic of the healthcare law and, in 2013, set in motion a partial government shutdown as part of an unsuccessful effort to choke off funding for the law. Democrats continued to highlight Tuesday night that Cruz is now enrolling in a program he frequently criticizes.

"The Affordable Care Act, by design, helps Americans who have gaps in employment get coverage, and it's working," Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Holly Shulman said. "We encourage others to follow presidential candidate Ted Cruz to www.HealthCare.gov and get covered."

Cruz said he would go under Obamacare now and work to repeal it. All too often, candidates have said one thing to be elected but change their tune later. I really don't trust any of the politicians. Candidates who are serious about defending the Constitution or the American way of life will not be allowed to win.

I'm curious as to how all of this is going to play out.

He may have something in mind by doing this as a way to make a public spectacle of how bad this really is (cause some people still think ObozoCare is better than sliced bread) or he'll just do what Don is implying.

"Cruz could go without insurance, or his family could get its coverage directly from an insurance company at what would likely be a far higher rate than is available via an exchange."

Other than Obamacare, those were his only other options.

Going without health insurance would have a) been irresponsible, b) set a bad example for other Americans, and c) been against the law. Obviously, that's out.

He could have purchased insurance on the open market rather than through the Senate, but imagine the indignation and the howling of the press and the Democrats -- "He's too good for Obamacare" ... "He's rich and he can afford it, meaning he's out of touch with the average citizen" ... "One insurance plan for Ted Cruz and the rich and one for the rest of us poor shlubs".

If I were Ted Cruz, I'd simply turn it around and ask, "What would you have done?" or "What do you think I should have done?"

By singling out Cruz, that tells me the press and the Democrats are terrified of him. Which makes me like him even more.

"What do you think I should have done?"

If he is really against Obamacare, he should have set a better example than joining the Socialists. Examples and words mean things. The left can now point out that Obamacare is such a good thing, even those against it are joining.

A bold move.

Now he can personally pick apart Obolocare as a recipient. During the campaing he can say "my family has encountered x,y, and z with Obolocare and here is where it's wrong and we can change it."

Bold and strategic move. I like it.

He also took away a counter campaign meme from the Dims. They would have said "Cruz has a rich man's policy you can't afford and does not care if you have health insurance." So he took that away from them. Smart. Now he can claim "I like you can't stand Obolocare."

He just took a Dem campaign attack tactic from them. Did is strategically.

Do you really believe the Cruz household with his wife working for Goldman Sachs said "honey with you now unemployed working on my campaign, we can't affort a private policy?"

No, he took away a campaign attack. It was coming: "Ted Cruz wants to take away your Obolacare...he doesn't care he has his own private insurance."

By jumping in the same mud pit with most of Americans, he just threw down the gauntlet. He is going to subject himself and his family to the same burdens as fellow Americans. He just destroyed a good Dem tactic with a strategic move.

Not bad.

I'm curious as to how all of this is going to play out.

Me too.

I'm thinking this is strategic in that Cruz is subjecting himself to what other Americans are enduring with Obolocare. Also a strategic move to take away a Dim attack ad: "Ted Cruz is rich and doesn't care about your healthcare."

He just took that away from them.

Just think. Now he can say "my wife tried to get a mammogram and was denied by Obolocare."

That would not go over well with even the feminazis and Komen folks.

On that thought...Army doctor friend of mine had a little tidbit for me. He told me the internal DHHS memos are all recommending mammograms be pushed later 5-10 years as a cost savings for the AHCA (Obolocare). Once that is public, Cruz' wife can beat the drum and do so as an Obolocare recipient.

I really hope he goes through with this. It opens a few possibilities.

It may be as you say. It is always good to have hope. But, I have no hope in what mankind does today. I have seen too many crooked politicians whose star is hitched to the goal of destroying the Grand Republic. I believe the honest and America-loving candidate has no chance against the machine.

c) been against the law

SCOTUS has ruled that the fee for refusing Obamacare is a TAX, not a fine. It's not illegal to pay taxes.

A multimillionaire like Rafael can afford to pay medical bills out of pocket. Why should he buy insurance he doesn't need? He's eligible for Canadian socialist healthcare, anyway.

He told me the internal DHHS memos are all recommending mammograms be pushed later 5-10 years as a cost savings for the AHCA (Obolocare). Once that is public, Cruz' wife can beat the drum and do so as an Obolocare recipient.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is recommending sweeping changes in its breast cancer screening guidelines.

The USPSTF, which is a group of independent health experts convened by the Department of Health and Human Services, reviewed and commissioned research to develop computer-simulated models comparing the expected outcomes under different screening scenarios.

Here are the USPSTF's recommendations, based on all that work:

•Routine screening of average-risk women should begin at age 50, instead of age 40.

•Routine screening should end at age 74.

•Women should get screening mammograms every two years instead of every year.

•Breast self-exams have little value, based on findings from several large studies.

But the new recommendations may leave some women confused, since the American Cancer Society continues to recommend annual mammography screening for all healthy women beginning at age 40. What's the bottom line on mammogram screening? WebMD asked breast cancer experts about the new USPSTF screening guidelines.

This came out a few years ago and has been roundly criticized, and as you know most people/voters have short memories.

His wife Heidi can help "shine the light on the cockroaches" by "reminding" women that this crap is out there and part of OboloCare..

Exactly ,and I think he is more or less saying exactly that . One of the few things right in Obamacare is that the lawmakers have to be insured under the same rules as everyone else.

Thanks for the research.

The doc who did my retirement physical told me they changed colon cancer screening to 50 as well.

He told me the screening I received after age 40 with the stool cards ended about the time I was diagnosed with my colon cancer.

If he followed the new guidelines I could have been in a world of hurt.

Ya, but he's still a natural born Canauck. Can't un-ring that bell.

If having a US citizen mother makes him a US citizen, doesn't having a Cuban citizen father make him a Cuban citizen as well?

Note, he hasn't renounced his loyalty to Fidel Castro, has he?
