Creationism/Evolution Title: Move over Galileo! Saudi cleric says Earth doesn’t revolve around sun A Saudi cleric has appeared in a video rejecting that Earth revolves around the sun, claiming instead that it is “stationary.” His statements have incited a fiery response on social media. When questioned by a student about whether the Earth was stationary or moving, Sheikh Bandar al-Khaibari responded with “stationary and does not move,” Saudi-owned broadcaster Al-Arabia reported. Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread Top • Page Up • Full Thread • Page Down • Bottom/Latest The earth does not revolve around the sun. Rather, the earth, sun, planets and other objects in the solar system spiral forward around the center of mass of the solar system, which is about a half-million miles above the surface of the Sun. The Sun itself revolves around that, as do the other planets. Everything spirals around that center of mass, which itself spirals around the center of mass of the galaxy. As far as the earth being stationary, it depends on one's frame of reference. If one chooses to set the earth as the stationary center of everything, one can. Then every revolves around it, but the paths of the orbits are not circles or ellipses, but curlycues and other patterns, without any apparent cause. When we place the sun at the center of the system, we have a more regular pattern and can mathematically pattern it, although it does not work out perfectly mathematically. When we put the center of mass as the center, then the math works out far better. Of course, the Sun itself ALSO revolves around the center of mass, so that means that the earth does not revolve around the Sun, but both revolve around the center of mass. We can choose any reference point, and if we set that as our stable reference point, then everything revolves around it, but there is no causational link. As long as we continue to believe in gravity as 'force at a distance", then the mathematical center of mass of the solar system provides not just a model for the (accurate) prediction of the movements of the Sun and the planets relative to each other, but also provides an apparent causation of the orbit. Likewise, the moon does not orbit the earth. Both moon and earth orbit the mathematical center of mass of the earth moon system.
#2. To: Vicomte13 (#1) (Edited) Likewise, the moon does not orbit the earth. Well, I'll believe my lying eyes. The moon orbits in the eigenstate determined by the earth's gravitational field. Likewise the earth orbits as influenced by the mass of the sun.
When we put the center of mass as the center Congratulations on observing that Newton and Kepler were correct. homepages.wmich.edu/~korista/Newton-Kepler.html

It seems they're having difficulty grasping that whole "truth is great and will prevail" concept...
#5. To: VxH (#2) Well, I'll believe my lying eyes. My eyes don't see anything orbiting anything. I see a Sun that comes up on one side of the sky, travels over it, and then sets on the other side. I see a Moon that does the same thing. As far as I can see, I live on a piece of land with a sky overhead, and changeful things passing through that sky on a regular basis. I don't see the other side of the earth, or what's over the horizon, or what's past the tree- line. I'm told it's there and I believe it.
