Bang / Guns Title: Ad of the Day: Here's What Happens When You Open a Gun Store in the Middle of NYC
Ad of the Day: Here's What Happens When You Open a Gun Store in the Middle of NYC
First-time gun buyers on the Lower East Side States United to Prevent Gun Violence and its agency, Grey New York, have teamed up for some truly hard-hitting PSAs, including 2013's famous "Ed" spot, which won a Silver Lion in Film at Cannes. Now, they've moved on to a new tactic—a social experiment set in the real world. They did what they're calling "the unthinkable"—opened a real-looking gun store on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and invited first-time gun buyers to check it out, with hidden cameras rolling. To create drama, they put disturbing tags on each weapon, indicating which models were used in particular mass shootings, unintentional shootings, homicides and suicides. Needless to say, the fresh-faced buyers end up looking rather pallid by the end, and aren't quite as excited to head home with a firearm.
The point of the PSA is to debunk the perception, held by six in 10 Americans, that owning a firearm makes a home safer. In fact, according to studies, those who own a gun—and those around them—have an increased risk of injury and death. There's a sense here of preaching to the choir. These folks are awfully quick to backtrack from their desire to own a weapon, and the NYC setting might not do much to convince people in less liberal places to consider changing their views. But it does, at least, suggest—indeed, demonstrate—that minds can be changed on the matter. And it's chilling in the video to see the actual guns that were used in notorious crimes, and must have been that much more so in person. "Our goal is to educate those looking to purchase a firearm and ensure they are aware of the potential risks [and to promote responsible gun ownership]," says Julia Wyman, executive director of States United To Prevent Gun Violence. "Often gun purchasers wrongly believe guns will keep them safe when in fact a gun in the home greatly increases the risk of homicide and suicide. This sets the record straight so consumers can make an informed choice to buy a firearm or not." This is all too much.
#2. To: buckeroo (#1) Bucky, where did you find that one? LOL
#3. To: tpaine (#0) (Edited) Ad of the Day: Here's What Happens When You Open a Gun Store in the Middle of NYC You get stupid hysterical New Yorkers who don't even know which end of the barrel the bullet exits and then leave to vote for a Cuomo or Hillary. At the end of recording them, you can make a dandy propaganda piece asserting what type of looney people are interested in guns.
#4. To: rlk (#3) I'm going to do the same thing in my town. But my store will have 10,000 times as many guns, each with a story of how they saved their owners' life in self defense. What a crock.
#5. To: tpaine (#0) The lady won't feel safe with a gun. Sorry honey, but unless you're willing to give up the booty to protect me and the kids, you're just gonna have to get used to having a gun in the house.

I'm betting the mere suggestion would result in outraged cries of "Anti-Semitism!" Why is democracy held in such high esteem when it’s the enemy of the minority and makes all rights relative to the dictates of the majority? (Ron Paul,2012) #7. To: buckeroo (#1) I just had another thought. WHY are these rocket scientists pulling this propaganda ploy in NYC,of all places? Everybody there is already programmed by decades of anti-gun propaganda anyhow. It's akin to shooting over a baited field. Why not go to some medium to large city in the south or southwest and put up their gun store with the illegal weapons from police storerooms, and without obtaining a Federal Firearms License and see how well they do? I think it would be hilarious to watch their reaction when people tried to buy they guns they pretended to be selling. Maybe with any luck at all, somebody would sue them for false advertising. And then beat the snot out of them,of course. After all, they are a bunch of NYC wusses that don't know how to fight and who don't own weapons. Everybody they meet should smack them around a little. To: sneakypete (#7) I just had another thought. WHY are these rocket scientists pulling this propaganda ploy in NYC,of all places? Lazy libtards. They probably pulled their stunt there because these "lifelong New Yorkers" don't have drivers' licenses.
#10. To: TooConservative (#9) They probably pulled their stunt there because these "lifelong New Yorkers" don't have drivers' licenses. And because they knew the black mayor could give them cover from the black president and attorney general for false advertising charges,as well as the city, state, and federal felonies of selling guns without a license, operating without a business license, etc, etc, etc. Chances are they got the guns from the NYPD impound room. Why is democracy held in such high esteem when it’s the enemy of the minority and makes all rights relative to the dictates of the majority? (Ron Paul,2012) #11. To: sneakypete (#10) (Edited) Chances are they got the guns from the NYPD impound room. In the vid, they mentioned "hundreds of guns, all of them with a history". The tags on each gun with its "history", said: "Every gun has a history. So they used the individual gun models and blamed the worst incident in that model's entire history on those guns collectively, including some models used by police. It is fundamentally a collectivist appeal. I think it is preaching to the faithful. You have to be a gungrabber type to find it appealing. I don't see any crossover appeal outside of people who are just frightened by guns in general. Wanna bet that this is a stunt funded by some Bloomberg-funded tax writeoff foundation or similar?
#12. To: TooConservative (#11) In the vid, they mentioned "hundreds of guns, all of them with a history".
Didn't the guy behind the counter tell the young guy that the 22 single action revolver he handed him was "the very gun used to murder the infant by the child" when the guy asking if "Is THIS the gun used?"? Wanna bet that this is a stunt funded by some Bloomberg-funded tax writeoff foundation or similar? That's not a bet I am taking. It is obviously a scheme by somebody with mega-bucks and mega political pull,or the arrest warrants for selling guns without state, city, and federal permits, and for selling guns they didn't own. If you or I were to start selling guns without city or state permits, and without a Federal Firearms Permit, you can bet your ass we would be in jail without bail awaiting trial. Why is democracy held in such high esteem when it’s the enemy of the minority and makes all rights relative to the dictates of the majority? (Ron Paul,2012) #13. To: sneakypete (#12) If you or I were to start selling guns without city or state permits, and without a Federal Firearms Permit, you can bet your ass we would be in jail without bail awaiting trial. But they didn't appear to actually sell any guns. Maybe you could sue for false advertising but unlikely any NYC judge would let you get far with that.
#14. To: TooConservative (#13) But they didn't appear to actually sell any guns. That doesn't matter. They set themselves up to be a business IN the business of selling guns and ammunition. If this were in Raleigh,NC or Birmingham,Ala for example, they would be sitting in a federal prison cell right now even if they had never sold a single gun, waiting for the charges to be finalized against them by the BATF at the very least, and possibly by the city and state governments.
