On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu won re-election according to the latest vote counts, defeating not just his domestic leftist opposition, but the President of the United States in a public stand-off that had the President sending emissaries to Israel to try and oust Netanyahu. The victory represented a stunning turnaround for Netanyahu, whose Likud Party trailed significantly in the polls in the days leading up to the election.

How Netanyahu shifted the narrative in Israel makes for a compelling political case study in principle over prevarication. Netanyahu overcame a highly- publicized domestic scandal involving allegedly ordering some $2,700 worth of ice cream to the official residence, and exceeding his household budget by approximately a million shekel. He overcame inflation against the dollar that jacked up prices of goods in the weeks leading up to the election, and inflated real estate prices over the course of the last six years. He overcame foreign money injected into the campaign.

How? He employed five key tactics — tactics from which American conservatives could learn:

Build Around a Personality.

Netanyahu’s speech before Congress was the latest indicator that he was a world leader ready to face down the most powerful people in the world, including Iran and its new friends in the Obama administration. While many Israelis said they didn’t want Netanyahu as prime minister, they preferred him over his rivals in every poll for months before the election by a wide margin. In the late days of the campaign, Netanyahu campaigned openly on the idea that conservatives ought to vote for his party in order to elevate him personally. By positioning himself as a major international presence, Netanyahu placed himself in admirable political position. There is danger to this strategy: it allows the opposition to focus on you personally. But voters vote for people, not for ideas.

Don’t Back Down From A Fight.

Netanyahu’s U.S. ambassador, Ron Dermer, knew that Netanyahu was dramatically at odds with President Obama over Obama’s pending nuclear arms deal with Iran. When Dermer negotiated an appearance by Netanyahu before a joint session of Congress with Speaker of the House John Boehner, and Obama retaliated by refusing to see Netanyahu, Netanyahu did not apologize or back down. Instead, he silently embraced the face-off with President Obama, who foolishly elevated Netanyahu by using the media to slam Netanyahu repeatedly. Netanyahu, meanwhile, steadfastly stated that he would use any opportunity, particularly one before the most powerful legislature in the world, to lay out the case against a “bad deal” with Iran. The American media went berserk; the Israeli left media went insane, suggesting that Netanyahu had permanently damaged Israeli-American relations. The polls stated that the speech could actually hurt Netanyahu domestically. Netanyahu went anyway. The result: a boost in the polls and a decline for Zionist Union leader Isaac Herzog.

Energize The Grassroots.

The day before the election, Netanyahu stated that he would never support the establishment of a Palestinian state. This has long been Likud’s platform, but Netanyahu, after taking the prime ministership, had made noises about embracing the possibility of a Palestinian state. Many suspected that he embraced the possibility knowing that it was practically impossible, given the character of Israel’s enemies. But now, Netanyahu left nothing to chance: he wanted his supporters to know precisely where he stood. “I think that anyone who is going to establish a Palestinian state today and evacuate lands is giving attack grounds to radical Islam against the state of Israel,” he stated. “There is a real threat here that a left-wing government will join the international community and follow its orders.”

Call Out The Opposition.

On election day, Netanyahu let loose with a video explaining that “The right- wing government is in danger. Arab voters are going en masse to the polls. Left-wing NGOs are bringing them on buses.” The Joint Arab List made a similar announcement earlier in the day, stating that by 11 a.m., a full 10 percent of eligible Arabs had voted, as opposed to 3 percent in the last election cycle. The left media went totally crazy over this statement, with the Huffington Post labeling Netanyahu a racist. Of course, the left media also totally neglected to mention that the parties that comprise the Joint Arab List, which carries nearly all of the Arab votes in the elections, openly condemn the existence of the Jewish State, side with Hamas, and support the abolition of Israel entirely. Just days ago, the head of the campaign team said that Hamas was not a terrorist group and suggested that ISIS had taken a page from “the Zionist movement.” Imagine if America had a party dedicated to its destruction and openly allied with Osama Bin Laden in that goal. That is the Joint Arab List, and the Labor party and its allies relied heavily on it to get out the vote for the left. All three major Arab parties comprising the Joint Arab List have been banned from elections in the past. Netanyahu drove out his base to stop the rise of the Joint Arab List, and he was justified in doing so.

Stick To Your Issue.

Netanyahu doggedly stuck to national security in this election cycle. While his opposition complained about rent and living expenses, Netanyahu pointed out again and again that his opponents were simply incapable of leading the nation through a time of security crisis. In one of his campaign commercials, Netanyahu posed as a babysitter — the only babysitter you’d trust with your children. Shocked parents asked him why he was there. “It’s either me,” Netanyahu said, “or Tzipi and Buji.” One of the parents responded, “Buji? Our children will have to take care of him! By the time we get home, we won’t have a house left!” As for Livni, Netanyahu stated, “By the time you get back, she’ll have moved on to the neighbors.” Netanyahu concluded, “This election, you will choose who will care for our children. This election, Likud is the only choice!”

Now, there are lessons in Netanyahu’s actions in the months leading up to the elections that lean the opposite direction. Netanyahu blew his personal popularity in large part battling internal enemies. As Michael Medved writes, “the right has indulged in a near Hobbesian internal war of personalities and policies that currently shows as many as seven different parties crossing the electoral threshold to win seats in Knesset. Some of these right-leaning parties are led by close associates and former Cabinet ministers previously linked to Netanyahu.” But overall, Netayahu’s stunning victory demonstrates that the strategy of alienating no one, talking about everything the left wants you to talk about, and running to the center may not spell victory. It may simply spell lack of principle.

The "shadowy Dem billionaire" we see references to but who is not named by the media. Soros or someone else? I'd like to know.

While many Israelis said they didn’t want Netanyahu as prime minister, they preferred him over his rivals in every poll for months before the election by a wide margin.

They were tired of Bibi (as voters do get restless periodically) but Bibi could count on being less unpopular than the other guys. And that was enough.

How can Bibi be a racist for this? The Jews and Arabs are all undeniably Semitic peoples. The Jews really are not some bunch of Europeans, contrary to what many in the West think.

How? He employed five key tactics — tactics from which American conservatives could learn:

Nothing works in every election. This is just hindsight, not general principles for conservatives in America to win every election.

Build Around a Personality.

Well that's a show-stopper right there...
It's strictly amateur hour at the GOP...
They don't have anybody with charisma or sex-appeal..
Just a stumbling bunch of bit-players and wet blanket wannabes.

Racist now means bigot in popular lexicons. Just like in right wing circles calling people commie or socialist is just meant for derision because clearly they don't know what a socialist or a commie is.

Of course most are - they come from Europe from ancestors that have lived in Europe for over 2,000 years (give or take a 1,000 years).

Israel is as it is because the British wanted to divide and rule the area like they wanted to do in India and Pakistan by deliberately creating a condition that would require outside intervention for decades to come - same as in Cyprus - same as in other parts of the ex British empire.

The 2012 election was a shootout between tycoons from both parties. Obozo had a bit over a billion plus AF1 and the other advantages of ceremonial trappings and the ability to use his office to enhance his image with the public. Romney had just under a billion. Obola still overpowered him as using the full extent of the White House royal machinery should probably be valued in relative terms as a $300-$400 million donation to the campaign of an incumbent president. Just the brand-name recognition of an incumbent prez is probably worth $50-$100 million alone.

People forget just how much it costs to make a candidate a household name. The voters are pretty stupid and lazy, kinda resist learning anything about these pols, admittedly characters who are loathsome or lame or both for the most part.

There is some truth to this.

However, the old hard Left is still around and does play a key role in turnout and tough tactics as in the Occupy movement or as key partners in the efforts to oust Walker from office in WI or in the anti-Bush astroturf Lefty demonstrators around groups like Code Pink and Cindy Sheehan. These radicals are more the Alinksky types, not your more subversive Gramscian types. These groups are often funded by tycoon slush funds, as in the various orgs funded by Soros or by Theresa Heinz-Kerry via her Tides Foundation.

While we hear the accusation hurled a little recklessly at times, it remains true that there really are still some old Reds under those beds.

DNA research on modern Jews confirms a remarkable degree of ancestry in the ancient Semitic homelands.

I think the high rate of intermarriage between Jews and others will radically reduce the present rates. The generations of Jews that mostly married other Jews are passing away. Marriage within Jewish circles was quite predominant even in the Eighties and Jews were one of the last religious/ethnic groups in America to engage in out-marriage. But the numbers of Jews marrying Jews has declined at a rate alarming to all the various presidents of Jewish organizations, including the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.

Jewish people seem to have a relentless habit of creating new organizations for every occasion. It's a Thing.     : )

There is no such thing as "European" DNA. The modern Europeans are actually Asians if you want to go back far enough. I meant "European" as in the fact most Jews lived in Europe for at least 2,000 years and are every bit as European as Gypsies or Germans in that their ancestors lived in Europe for a significant amount of time to pass by. Even Israeli culture is European.

Not so.

Wiki: Genetic studies of Jewish origins: Background
Recent studies have been conducted on a large number of genes homologous chromosomes or autosomes (all chromosomes except chromosomes X and Y). A 2009 study was able to genetically identify individuals with full or partial Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry.[3] In August 2012, Dr. Harry Ostrer in his book Legacy: A Genetic History of the Jewish People, summarized his and other work in genetics of the last 20 years, and concluded that all major Jewish groups share a common Middle Eastern origin. Ostrer also claimed to have refuted any large-scale genetic contribution from the Turkic Khazars. Citing Autosomal DNA studies, Nicholas Wade estimates that "Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jews have roughly 30 percent European ancestry, with most of the rest from the Middle East." He further noticed that "The two communities seem very similar to each other genetically, which is unexpected because they have been separated for so long." Concerning this relationship he points to Atzmon conclusions that "the shared genetic elements suggest that members of any Jewish community are related to one another as closely as are fourth or fifth cousins in a large population, which is about 10 times higher than the relationship between two people chosen at random off the streets of New York City" Concerning North African Jews, Autosomal genetic analysis in 2012 revealed that North African Jews are genetically close to European Jews. This findings "shows that North African Jews date to biblical-era Israel, and are not largely the descendants of natives who converted to Judaism," Y DNA studies examine various paternal lineages of modern Jewish populations. Such studies tend to imply a small number of founders in an old population whose members parted and followed different migration paths. In most Jewish populations, these male line ancestors appear to have been mainly Middle Eastern. For example, Ashkenazi Jews share more common paternal lineages with other Jewish and Middle Eastern groups than with non-Jewish populations in areas where Jews lived in Eastern Europe, Germany and the French Rhine Valley. This is consistent with Jewish traditions in placing most Jewish paternal origins in the region of the Middle East.
But mitochondrial studies on the female line have more mixed results.

It's...complex.

Again, all I am saying is that the vast majority of Israeli Jews are Europeans because their ancestors have lived in Europe for over 2,000 years.

whose Likud Party trailed significantly in the polls in the days leading up to the election.

The same ploy they use here to discourage some people with a specific political ideology from turning out to vote.

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rapidly promoted by mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

If I was Israeli I would probably be a Likud voter but I find Bibi manipulative so I may have been a swing voter. I am very secular outwardly but religous inwardly so i would probably not identify with the religous settlers much.
