Something astonishing is happening in the South China Sea, and there are satellite photos to prove it. The Chinese government has been sending construction equipment to a string of small islands in disputed waters and quietly making them bigger.

The effect is pretty dramatic  drag the slider below to see how things have changed at Fiery Cross Reef in the Spratly Islands, which are claimed by China and several other Asian countries. The first photo shows the reef last August. It’s totally underwater; the only habitable area is a small concrete platform built by the Chinese navy. Now look at the second photo, showing the same reef in January. It’s now an artificial island more than 3,000 yards long. Defense analysts from IHS Jane’s, which released the photos taken by a commercial satellite wing of Airbus, say it looks capable of housing an airstrip.

Making things all the more volatile, the US has repeatedly reiterated its intention to adhere to treaty obligations to come to the defense of the Philippines, an ally, in the case of a conflict.

I'm amazed that we still have any treaty obligation to them after they expelled us from Clark AFB and Subic Bay.

America desperately holds onto any "obligation" it can find - we're not doing the Philippines a favor, we're making OURSELVES feel important, justifying massive naval expenditures, to "honor" treaty "obligations". WE'RE the ones who desperately want this, because it makes US feel important.

After the Marcos dictatorship and Immelda's stash of 5,000 pairs of shoes was found, there was a lot of unhappiness with America's role there.

But it was that big volcanic eruption that chased us out of Subic Bay. At the time, there was doubt that we could operate aircraft in the area for some years to come. We never did give up our basing rights there AFAIK. So this was only a return to our base there.

Interesting to see Obola make any base expansion in a sensitive area when so many other places we have pulled back sharply or left (Iraq, Af-Pak).

"of the approximately 45 islands, reefs, cays and other features that are occupied, all contain structures which are occupied by military forces (from the People's Republic of China, the Republic of China (Taiwan), Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia). Additionally, Brunei has claimed (but does not occupy)"

Actually it was Clark AFB that was hit hardest by Pinatubo, and the effect of the eruption was that the Philippines were more amenable to extending the lease since they figured we'd then need to make good the damage from the volcano. So Pinatubo nearly extended our stay, fortunately the Philippine government was too greedy so we never came to an agreement. I'm still amazed that we did not end the treaty when we were shown the exit.

China was not the threat to the South China Sea region then that it is now.

We want back in and they want us in so they can pull a NATO and hide behind Uncle Sam's skirts.
