Science-Technology Title: I Need To Buy A New Computer... (Suggestions?) The Intel Atom 2 (a Foxconn 525) sizzled completely. I've bought only one AMD (an old Athlon) in my life. So I'm contemplating a 3Ghz-and-up AMD - for low bucks. Eh? Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread Top • Page Up • Full Thread • Page Down • Bottom/Latest I've been buying from Dell online for the longest time and haven't had any issues with computers. Did have a few issues with monitors but they were the old "tube type" monitors which Dell replaced with no hassle. Am posting this from an XP machine. I usually don't buy a monitor with the computer cause I can always find a better deal somewhere else. In fact just ordered a Dell 22" Full HD Widescreen LED Monitor #E2215HV yesterday for $119 to replace my old 17" flatscreen that I dropped and it's acting kinda wonky. http://www.ebay.com/itm/391029778006?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D391029778006%26_rdc%3D1 If you have a particular keyboard or mouse that you like then EBay can be a good place to find one for a good price. “Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rapidly promoted by mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.†#2. To: Chuck_Wagon (#0) This website sometimes has some outstanding deals. Before Christmas they had a pretty good Asus Laptop for $300. They have desktops on specials too. This sounds pretty good: *NEW* Acer Aspire AT3-600-UR33 Celeron G1620 LGA1155, 4GB, 500GB Windows 8 Desktop PC for $179.99

#4. To: Operation 40 (#2) Acer Aspire AT3-600-UR33 Celeron G1620 LGA1155, 4GB, 500GB Sounds pretty good - but now that I think of it, AMD APU FM2 5300 3.4GHz DUAL CORE BAREBONES DESKTOP - $217.00. 3.4GHz is FAST - ain't it? I'm coming to conclusion that if I want a fast fast, it's gonna be

#9. To: Chuck_Wagon (#0) What on Earth do you need a computer for?
#10. To: Chuck_Wagon (#4) but I have a few random memory sticks floating around. DDR4 is already out.
#11. To: SOSO (#5) " Ask a 13 year old kid. " LOL! Ain't that the truth. Si vis pacem, para bellum #12. To: Operation 40 (#10) DDR3? Yup. Some 4 GBs.
#13. To: Pridie.Nones (#9) What on Earth do you need a computer for? Danged if I know. LOL!
#14. To: Chuck_Wagon (#4) I hate the computers with those LED lights that can't turn off.
#15. To: Chuck_Wagon (#13) Buy a Raspberry for about 35 bucks. Build your own system since all you need is text type data system; use your old keyboards + old monitors + old mouse. If you have a current disk based system use it as a server to store your limited text based requirements.
#16. To: Chuck_Wagon (#0) Find a Dell XPS 8700 desktop CPU with 16 gig RAM. COSTCO had some a while back. Me too---I like Dell and the kids like Apple.
#17. To: Chuck_Wagon (#3) I become attached to the Dell L100 keyboards, big keys/letters for "Blind Melon Chitlins" and for fat fingers like me. :) “Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rapidly promoted by mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.†#18. To: Chuck_Wagon (#4) '4 terrabyte' external USB drive (which actually turned out to be 3.4 TB). You got a lot of pictures and music? “Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rapidly promoted by mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.†#19. To: CZ82 (#18) You got a lot of pictures and music? Of course. Videos too. Full length movies - and all that. Gotta save all of these things - so that when the Unless I buy more, more and ever more hard drive space. Sure, I can, and do, burn DVDs - but only so much that
#20. To: Chuck_Wagon (#19) Unless I buy more, more and ever more hard drive space. And hope and pray that it doesn't blow up also. External hard drives aren't that expensive and unless you use one quite a bit it should last until it's about obsolete and ready to be replaced. I use one just for backing up everything when I have to reformat and for all my music. Comes in real handy for parties and you have enough music to last for a week or two continuously played... :) Got my new monitor yesterday and man is it nice, talk about night and day compared to the 17". It's also a lot nicer than the 2-20s I bought just a year or 2 ago for the other computers. “Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rapidly promoted by mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.†#21. To: CZ82 (#20) "...Got my new monitor yesterday..." Yup. I got this 22" LG flat screen about two years ago.
#22. To: Operation 40 (#10) DDR4 is already out. What is the benefit of DDR4 other than speed? I don't need the latest/fastest/bestest/mammy-jammy thing -
#23. To: All (#22) CUSTOM AMD APU FM2 5300 3.4GHz DUAL CORE BAREBONES GAMING DESKTOP PC SYSTEM $217.00 Or the Dell 2.93 GHZ (Itel) - It comes down to AMD or Intel - bottom line.
#24. To: Chuck_Wagon (#23) If your looking for a portable computer. Here is a 25 pound one.
#25. To: A K A Stone (#24) ...a portable computer ... a 25 pound one... Cool! Is there a model that comes with a 32 inch flat No? I guess we are then back to the Intel versus AMD But I'll give that 25lb deal some seeerious conseederation - you-betcha!
#26. To: A K A Stone (#24) That looks familiar isn't that the one you had at Homers place? “Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rapidly promoted by mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.†#27. To: CZ82 (#26) ...looks familiar isn't that the one you had at Homers place? Where is/was 'Homer's' place?
There used to be 'Rick's' place - the bachelor pad - But when I was off on a (pleasure) trip, Rick wrecked That was decades ago. Yamaha 650 Heritage Special - A fun bike - and low cost.
#28. To: Chuck_Wagon (#6) LOL I'll ask my 15 year old son tonight:) "Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out." (1 Timothy 6:6-7) #29. To: Chuck_Wagon (#23) It comes down to AMD or Intel - bottom line. Zotac Mini PC Barebones System ZBOX-BI320-U
"Some people march to a different drummer — and some people polka." #30. To: Willie Green (#29) Okay.
#31. To: Chuck_Wagon (#30) Okay. You are now the front-runner in the contest. I shall keep you advised. Eh? Thanks! I'm glad to help, especially since I just went through this analysis when my Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF gave up the ghost and I had to dig my ancient Compaq Evo D510 e-pc out of the closet. LOL! I haven't bought a NEW computer in almost 20 years (peed too much money down the drain trying to keep up with changing technology before that.) But the technology has finally become inexpensive enough that I'm willing to buy a NEW machine (barebones) rather than look for bargains on the used market. But your needs may be different than mine, so please let me show you a couple alternatives that I was considering. As I mentioned previously, it was important to me that the new machine could both use my existing 2.5 hard drive and monitor (I already have an external USB CD/DVD drive, so I didn't need an internal one also). So the Intel Thin Canyon NUC Kit was an early contender based on brand name recognition and VGA output. But the Zotac Z-Box eventually won out based on cheaper price, slightly more powerful processor & USB 3.0 ports instead of 2.0. If my monitor had an HDMI input and I wasn't overly concerned with using my 2.5" hard drive, I'd certainly be tempted by HP Chromebox CB1-020 Desktop (Google Chrome OS) or HP Stream 200-010 Mini Desktop(Windows 8). Both are nice, compact units that take up little space and perfect for light, everyday use (email, web browsing, videos, etc.) Plenty of USB 3.0 ports to connect external drives, built-in WiFi & Bluetooth, built-in media card reader.... Heck, if your eyesight is getting as bad as mine, you'd be tempted to connect one of these puppies directly to a flatscreen TV instead of a monitor (use it with a wireless keyboard/mouse/trackball from the comfort of your La-Z-Boy Recliner!) Only thing I might want to do is boost their RAM up to at least 4Gb instead of only 2. LOL! If I'm not careful, I just might convince myself that I made the wrong decision and should've bought one of these other units instead... But like I said, I don't do any heavy duty gaming or "real" computing like CAD or sophisticated spreadsheets or data processing or whatever that would require a more powerful desktop machine. Just routine home use "Some people march to a different drummer — and some people polka." Top • Page Up • Full Thread • Page Down • Bottom/Latest |
