The next king will be Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz, state television reports

(CNN) —Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al Saud has died, according to an announcement on Saudi state TV. He was 90.

The next king will be Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz, state television reported early Friday.

The announcement of his death comes several weeks after the state-run Saudi Press Agency said Abdullah was suffering from pneumonia and had been admitted to the hospital.

State television showed throngs of mourners gathered in Mecca.

King Abdullah became king of the oil-rich nation, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East, in August 2005. But he'd been running Saudi Arabia since 1996, following his half-brother King Fahd's stroke.

In the context of the kingdom's conservative circles, Abdullah was seen as reformer and often came up against the more hard-line clerics.

Since ascending to the throne, Abdullah took steps toward broader freedoms and invested some of the country's vast oil wealth in large-scale education and infrastructure projects.

However, resistance from conservative factions hindered some of his efforts, leaving many women in particular disappointed by a lack of progress toward greater independence.

Under Abdullah's leadership, the country slowly squashed al Qaeda, capturing or killing its leaders in the kingdom, forcing the remnants underground and sidelining radical preachers.

It also took a more prominent role in international affairs.

Last year, it became the lead Arab nation in a U.S.-led coalition to eradicate the ultra-radical ISIS group in Iraq and Syria.

This is confusing...

Saudis on Twitter deny rumours King Abdullah dead

A Saudi journalist and a member of the royal family denied rumors on Thursday that King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, in hospital since December suffering from pneumonia, had died, according to messages on social media.

"All that is being reported about King Abdullah's death is far from the truth," Ibrahem al-Rawsa, identified as a journalist at state-run Saudi Press Agency, wrote on his Twitter account.

A member of the royal family wrote: "I give you good news. The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques is fine and there is no truth to the rumors going around."

He was referring to King Abdullah's official title.

King Abdullah was admitted to the King Abdulaziz Medical City of the National Guard in Riyadh in December to undergo medical tests, according to state media.

The royal court earlier this month said that the king was suffering from pneumonia and had temporarily needed help to breathe through a tube, but that the procedure was successful.

Saudi Arabia's 'reformer' King Abdullah dies

Does I miss the memo on a new definition of reform and/or reformer?

Those fucking Arabs are all devout, sanctimonious and pious bastards when they are in Saudi Arabia, yet as soon as their airplane leaves Saudi airspace they turn into complete degenerate debauched assholes.

King Abdullah's successor, half-brother Deputy Prime Minister Salman bin Abdul Aziz, became king immediately after his death, state television reported.

...
Salman is aged in his 80s and is widely thought to be in bad health. Prince Muqrin bin Abdul Aziz, who is also King Abdullah's half-brother and is a former head of Saudi intelligence, was named crown prince.

Cheap gas is probably over. Will the oil fields burn while a power struggle war rages? Very much a possibility.

Mecca is up for grabs. We'll be running on Canadian tar sands from the Keystone Pipeline and shale oil. If we're lucky.

If crude oil futures are any indication I don't think so. The NYMEX Dec. 2015 close today was $54.29/bbl, Dec. 2016 was $59.07/bbl. The King has been old and ill for quite a while making for an orderly succession a good bet. But anything can happen.

Less than a 2% rise. Hardly anything to worry about or a reason to dclare that "cheap" oil is over. But this is the ME and I wouldn't bet on anything other than continuing uncertainty moving toward chaos.

I don't know if he is dead or alive, but I've been suspicious ever since they continued pumping at $100 a barrel quantity. It reminds me of the tricks the fat cats pull. They'll back legislation that they can afford just to put the little guy out of business. I don't think they like our oil boom. They can afford to wait it out.
