Republicans target Social Security disability

They say new limits will force Congress to fix the ailing program. Liberals see a ploy to weaken all of Social Security.

Like Mrs. O’Leary’s cow, House Republicans kick-started a bigger fire than many imagined with an opening day rules change that revived Social Security as a hot issue for this Congress — and the 2016 presidential elections.

The GOP’s immediate target is Social Security’s sprawling disability insurance program, which has grown at a pace far beyond its revenues and will exhaust its trust fund reserves by December 2016, threatening a 19 percent cut in benefits.

In the past, Congress has simply shifted revenues from Social Security’s larger retirement account to fill holes in the disability fund. But the new House rule throws up a roadblock by creating a point of order against any such bill that does not improve the “actuarial balance” of the combined funds.

“What we want to do is not kick the can down the road anymore,” said Rep. Sam Johnson (R-Texas), who

This situation would not have occurred without the self-destructive "free trade" policies that undermined, downsized and outsourced the wealth creating manufacturing sector that once supported these retirement and disability benefits.

Free Trade is not only an economic war against the American Middle Class, but also against our elderly and disabled.

Republicans love their disproven trickle down economics. Rich people should be pissing gold on the people any day now since they made so much money from outsourcing.

Easy fix: raise the ceiling on Social Security taxes, so that they apply to all income from work, including stock options, etc. Make IT and Medicare the "flat tax".

C'mon, comrade, where is your ballyhooed compassion for the poor, the working class and the middle class?

There is no reason at all to allow any ceiling on SS taxes on earnings.

While we're at it, the tax code should eliminate tax-free charities and religious giving entirely. Also, trust funds.

These things may be available to all but they overwhelmingly benefit the tycoons.

Also, impose much heavier estate taxes on inheritance over $500K.

Well, Citizen, if we're really going to do it right, then we need to cease with these nonsense half-measures which give rise to gaming and warp the economy.

Banish the income tax, and the Social Security tax. Banish the Medicare tax and the inheritance tax and the estate tax. Banish property taxes and sales taxes.

Wipe the slate clean to zero, with no taxes, or imposts, or fees, or tolls, of any sort. Zero.

Then, to fund the government, implement one single, ungraduated, uniform tax on gross wealth of all individuals and all entities that have rights as individuals (corporations, LLCs, trusts, Partnerships, churches), etc., and hit them with one single yearly tax on the gross value of all property, real, personal, cash, financial instruments.

A unitary, non-graduated gross wealth tax, with no deductions, and no exceptions. This hits real estate the same as cash the same as gold the same as wages the same as bank accounts.

For ease of enforceability, the value of personal property and art assets that might otherwise be hidden or that would be ridiculous to document, can be taxed by taxing the nominal value of insurance. People may be hesitant to declare their jewelry to the tax authorities, but they won't leave valuable jewelry uninsured.

The bulk of the national wealth is in securities - all of which are easily tracked, bank assets and real estates. These things are already registered and can't be hidden. Then there are vehicles, which likewise are currently registered.

So, instead of spaghetti-bowl corporate structures to avoid (or evade) taxes, an entity-taxation structure would act to reduce the number of entities people form, returning them to their PURPOSE, which is to pool resources and provide some shelter from liability.

And instead of tax avoidance being done through tricky manipulation of securities, now it would be at the bottom - in the personal property realm where the amounts are trivial anyway - where there would some evasion.

And you set the unitary wealth tax rate at the level to run the government.

Life would be vastly simplified, and the unfairness in the system would be gone.

There, that's the RIGHT answer, Citizen.

I could probably support that as long as you don't means test SS benefits and don't tax SS benefits.

The problem with SS is that so many foreigners and others who have never paid a nickel into it receive SS checks in addition to the SS money spent on Section 8 Housing,Food Stamps, etc, etc, etc.

The Dims used the SS "Trust Fund" to fund LBJ's "War on Poverty". They just took money out of it to fund busing, food stamps,AFDC,etc, etc, etc, and left the Trust Fund holding IOU's for the money. None of them gave a damn because they all knew they would be retired and/or dead before the bills came due,and somebody else would get all the blame.

Why is democracy held in such high esteem when it’s the enemy of the minority and makes all rights relative to the dictates of the majority? (Ron Paul,2012)
