Title: Iowa Man Who Fought to Use Marijuana Oil on Rare Cancer Dies

An eastern Iowa man who was convicted late last year of growing marijuana that he used to treat his rare form of cancer has died.

Benton Mackenzie, 49, died Monday at his home in Long Grove, near Davenport, his mother Dottie Mackenzie confirmed Tuesday.

He had been growing marijuana to create cannabis oil that he consumed and applied to tumors caused by his angiosarcoma, a rare cancer of the blood vessels that he was diagnosed with seven years ago.

Mackenzie said his self-treatment from the oil had prolonged his life and made some of the skin lesions disappear. Little research has been conducted on the effect of cannabis oil on this form of cancer, though doctors don't discredit Mackenzie's claims. But Iowa only allows medical marijuana to be used to treat intractable epilepsy, meaning further research of the drug's benefits is obstructed in the state.

"He didn't ask for this fight," Dottie Mackenzie said. "It came to him."

Benton Mackenzie and his wife, Loretta Mackenzie, were charged with conspiring to grow marijuana after a June 2013 raid of their home in which authorities found 71 marijuana plants, growing equipment and drug paraphernalia. Their son, Cody Mackenzie, was charged and convicted of drug possession when police found a small amount of marijuana in his room.

Benton Mackenzie was sentenced last September to three years of probation, and his wife and son also received probation.

Following his sentence, Benton Mackenzie was warned to spend the remainder of his life marijuana-free, to meet the terms of his probation and avoid being sent to prison.

The Quad-City Times reported that Mackenzie's parents faced misdemeanor charges in the case of hosting a drug house, but the charges were eventually dropped. Dottie Mackenzie told the paper that she's hoping her daughter-in-law and grandson will also be shown leniency as they move forward with appeals.

Dottie MacKenzie said she's found peace with the situation and her son's death. She said she won't actively advocate for looser medical marijuana laws in Iowa moving forward, but she hopes his case will serve as an example.

"He's proof that it works," she said.

It is time to ban the fda and allow doctors to treat cancer with every possible drug, herb, mineral, and other alternative treatments. I am treating mine with B17 and PH therapy. There is nothing in the US Constitution that even hints at giving the government the authority to deny me treatment I am willing to pay for.

Agree Bob. I knew of one man that took the Laetrile treatments in Mexico. He recovered nicely, and lived another 10 or 12 years.

I also knew of a professor of Astro (?) Physics at Univ of Kentucky that did the same. He recovered and went back to work, Then retired, and lived until he was in his late 90's, died of old age.

I wish you well Bob!! God Speed!

I do not know about that, Deckard will have to answer that himself.

However, I have had a number of family members die from cancer. What really killed them was they starved to death. Yes, starved. The drugs they were on kept them sick, they did not want to eat, and if they did, they would throw it up.

I have been told that marijuanna would enable them to have an appetite, and they would be able to keep food down.

I do not know what your experience has been, but that has been mine. It was very ugly!

Apparently it was working in this case, and some studies have shown it as well.

Do you really believe marijuanna cures cancer?

The US National Institutes of Health says so, but mainstream news reporters are apparently unaware or unable to bring it up.

Have any preclinical (laboratory or animal) studies been conducted using Cannabis or cannabinoids?

Preclinical studies of cannabinoids have investigated the following activities:

Antitumor activity

Studies in mice and rats have shown that cannabinoids may inhibit tumor growth by causing cell death, blocking cell growth, and blocking the development of blood vessels needed by tumors to grow. Laboratory and animal studies have shown that cannabinoids may be able to kill cancer cells while protecting normal cells.

A study in mice showed that cannabinoids may protect against inflammation of the colon and may have potential in reducing the risk of colon cancer, and possibly in its treatment.

A laboratory study of delta-9-THC in hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) cells showed that it damaged or killed the cancer cells. The same study of delta-9-THC in mouse models of liver cancer showed that it had antitumor effects. Delta-9-THC has been shown to cause these effects by acting on molecules that may also be found in non-small cell lung cancer cells and breast cancer cells.

A laboratory study of cannabidiol (CBD) in estrogen receptor positive and estrogen receptor negative breast cancer cells showed that it caused cancer cell death while having little effect on normal breast cells. Studies in mouse models of metastatic breast cancer showed that cannabinoids may lessen the growth, number, and spread of tumors.

A laboratory study of cannabidiol (CBD) in human glioma cells showed that when given along with chemotherapy, CBD may make chemotherapy more effective and increase cancer cell death without harming normal cells. Studies in mouse models of cancer showed that CBD together with delta-9-THC may make chemotherapy such as temozolomide more effective.

Dr.Christina Sanchez explains how cannabis kills cancer cells

The Feds even have a patent on the "use of cannabinoids"

#6330507 -Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services (Washington, DC)

Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants,

This patent (part of it) has been granted to a company called kannalife.com

I’m not much of a conspiracy theorist — and I certainly have nothing on Paul Craig Roberts whose most recent article, helpfully disseminated by the Ron Paul Institute, claims the Charlie Hebdo attacks to be a “false flag” operation — but I can’t help but wonder if the “mainstream media” is playing up the potential presidential candidacies of Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, Mike Huckabee, and Rick Santorum simply to depress Republican voters.

Or, going the full tin-foil-hat route ... maybe these guys are themselves double agents --- part of a MoveOn.org (does it still exist?)sleeper cell which was just activated (by someone who doesn’t get that Americans don’t want to talk about the 2016 election in January of 2015).

Their goal: To make the GOP look so ridiculous, so full of unappealing candidates, that independent voters scoff and Republicans begin considering staying home in 2016 the same way they did in 2012, handing an eminently winnable election to a living national nightmare in a pants suit.

What really killed them was they starved to death. Yes, starved.

That is how my mother in law died, it is a terrible death. The last day she struggled for every breath, it took all her strength just to be able support her upper chest with her arm and be able to take one more breath, and she faded away. The breaths became farther and farther apart, until they were no more. It is like a crucifixion in the way death finally comes, the body becoming to weak too expend the energy to take a breath, and then when it becomes terminal as the body is starved of oxygen and enters a vicious circle the feeds on itself.

Cannabinoids. Not cannabis.

Even if a particular cannabinoid in marijuana is found to be beneficial, that does not mean smoking marijuana is just as beneficial -- in many cases, the user would have to smoke 50-100 joints per day to get the recommended dosage of the cannabinoid.
