If anybody has any suggestions for improvements that could be made here at Liberty's Flame then we would like to hear them.

I've noticed one or two on other threads but I ask you to put them here if you don't mind to make them easier to keep track of. Thank you.

" Nekkid dancing girls? "

Yeah, I'd vote for that. Keep em limited to likes of Sophia Loren, Raquel Welch, Ann Margret, women of that class.

I get a little dizzy at just the mention of Sophia, never mind seeing her naked. Not sure my old heart could deal with that. The pressure would probably blow my fingertips out.

There is Sophia, and there are other women.

BTW Pete, good to see you over here.

Thanks,good to see you,too.

Willie, when I see that line here is the song I remember from my career as a juvenile delinquent back in the 50's. I must have sang it along with them a million times.

I see Willie is here but the musical tables have turned.

Here at LF, pete owns the Music pinglist.     : )

I'm sure you guys can share.

LOL! One of the first things I did was join petey's ping list...
But his diligence of posting weekend Music Threads has certainly earned him sole proprietership.
Besides, old age is taking it's toll, and while my health is still pretty good under the circumstances, I simply can't be the prolific participant that I once was, nor can I be as diligent as pete. So I gladly hand over the reins... petey deserves the honors for keeping it going.

I thought we might get a real schoolyard fight going over the vast power of owning the Music pinglist, especially if a high-speed train runs past pete's property so Willie could get there.

Alas, you two seem determined to get along. Where's the fun in that?

I would only do something like that in extreme circumstances, and in all the years I have been pinging people to music threads I created,I don't think I have had to tell people to back off the political infighting crap on the music thread more than once or twice, and each time they did.

And I just don't see that ever happening with Willie. He shows up for the music.

To MY way of thinking,we need at least one thread on every political board where nobody is trying to beat anybody else up,and where people who normally fight can be civil to one another.

I can't think of a better place for this to happen than on music threads.

Apparently the browsers are reinterpreting the HTML. Seems the formating of the comments isn't quite by the book and it was altering things in unintended ways. Yes, adding a < p > tag at the beginning of a comment fixes this. I modified the code to always put one in. Not the ideal fix but it does the trick.

How about some redneck gangstarap/bluegrass just for you,Willie?

Sounds like something that should be illegal in all 50 states, doesn't it?

Here is the theme song from one of my favorite teebee shows. It may be the only fictional teebee show ever made about the south that has the accents, the attitudes, and the people DOWN. Of course, being filmed in the Smokies means they have the scenery and the extras right on hand.

And the scripts and the actors are all first-rate. Nobody working here just because they have a "name" or are related to somebody important.

BTW,the series was based on a short story by Elmore Leonard, and he was one of the major script writers right up to the time of his death last year. If you are a Elmore Leonard fan,you know what the characters are like and will really love this show.

I'm pleased to have a product out that's well regarded and received, and I know there are improvements needed, but working on them just doesn't put food on the table, so it's low priority by necessity.

Huh? The visuals are clips from the show, and other than the vocal,ALL the "noise you will hear is from a banjo,a foot stomping time on a wooden floor, and a acoustic guitar. It's called "Bluegrass",and that is some seriously good banjo being banged out.

Trust me,Willie. This be some good stuff. Give it a listen and see for yourself.

I know. And you are trying to help sysadmin wrap up the LP stuff. He doesn't know the DB issues like you do. Neither do I.

Take this fairly puny category merge operation. I have to check the documentation and am still nervous. But you probably just whipped up something like:

UPDATE Categories SET CategoryNum=47 WHERE CategoryNum=48;

Then you might finish with a OPTIMIZE TABLE Category; for good measure.

I know just enough mysql (and MyISAM) for even that to make me kinda nervous. I think it's right. But you know from experience instantly what is kosher. That's the difference between a dilettante and a pro.

Of course, you might not be using any command line mysql and could be using something like Navicat instead but even with a sweet GUI DB interface, you have to know a lot of underlying technical details and what to avoid. I've never even set up Navicat for a remote secure database connection but I'd bet that that is old hat for you.

Maybe we can have a fundraiser someday and pay you to upgrade certain aspects of the software..

In the Ron Paul campaigns, we often used ChipIn. Very easy, anonymous donations for almost any cause you could dream up. We used it for ad campaigns and even raising money to pay travel for activists to go to NH and other states.

But they went out of business in 2013 and I don't know if anyone has really replaced them. They gave you a little ChipIn banner to post on your forum or website and handled the payments. And deleted all the records of the ChipIn as soon as it was done. Maybe there's a new company filling that slot now. I know we used the crap out of it over at RonPaulForums.com and never had a single problem.

We used ChipIn to run a website to raise money for ads to appeal to Arab readers of AAN, the major Arab-American newspaper in Dearborn, MI. Our leader was a 16yo Muslim kid, I was webmaster. Ads cost about $500 a shot. Abrahem bugged his dad to translate to Arabic, our graphics artist was an expatriate living in Japan, our server was owned by a minister on the eastern seaboard. Very diverse, like all the RP groups were. Archive.org has our front page, our Links page, and even our Ads page (but lacks our banner and the Javascript that made it very slick). With an Arabic banner and running ads in Arabic by the end of our ad campaign, I was just hoping the ads didn't actually say something like "Join al-Qaeda, see the world!". Of course, they didn't. I had actually never worked with a Muslim before that so it was a good experience.

UPDATE Categories SET CategoryNum=47 WHERE CategoryNum=48;

Then you might finish with a OPTIMIZE TABLE Category; for good measure.

The syntax is fine, and you got the right idea, but this isn't the right solution.

The problem was that articles were listed in both cat # 47 and Cat #48. To merge the 2 cats, all articles in cat 48 needed to be changed to cat #47:

UPDATE Articles SET CatNum=47 WHERE CatNum=48;

Then delete the extra cat in Categories:

DELETE from Categories where CatNum=48

Or maybe I renumbered to cat #48. I forget, but either way is the solution.

When I started worknig with MySql 15 years ago, all there was was the mysql client terminal. I got comfortable with that by necessity, and after that never really needed to move on to things like phpmyadmin. I've used that a few times but being used to the text based mysql client, I pretty much stick with that. It doesn't require a web interface to use which for me is/was advantageous.

UPDATE Categories Articles

Doh, yeah. I was just spitballing it from memory. And I knew of the DELETE as well.

Or maybe just write the code to make use of the DefaultCat field that you put in Categories already. Isn't that what it was to be used for, to give articles a broad default category like World News or Sports or whatever so that if you deleted the current category they were in, they would get put back in their "parent" Category? Anyway, the name seemed suggestive and it would solve lots of problems with stray Categories that don't seem so relevant a few years down the road. So a Ron Paul 2012 category could be merged from the admin panel into its parent category, like Politics.

So VPN and mysql then. A lot of times, I peek at stuff here locally with phpmyadmin but I actually type out the commands to mysql for a major change. The slick web interface is nice but I just don't trust it as much. I've used an old copy of Navicat too.

As I type, I don't remember the purpose of a default category. But there is no parent system in play. All cats stand alone, equal to one another. Articles are put in categories according to key words, or failing that, the user must select when posting.

Managing categories once they are created is one weak spot in the admin panel. The problem is, if a cat is deleted, something must be done with all arts posted in it. I guess a drop down menu to force the admin to choose an alternate cat to put those articles into. Little dangerous as without more programming it's an irreversible act. And cat maintenance is generally a setup and forget type thing anyway so I didn't worry about it too much.

It is the one thing it really needs so you can merge categories easily. And the name is so suggestive. I was considering proposing it to you when I noticed that unused Categories.DefaultCat field in the DB.

When someone clicks on “Post Comment” on a new thread, the default name appearing in the “To” block should be “Author” and not the posted “by” person.

An individual may post an article because they agree with it, disagree with it, find it to be newsworthy or just interesting.

The posting itself should be “considered for what it’s worth” and/or “do with it what you will” with no assumptions made.

The assumption is made far too often that someone posts something because they agree with it, and then some members attack the poster of the article and call on him/her to defend it.

Create a “Poster Comment” section in the bottom of the article posting section and let the poster state there whether he/she agrees with the information posted, disagrees with the information, just posting the information for news, or suggests that it may be interesting information.

If I understand you correctly. You want to respond to author instead of posted by.

I don't think the author would reply unless they wrote it themself. So if that is the case it seems kind of silly.

Besides its hardcoded in and it can't be changed as far as I know.

I also don't want to bug neil to much about doing stuff.
