If anybody has any suggestions for improvements that could be made here at Liberty's Flame then we would like to hear them.

I've noticed one or two on other threads but I ask you to put them here if you don't mind to make them easier to keep track of. Thank you.

However, the forum software does allow category filters. So you can unsubscribe to a particular category and never see it in your sidebar and such.

Neil re-enabled category filtering recently at LP but we never got a chance to see if it would help much. It is still disabled here at LF but, if enabled, you get to choose what categories you see from the Content Filters page. (The Categories list appears between the Bozo list and the Ignored Threads list.)

But if you have certain flamebait topics that almost always go bad, maybe they should be segregated. I know a lot of women posters just do not want to read that much swearing and hostile language. They don't complain. They just stop posting and the forum suffers.

LP would have been a lot more peaceful if we had had a category for Policing and another for Conspiracy (including Truthery).

LF should also have a clear policy on retitling articles, especially making flamebait titles. A clarification is one thing "2016 Race Frontrunner [Jeb!]" as the square brackets make clear what part was added. But something like "Police chief arrested for shooting wife" doesn't need to be retitled as "Porker pig honcho blah-blah-blah". It's too flamey. It will be easier for the Devil if he and Stone come to some agreement on retitling policy which is a surprisingly recurrent problem.

The Devil is the most powerful spirit of evil in Christianity. An evil spirit that causes a person to do bad things or make trouble.

Since I don’t think you are evil and don’t intend to do bad things or make trouble, I will henceforth always refer to you as, Sue.

Sue, your narcissistic life becomes an open book when you quote yourself in your first post. It is your nature to try and show how smart you are.

Therefore, why bother with trying to maintain a secret identity when everyone can easily deduct who you really are anyway?

If everyone doesn’t already know who you are, the certainly do now.

Seems to me that the software here makes the first line of every comment look like it's italicized.

As is you're quoting your own comment, or one that was never made by the person you're addressing.

Nope, didn't do it on this post, although the first line above looks a little smaller than the rest.. No? -- Anybody else get this effect?

If you're going to use category filtering it might be a good idea to prune the list down by combining some of them.

IMO, the category list could use some work. Less political shuck 'n jive spin, and more functionality.

There are actually two categories that are both named "The Democrats War On Women". They are categories 47 and 48.

Those two need to be merged. Only Neil can do that quickly and easily.

Possibly the thing that rugged me the most over at LP was the group abuse of the bozo feature.

For years there, I had 2 or 3 posters who had put me on bozo.. --- Then I started irritating misterwhite and palmdale, who put me on bozo and used it to trade 'behind the bozo' remarks. --- Soon, the harrowup/gatlin crowd picked up on the technique, resulting in some of the chaos over at LP.

At one point I wondered, and posted, if a public listing of how many each member had on bozo, --- would help control this abuse of bozo.

Everybody shot me down, and I'd like to see if anybody here has any better ideas, before some group starts the same old crap over here?

No one has me on bozo yet, and I'd like to see it stay that way. -- Feel free to let me know, public or private, if you're about to bozo me.

Hopefully we won't have that problem here and if it starts I will get to the bottom of it.

It sounds like you aren't a fan of the bozo feature but as you probably well know some people just don't play well with others. And bozo just might end up being the lesser of 2 evils.

Anyway welcome aboard I look forward to reading some articles you post.

Article categories are like a chart of accounts in business. Far better to lay them in a comprehensive way in one shot than to piecemeal your design.

Look at major websites or newspapers like USAtoday or others. They have a pretty standard set of categories they apply to everything. Since we are publishing the same stories, it would be best to have some general chart of categories that we can apply to the stories here.

A local/national/world set of categories is quite useful. Where "world" means anything not national. You see this on many big news sites. "Local" and "national" mean your local news or your desired national news. And "World" is everything foreign.

It is not him. Time will show you that if you have doubts.

It is too! I am the mighty and powerful Mod!

Some things never change. Writing style is one of them. Everyone uses certain techniques that makes a writer’s style easy to recognize. Once a writing style is developed, it stays with you like a fingerprint thus making both easily recognizable features. Choice of words, sentence structure, syntax and prolific posting routine are all dead giveaways.

The study of linguistic style, stylometry, has been used to out the authors behind some of history’s most disputed documents. Stylometry examines word choice; the frequency, sequence, and length of words; and other telling tendencies.

There is software that helps identify anonymous writers. It was analysis software that wrecked J.K. Rowling’s anonymity and the literary world found out that Robert Galbraith the author of The Cuckoo’s Calling was J.K. Rowling the author of Harry Potter.

The typical methods of evading detection by using different IP addresses or posting under an anonymous name no longer apply. There is nowhere left to hide on the Internet now. Anonymity is a thing of the past. The release of the open source tool, JStylo, which is used to identify all the secret forum contributors is being deployed to strip away all masks.

Anyone who know you, TooConservative, can easily recognize your writing style. If they couldn’t, then they can recognize the frequency magnitude in the number of posts one sees from you as another dead giveaway.

On different note, your much needed service to LF will be of great benefit. As you have previously acknowledged on LP, the activity on forums is feeling the effects of competing forums, Facebook, blogs and so on….all decreasing forum activity. The distractions of iphone games also contribute to the loss.

Forum members need to be motivated and be shown good reason to post on LF. They need to have a desire strong enough that they will choose LF over every other distraction to consume their finite time, including cross-posting in other forums. People really desire to participate in active conversations. There must be ways found to get those conversations started and keep them going. You have two, three or maybe a couple more people on LF that contribute nothing, all the do is take pot shots at others. Their activity needs to be curtailed. That does not mean banning them, it means redirecting their interests into informative and productive posts.

There can be no doubt from anyone who knows you, TooConservative, that you can greatly improve LF. I suggest Stone needs to stop the amateurish and melodramatic hibachi-style theater antics. Quit trying to disguise someone behind the mysterious character of Devil Anse. It is a self-delusion that creates nothing. So take William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield back to where you dug him up from in the Sarah Ann Hatfield Cemetery in Sarah Ann, West Virginia, and lay him back to rest. Then get on with the primary business at hand….improving LF to attract new members.

You only need to round up the strays, not re-brand the whole herd. Maybe a couple of thousand or so need to be changed.

Is leaving the old ones as is, and just starting a new category list going forward an option? I suppose that would make searching for articles difficult.

I put it yet another way to say what are the reactions of the McCoy relatives when the DEVIL ANSE shows up? "OH S@*T here we go again".
In 2003 more than sixty McCoy and Hatfield descendants issued a proclamation of peace "We ask by God's grace and love that we be forever remembered as those that bound together the hearts of two families to form a family of freedom in America."
Put it even another way, is intentionally using the name of Devil Anse Hatfield to “play the heavy” contributing to forever remember “those that are bound together in the hearts of two families?”

Which is why I thought it was quite clever. Any Hatfield wannabes (forum brawlers) would know it's hit the fan when Devil Anse shows up.

I apologize for falsely accusing you to be the Devil.

Like this is the first time that's happened. LOL.

If the Devil wants to reconsider choosing that handle, now is the time, before a posting history for the account develops.

Devil Anse is a clever choice. But angry posters will make lots of nicknames out of it.

Maybe a funny name like Darth Moderator would be a little less flamey. Tons of good choices really.

Here at LF, pete owns the Music pinglist.     : )

I'm sure you guys can share.

LOL! One of the first things I did was join petey's ping list...
But his diligence of posting weekend Music Threads has certainly earned him sole proprietership.
Besides, old age is taking it's toll, and while my health is still pretty good under the circumstances, I simply can't be the prolific participant that I once was, nor can I be as diligent as pete. So I gladly hand over the reins... petey deserves the honors for keeping it going.

I thought we might get a real schoolyard fight going over the vast power of owning the Music pinglist, especially if a high-speed train runs past pete's property so Willie could get there.

Alas, you two seem determined to get along. Where's the fun in that?

I would only do something like that in extreme circumstances, and in all the years I have been pinging people to music threads I created,I don't think I have had to tell people to back off the political infighting crap on the music thread more than once or twice, and each time they did.

And I just don't see that ever happening with Willie. He shows up for the music.

To MY way of thinking,we need at least one thread on every political board where nobody is trying to beat anybody else up,and where people who normally fight can be civil to one another.

I can't think of a better place for this to happen than on music threads.

Apparently the browsers are reinterpreting the HTML. Seems the formating of the comments isn't quite by the book and it was altering things in unintended ways. Yes, adding a < p > tag at the beginning of a comment fixes this. I modified the code to always put one in. Not the ideal fix but it does the trick.

How about some redneck gangstarap/bluegrass just for you,Willie?

Sounds like something that should be illegal in all 50 states, doesn't it?

Here is the theme song from one of my favorite teebee shows. It may be the only fictional teebee show ever made about the south that has the accents, the attitudes, and the people DOWN. Of course, being filmed in the Smokies means they have the scenery and the extras right on hand.

And the scripts and the actors are all first-rate. Nobody working here just because they have a "name" or are related to somebody important.

BTW,the series was based on a short story by Elmore Leonard, and he was one of the major script writers right up to the time of his death last year. If you are a Elmore Leonard fan,you know what the characters are like and will really love this show.

I'm pleased to have a product out that's well regarded and received, and I know there are improvements needed, but working on them just doesn't put food on the table, so it's low priority by necessity.

Huh? The visuals are clips from the show, and other than the vocal,ALL the "noise you will hear is from a banjo,a foot stomping time on a wooden floor, and a acoustic guitar. It's called "Bluegrass",and that is some seriously good banjo being banged out.

Trust me,Willie. This be some good stuff. Give it a listen and see for yourself.

I know. And you are trying to help sysadmin wrap up the LP stuff. He doesn't know the DB issues like you do. Neither do I.

Take this fairly puny category merge operation. I have to check the documentation and am still nervous. But you probably just whipped up something like:

UPDATE Categories SET CategoryNum=47 WHERE CategoryNum=48;

Then you might finish with a OPTIMIZE TABLE Category; for good measure.

I know just enough mysql (and MyISAM) for even that to make me kinda nervous. I think it's right. But you know from experience instantly what is kosher. That's the difference between a dilettante and a pro.

Of course, you might not be using any command line mysql and could be using something like Navicat instead but even with a sweet GUI DB interface, you have to know a lot of underlying technical details and what to avoid. I've never even set up Navicat for a remote secure database connection but I'd bet that that is old hat for you.

Maybe we can have a fundraiser someday and pay you to upgrade certain aspects of the software..

In the Ron Paul campaigns, we often used ChipIn. Very easy, anonymous donations for almost any cause you could dream up. We used it for ad campaigns and even raising money to pay travel for activists to go to NH and other states.

But they went out of business in 2013 and I don't know if anyone has really replaced them. They gave you a little ChipIn banner to post on your forum or website and handled the payments. And deleted all the records of the ChipIn as soon as it was done. Maybe there's a new company filling that slot now. I know we used the crap out of it over at RonPaulForums.com and never had a single problem.

We used ChipIn to run a website to raise money for ads to appeal to Arab readers of AAN, the major Arab-American newspaper in Dearborn, MI. Our leader was a 16yo Muslim kid, I was webmaster. Ads cost about $500 a shot. Abrahem bugged his dad to translate to Arabic, our graphics artist was an expatriate living in Japan, our server was owned by a minister on the eastern seaboard. Very diverse, like all the RP groups were. Archive.org has our front page, our Links page, and even our Ads page (but lacks our banner and the Javascript that made it very slick). With an Arabic banner and running ads in Arabic by the end of our ad campaign, I was just hoping the ads didn't actually say something like "Join al-Qaeda, see the world!". Of course, they didn't. I had actually never worked with a Muslim before that so it was a good experience.

UPDATE Categories SET CategoryNum=47 WHERE CategoryNum=48;

Then you might finish with a OPTIMIZE TABLE Category; for good measure.

The syntax is fine, and you got the right idea, but this isn't the right solution.

The problem was that articles were listed in both cat # 47 and Cat #48. To merge the 2 cats, all articles in cat 48 needed to be changed to cat #47:

UPDATE Articles SET CatNum=47 WHERE CatNum=48;

Then delete the extra cat in Categories:

DELETE from Categories where CatNum=48

Or maybe I renumbered to cat #48. I forget, but either way is the solution.

When I started worknig with MySql 15 years ago, all there was was the mysql client terminal. I got comfortable with that by necessity, and after that never really needed to move on to things like phpmyadmin. I've used that a few times but being used to the text based mysql client, I pretty much stick with that. It doesn't require a web interface to use which for me is/was advantageous.

UPDATE Categories Articles

Doh, yeah. I was just spitballing it from memory. And I knew of the DELETE as well.

Or maybe just write the code to make use of the DefaultCat field that you put in Categories already. Isn't that what it was to be used for, to give articles a broad default category like World News or Sports or whatever so that if you deleted the current category they were in, they would get put back in their "parent" Category? Anyway, the name seemed suggestive and it would solve lots of problems with stray Categories that don't seem so relevant a few years down the road. So a Ron Paul 2012 category could be merged from the admin panel into its parent category, like Politics.

So VPN and mysql then. A lot of times, I peek at stuff here locally with phpmyadmin but I actually type out the commands to mysql for a major change. The slick web interface is nice but I just don't trust it as much. I've used an old copy of Navicat too.

As I type, I don't remember the purpose of a default category. But there is no parent system in play. All cats stand alone, equal to one another. Articles are put in categories according to key words, or failing that, the user must select when posting.

Managing categories once they are created is one weak spot in the admin panel. The problem is, if a cat is deleted, something must be done with all arts posted in it. I guess a drop down menu to force the admin to choose an alternate cat to put those articles into. Little dangerous as without more programming it's an irreversible act. And cat maintenance is generally a setup and forget type thing anyway so I didn't worry about it too much.

It is the one thing it really needs so you can merge categories easily. And the name is so suggestive. I was considering proposing it to you when I noticed that unused Categories.DefaultCat field in the DB.

When someone clicks on “Post Comment” on a new thread, the default name appearing in the “To” block should be “Author” and not the posted “by” person.

An individual may post an article because they agree with it, disagree with it, find it to be newsworthy or just interesting.

The posting itself should be “considered for what it’s worth” and/or “do with it what you will” with no assumptions made.

The assumption is made far too often that someone posts something because they agree with it, and then some members attack the poster of the article and call on him/her to defend it.

Create a “Poster Comment” section in the bottom of the article posting section and let the poster state there whether he/she agrees with the information posted, disagrees with the information, just posting the information for news, or suggests that it may be interesting information.

If I understand you correctly. You want to respond to author instead of posted by.

I don't think the author would reply unless they wrote it themself. So if that is the case it seems kind of silly.

Besides its hardcoded in and it can't be changed as far as I know.

I also don't want to bug neil to much about doing stuff.

Okay, I understand.

I will just make my statement in the newly found block, that you directed me to.

Then when I respond to an article, I will ask the poster's position if I am interested.

That will work out okay.

BTW, you showed me the "Post Comment Block" on the Setup page, I just remembered that I showed you the "Change Password" on the Setup page.
