HARLOTTE, N.C. — The optimism exuded by Republican state House Speaker Thom Tillis’ campaign and supporters Tuesday in the early evening, panned out later tonight when the challenger defeated the incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) in one of the tightest, most expensive races of the cycle.

The early vote totals showed Hagan leading but as the night wore on Tillis gained ground and as it became apparent that Tillis could win, his supporters — convened for an election night event with the candidate here at the Omni Charlotte Hotel — erupted in loud cheers and chants of “Thom! Thom! Thom!”

The Associated Press called the squeaker election for Tillis at 11:25 PM EST.

While Tillis, a Republican, trailed Hagan over the summer, the polls tightened through the fall to the point where there was hardly any daylight between the two candidates.

“He’s run an incredible campaign,” Rep. Robert Pittenger (R-NC) said of state House Speaker Thom Tillis Tuesday night as the election results came in a brief interview with Breitbart News. T he Republican businessman from Cornelius ran a nationally focused election, attempting to tie Hagan to an unpopular President Obama. The polls narrowed as Tillis and his surrogates hammered Hagan for her apparent improprieties in office and her record of voting with Obama up to 99 percent of the time.

The incumbent kept her focus on making the election a referendum on Tillis and his job as a state House Speaker slamming him for what she called massive cuts to North Carolina education.

Hagan and her supporters took Tillis to task on Democratic hobby-horse issues such as pay equity, Planned Parenthood, contraception, and minimum wage.

Tillis’ campaign emphasized matters like Hagan’s poor attendance record on the Senate Armed Service Committee — including skipping an ISIS briefing to attend a New York City fundraiser— flip-flops on an Ebola travel ban, her Obamacare “lies,” and the fact that her family personally benefited from the 2009 stimulus.

While Obama did not appear in the state with Hagan — in fact she spent a good amount of time trying to distance herself from Obama until the last moments of the election when her campaign ran a radio ad featuring an Obama endorsement — she brought in such Democratic powerhouses as Hillary and Bill Clinton to campaign for her.

Tillis, considered by some conservatives during the GOP primary to be an “establishment“ candidate, brought such Republicans in for his general election bid as former president Mitt Romney, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) to the state.

The state’s senior senator, Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) explained to Breitbart News before the final results came in the importance of Tillis’ election.

“It’s important to me because it means my vote doesn’t get cancelled every time I go to the Senate floor, but from the standpoint of the American people it means that with a majority that’s Republican we can work with the House to put legislation on the president’s desk. And that is what the president hasn’t seen because Harry Reid didn’t allow that process to take place,” Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) told Breitbart News.

And while Hagan and Tillis were the two headliners there was also a wild card in the mix: Libertarian Sean Haugh, a pizza delivery man, also appeared on the ballot. As a Libertarian who ran to end all wars, legalize marijuana, and reduce the debt, there were question marks as to from who he would pull votes.

Both Tillis and Hagan supporters attempted to use his presence on the ballot as a way to tug votes away from one another — both at times advertising on Haugh's behalf, focusing on those aspects of his candidacy that would appeal to the other side.

Tillis, who watched the returns come in at the Omni Charlotte Hotel with his family, is scheduled to speak later in the evening.

Nice that you say so. Thank you. I watched a lot of good stories and threads get hijacked by some on LP. I suspect it was intentional.

I suspect you are correct.

Have you seen any articles yet on just how many seats went from D to R across the nation? I know in 2010 it was between 7-800.

Here are the House gains from Viennacon:

John Ratcliffe (TX-4) - Shot down incumbent Ralph Hall in the Republican primary. Ran unopposed.

Dave Brat (VA-7) - Astonishingly demolished incumbent house majority leader Eric Cantor in arguably the cycle's biggest upset. Won the general.

Tom Emmer (MN-6) - Succeeding Bachmann, Emmer has a solid fiery conservative record. He won easily.

Jody Hice (GA-10) - Succeeding Broun, this guy is infuriating Democrats who are calling him 'the most evil republican of 2014!'... so you know he's solid gold! Easily won in the deep red district and has said he won’t vote for Boehner.

Barry Loudermilk (GA-11) - Succeeding Gingrey, Loudermilk is actually more conservative than his predecessor, endorsed by SCF, ran unopposed and won't vote for Boehner.

Mia Love (UT-4) - Early Tea Party favorite, after much struggle, she is IN!

Alex Mooney (WV-2) - Solid conservative wins the seat previously held by moderate now-Republican-senator Shelly Moore Capito in a walk.

David Rouzer (NC-7) - Been waiting to come to congress for a while, this was his year. Replaced retiring blue dog Democrat Mike McIntyre.

Ken Buck (CO-4) - Likely to be a little more conservative than now-Republican- senator Cory Gardner, former 2010 senate candidate is now a congressman.

Barbara Comstock (VA-10) - A Mark Levin pick for congress, she won easily the seat of retired RINO Frank Wolf.

Bruce Poliquinn (ME-2) - A very conservative candidate who won the primary in an upset. Establishment thought he'd lose. He didn't.

Cresent Hardy (NV-4) - Conservative state assemblyman. He beat Democrat Steven Horseford in an upset. Democrats already griping that he's a radical.

Mike Bost (IL-12) - Dubbed Meltdown Mike for his explosive defenses of the 2nd Amendment on the floor of the state house, he is going to be giving as much hell to the democrats and RINOs as Steve Stockman did.

Rick Allen (GA-12) – Finally laid to rest hard-to-hit Democrat John Barrow, the last white Democrat in the deep south. Tea endorsed.

Gary Palmer (AL-6) - Seizing the seat held by retiring RINO Spencer Bachus is a solid Alabama conservative.

French Hill (AR-2) – Retiring representative Tim Griffin had a pathetic conservative rating of 52%. Hill was Tea Party endorsed and won a narrow race against the rat.

Lt. Col. Steve Russell (OK-5) – Replacing Boehner acolyte James Lankford who won the senate race for the seat of retiring Tom Coburn, Russell will be much more likely to buck the establishment.

John Moolenaar (MI-4) – Replacing retiring Dave Camp, who scored a pathetic 50% with Heritage, Moolenaar has a solid record behind him and was Tea endorsed.

Glenn Grothman (WI-6) – Retiring Tom Petri was a little too cozy with the establishment. Grothman is a hair on fire conservative who the dems absolutely despise and he just won by over ten points.

Johnny Tacherra (CA-16)??? - Seems on course to unseat Democrat incumbent Jim Costa in an upset nobody saw coming. He comes out of the Tim Donnelly school of California right wing thought. This one is NOT yet secure, and Costa will likely try to steal it with provisionals.

Also big news is Texas 23. Heavy Hispanic district stretching from San Antonio to South Texas. Long time seat holder Gallego (D) defeated by African-American Hurd (R).

Gov elect Greg Abbott took 44% of the Hispanic/Latino vote, and a plurality of Latino male vote.

The entire Texas Ground Zero Dem effort folded.

How is Abbot on illegal immigration?

One thing that the national media has largely ignored is that there has been a Tea Party Tsunami in state-level Texas politics.

Open-borders quisling Rick Perry will be replaced by Abbott, who campaigned strongly against the Mexican invasion.

In Texas, the Lieutenant Governor position is actually one of the most powerful ones because he controls which bills get voted on in the Texas Senate. Perry's chosen successor, open-borders quisling David Dewhurst, was kicked out by the Tea Party in the primary and he will now be replaced by a former conservative radio talk show host Dan Patrick, who campaigned on fighting illegal immigration.

In the Texas House, many of the open-borders establishment Republicans were also ousted. John Carona, for example, was replaced by Don Huffines. Huffines campaign focused on the fact that Carona had voted for Perry's so-called 'Dream Act' that gives instate tuition to illegal aliens.

Since Perry has seen which way the wind is blowing, he has pulled a few photo- op stunts like sending National Guard troops to the border to try to get people to forget his open-borders past.

And he received 44% of the Hispanic vote, of which a plurality of the Hispanic male vote.

So goes to show Texans of all ethnic backgrounds are not thrilled with the invasion.

As you know it helps that Abbott is married to a Mexican-American woman, and converted to her faith.

Indeed, wanting for our nation to remain sovereign and free is not racism, despite the left and Chamber of Commerce crowds' attempts to label it as such.

Hispanic Americans and blacks are among the groups hurt the most by open borders, since the invaders take their jobs and drive down wages for them. Additionally, I know personally many legal latino immigrants and latinos whose families have been American for many generations that really hate being associated with a group of criminals.

When polled, even most Democrats want for our immigration laws to be enforced. This issue is not really a left-right divide, but one between the regular citizens and a ruling class that wants a permanent serf class.

I do talk with liberals, and a lot of them are also filled with dread over where are nation is headed. You hit the nail on the head about the new divide.

And a lot of them still turn out to vote for "their guy" on a regular basis, even though the country is going down the toilet because of "their guy".

And a lot of them still turn out to vote for "their guy" on a regular basis, even though the country is going down the toilet because of "their guy".

Very true. And a lot of us voted for Jorge Arbusto and Juan McAmnesty. We were voting for what seemed the lesser of two evils, even though in 2000 (for example) we had a choice of Pat Buchanan. Had he been elected in 2000 our nation would have avoided a great deal of misfortune.

I am used to being stabbed in the back by the RNC country club types, I fully expect it. I'd like to stab them in the back. The Roman republic was destroyed by the plutocrats, the same thing is happening here. The billionaires are funding the elections, leading to the horrible choices offered by the two parties.

This is a war for the future of America, the billionaires are funding our enemies. It is folly in war to grant safe haven to the enemies logistics, we tried that several times (Korea, Vietnam) with awful results. The billionaires are the Ho Chi Minh trail for the destruction of the historic American nation. You've got to hit your enemies logistics, otherwise you are not serious about winning.

A lot of folks on the left want to jack up taxes on the wealthy, here is a chance to meet them halfway and serve our own objective in the long run. I believe in the free enterprise system, but that is not how the current crop of billionaires made their fortunes. They are much more like an aristocracy living off rents, not from land as in the classic sense, but rents created by the government assigning values to things that our far different than what a free market would value them at. And they see to it that whores get elected to pass the legislation to create those fiat values. Therefore, they are the enemy's logistics.

This is a war, and in war you sometimes need to advance in a direction that is different from what your actual objective is. Look at the map of Alexander's progress into the Persian Empire. He by no means followed the direct path to Susa and Persepolis, sometimes even advancing in the opposite direction. But whichever way he was advancing, he was in reality advancing towards his objective regardless of which way his army was marching. And a lot of that was dictated by logistics, securing his own and disrupting that of Darius. We need to think more in terms of strategy and less of ideology.

Your thoughts on post# 27?

This would be a great discussion to have offline over a pint, because there are a lot of pieces to the answer. Your map of Alexander's conquest leads to a discussion of polis itself, and of the sense - or lack thereof - of excessive devotion to some government polity because by random chance one happens to have been born within its borders.

When one reads ancient Greek literature, one sees the ancient Greeks drip of pride for their city state, and speak of their duty to these little entities as being of the highest order of all.

When one looks objectively at what the Greek cities were, though, one realizes that they were all shitholes. So, the Greeks were passionately dedicated to vaunting their own particular little shit hole. That's nice, but roosters do the same thing. Go into the barnyard and listen for the rooster. There he is, crowing from the top of the dungheap, Lord of the Barnyard (in his own eyes anyway), the King of Crap.

When you really start looking at governments and cities and their organization, hygiene and politics, they don't live up to the hype. They're grotty, corrupt, and unhygienic.

For all of their vaunting about their cities, we ought to be able to see that the cities themselves were just cities, nothing to write home about, and that the vaunting was not just a vainglorious waste of time, it was actually pernicious to the Greeks individually; for all of that boasting led to wars to prove the point, and the wars broke all of the cities, and ultimately resulted in the universal weakening of Greece, so that it was conquered by other people (notably, the Romans), who looked down on all of them collectively (justly or no).

I think that the answer is to stop vaunting civics and politics and parties, and start returning to the fundamental truths about what human beings are, what life is, Who is King, what the King's laws are. And then we should compare polities and politics to the King's laws...and find them wanting, and stay firmly aligned with the King over and against all politics that swerve even an inch to the left or the right of the King's Law.
