Has Scheppers managed to get thru an appearance yet without giving up some runs?

I thought they cashiered him like Ross.

That conversion to starter screwed up his arm and Ross too.

I guess the question is why bring in a pitcher who was out for almost a year into a two run game in the 8th. Pitch him with a bigger lead or way behind.

You know if more guys would learn to go with the pitch instead of trying to force the pitch they could raise their average at least 30 points maybe more. To me it's utterly amazing why some guys who have all of this talent can't figure that out. Is their ego that big, their IQ that low or the coaches that dumb? Duhhhhhhh..

I think the better hitters who do go opposite field are astute to knowing when such a pitch is coming. Others are just out there trying to figure out what's coming next and end up only hitting the ball when a pitcher makes a mistake.

Elvis lost right now. As are many of the Ranger batters. Fielder knows what his scouting report says I'm sure and he makes adjustments.

I thought they cashiered him like Ross.

No they put him on the DL to start the season because he had some kind of injury early in the spring and wasn't ready for opening day. Problem is he couldn't get anybody out in Spring Training, during his rehab and now in the majors.

I think the better ones do it on purpose so the pitchers can't figure out what to throw them on a regular basis to get them out.

I can't even start to opine on the game I watched on Sunday.

Got back from the gym early afternoon with younger son (sonny boy) cleaned up, made a sandwich and said 'cool a Rangers game is on.' Realized Detwiler has some real issues getting batters out; Rangers can hit bad pitching pretty good; and Banister has much to learn about Tanner Sheppers.

I have to say these decisions to bring certain folks up is front office type decisions, so give Banister a pass the FIRST NIGHT he used Scheppers. He probably thought, 'hey this is a professional organization, and the FO would not give me a player who is not MLB ready to play.' So he gets the pass bringing in Scheppers in Friday's game. He gets a slap on the back for pulling the plug on Scheppers before losing the lead. He gets and ok for brining in Scheppers with a 4 run lead. But after the first or second walk, he gets a head scratch from me as if he needed more to see to get someone else on the mound.

Being generous, the Rangers win tops 70 games this year.

It is quite sad to see this team struggle so much.

Is this the curse of Nolan Ryan:)

Scheppers isn't ready to take back his spot in the 8th inning yet. He should have been left in the minors until he had shown he could get somebody out, which he hasn't done all spring.

I would have brought in Kela after Bass cause it wasn't a stressful situation and I would bet he would have done better. If he could have gotten 3 or 4 outs then you could have then brought in Tolleson for the 8th and saved Feliz for the 9th.

He should have never left in the first place, I really wonder what Daniels is thinking sometimes with the crap he pulls.

He could have gotten Cruz for $13-14 mill per year and had a power hitter in the prime of career, for $10 mill less than the one he replaced him with. I also think he could have gotten Choo for less and why didn't he trade Hamilton for a pitcher when he knew he was going to let him walk in Free Agency.

I have a sneaking suspicion Daniels isn't going to be here much longer. If I was the owner he would already have a new zipcode.

All good and valid points.

JD was a 'rain man' when he was younger. The other GMs and owners did not see him as a rising and aggressive star GM. What 'magic' or tricks he pulled to get what was needed for the 1-11 teams will never be repeated.

He did shift focus to the farm and that has been a mixed bag. The farm reports on Luke and Chi Chi G. have not been good so far this year. Both are struggling with minor league batters. Perhaps they worked them too hard in the Spring and they need to be skipped in the rotation a few times to give them a rest. Oh and Gallo is in a boot for heel surgergy. Starting to sound like Mike Olt all over again.

LOL I saw that.

That had to be JD's worst deal yet...the contract extension of Elvis. He had two young sprouts in the farm who could take EAs spot for a fraction of the cost.

At least one of the big three contracts have to be dumped. Either EA, Prince or Choo. All three are toxic contracts no one wants to take on except maybe the Yankees. Even they will ask for some cash in return. Heck we are still paying A-Rod to hit HRs or sit on his duff for the Yankees.

Let's see...Goldsmitd goes 3-5 tonight. Martinez gets slammed by the second inning. His no ER streak will have to end sooner or later.

Track record for young Rangers pitchers is to do well in the first two or three weeks of the season then get "figured out."

Nostradamus you're not. :)

That makes what 10 games in a row now for Martinez of at least 6 innings and 2 ER or less, I'd say he's a keeper.

"Evis" must have heard all the grumbling about his crappy play and contract, he got 2 hits last night.

Looks like some of the bats are waking up but not enough of them, got way too many people with sub .200 averages. My dogs could hit .200 :)

Look at the box score to see how he used the pen last night, used Kela ahead of Tolleson. Looks like Scheppers finally got someone out for a change, he pitched the 9th.

They should have called the Yankees the day Jeter announced his retirement, they could have at least got a "bag of used pucks" (derogatory hockey term) in return. Oh wait maybe they did and the Yanks told them to FO..

Not any worse than what the big league team is doing, didn't both of them move up this year?

I knew about Gallo had some loose chips or something, said he would be out at least 3 weeks.

Now I hear Moreland has loose chips in his elbow he needs to get rid of, might as well do it right now instead of waiting. He'd only be out 10-14 days so why not now.

If they can stay close to .500 until Holland, Perez and Harrison have a chance to pitch again they may not do too bad. But they have to get the bats going soon or when they start playing better teams it will be all over, including the crying.

Like someone else we know who wanted to play 2B but wasn't really that good at it and they were too chicken to force him to play the OF. Then they traded him and he really took off, after his new team forced him to play the OF. The guy ended up with over 400 HRs for his career.

Rangers struggling tonight. After such a good night last night.

It's hard not having a #1 or #2 rotation pitcher to start the season. Gallardo is no #1 or even #2. It's ok to have a bunch of 3s and 4s when you have a consistent offense like we did in 10-11.

Good thing everyone else in the AL West is struggling too.

I think the Offense will finally get its act together and they will stay close to .500 for awhile. They can't all hit below the Mendoza line for the entire season.

Houston just moved into last place yesterday for team batting average at .216. So there is at least one team who's bats suck worse than the Rangers.

It doesn't surprise me I think some of those teams played over their heads last year.

Let's see...

'Stros still struggling for consistency. Once they play outside the division they will fall apart. BP is WAY much better but still...

Billy Beane gutted his team and two of the better OPS players are on DL for a few more weeks I think. One of them being Reddick. Good #1-3 starters but beyond that struggling like everyone else. Beane killed his magic gnome team.

Angels even with Puhols and Trout are struggling to produce runs. They too have issues with pitchers at the back of the rotation. Not like the Rangers do but they do not have the magic of last year.

Mariners were picked to be 'the team to beat' not only in the AL West but in the playoffs along with KC and Detroit. Their line up is very good and looks as deep as the Rangers 2011 line up; however, they too have back end of the rotation issues.

The Rangers as I mentioned above are the most at risk given they do not currently have a #1 nor a #2 to toe the mound. Nick Martinez will be a solid #4 or even a #3 when he fully develops. Position/location pitchers without an effective heater will not raise up to the top two in the rotation. That's fine and I'm sure no one is trying to make him 'ace' material.

But the biggest problem for the Rangers is offense. The first three weeks of the season shows the Rangers CAN hit average and struggling pitching but they are blanked when a good pitcher is on the mound.

The fact the other teams in the division have some back end of the rotation issues may keep the Rangers afloat until help arrives. Plus if they 'luck out' most of the division series not catching a Sonny Gray or Jared Weaver or King Felix, will help. But it always seems they get those guys:)

11 in a row for the Met's getting it down with a deep DL but healthy and good pitching. At the link don't forget to take a look at Bartolo Colon running down a tag. Big boy and glad he is no longer on the A's.

Good news we may have a lefty reliever soon...Claudio seems to be doing better in RR:

Texas Rangers may add lefty reliever soon

Other than the Scheppers 2X fiasco, Banister showed he is much better making BP calls. He is not making who pitches the 7th and 8th predictable which is good. Keeping the opposing manager and bench coach thinking. Any advantage opens doors.

I shut off the 8-1 romp the other night only to realize it ended 8-5 with 4 runs in the 9th. Again confirming that with good pitching, teams can beat the Rangers. If however, this offense proves to be like the 2010 late come back Rangers (getting to BPs) I think we can hang in there for an end of year fight IF Holland and Perez are truly healthy when they come back. Matt Harrison, is a wild card...we shall see. I said the same thing about Colby though:)

I'm not too worried about Holland, Perez probably won't pitch much before Aug or Sept so am not expecting much.

Harrison I think will be back by July at the latest, he just did a 75 pitch BP session earlier this week and is going to do a 80 pitch BP session "today". They next thing up for him will be live batters and pitching in the minors to finish his rehab. They say he is looking really good and very anxious to get back to pitching in the majors.

Update on Hammy: Deal is done.

6:16pm: The Rangers will pick up about $15MM of Hamilton’s salary, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports tweets. Los Angeles will pay the remainder of the $83MM that he is owed

So the Rangers pick up about 20% of the money. Frankly that is not a bad deal if this is spread out over the remaining three years. If he starts producing and the Rangers are not contenders this year, then he can be an economical trade deadline piece for prospects.

Oh well I guess we will see how this all turns out.

He's currently going thru a divorce, coming back from surgery and last I seen his stroke sucked, lots of bad things going on right now.

If Magaden and Jones can help him find his stroke this may turn out OK, if not then it will end up as I fear a clusterphuck.

Good news we may have a lefty reliever soon...Claudio seems to be doing better in RR:

He is not making who pitches the 7th and 8th predictable which is good. Keeping the opposing manager and bench coach thinking. Any advantage opens doors.

Yea I seen that. Now Tolleson can go back to his normal roll of 7th and 8th inning.

Most people like knowing what their role is and when they are to be doing it, makes it easier on the player and the manager. I also think the opposing manager knowing so and so will be pitching in certain situations sometimes forces him to do things he doesn't really want to do, so it works both ways.

Remember the Nasty Boys?

Opposing managers knew that they had to shoot their entire wad before the 7th inning if the wanted to win the game, cause if they didn't it was all over but the crying.

The Nasty boys were originally made up of 5 pitchers Tim Layana, Tim Birtsas, Norm Charlton, Rob Dibble and Randy Myers. But because of the outstanding job the later 3 did in the 1990 WS history really only remembers those 3.

There is an image (I can't find it) where they were all holding on to this plate of flaming baseballs, looked cool.

Yes I remember the nasty boys. Especially Dibble.
