(CBS News) Humanity's family tree may need some pruning. The discovery of an ancient skull has revealed clues that could shake up the accepted theories of human evolution. From the moment they discovered the skull buried under a village in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, scientists knew they had something applause-worthy. At 1.8 million years old, the skull may do nothing less than rewrite the history of humanity. "It's an almost perfectly complete skull," said Jamie Shreeve, executive science editor for National Geographic, "and because of that, it has a lot of information." "Skull 5," as it's known, belonged to an adult male with a large jutting jaw and brain case less than half the size of a human today. Four other partial skulls were found with it, dating from the same time but with great variations from each other -- the same kind of variations seen in modern humans. "We don't call modern human pygmies and Eskimos different species obviously," said Shreeve, "and so they think we should not call these things a different species, too." Meaning that instead of many branches in our evolutionary family tree thought to lead to us, like homo habilis and homo ergaster, they may all have just been one: homo erectus. "You have to be really careful with this," said Shreeve, "because in paleoanthropology you are measuring individuals in order to make conclusions about whole populations or whole species." Like evolution itself, the understanding of it is a work in progress.

History does change with new discoveries. Why is your mind so closed? What's your opinion on the Shroud of Turin?
What's your opinion on the Shroud of Turin? We learn more things about history. But it doesn't change. Some things are thrown out because they are crap. But the Bible is the true early history and it doesn't change. The Shroud could be real or fake. I don't know. I would like it to be authentic. But if it isn't it doesn't make any difference as to what God said about how we should behave and what is going to happen.

What in the Bible makes you think like a serf? What was translated incorrectly. You're as stupid as the ferret witch. All these years and you have never been able to provide one citation of something in the Bible that is incorrect. You are the serf on your knees taking it from the Kenyan.
This program ran on the History Channel latest year. It's well worth watching. Basically computer scientists have shown that the image on the shroud encodes 3D information, as if the shroud was draped over a person's face while the image was being made. You can't even prove those people ever existed. Other than counterparts in related and much older myths and fables spread by oral traditions. Which means they were never originally written down by the reputed authors.

Brian thanks for the article. Saw a similar one about a week ago. The quote above is encouraging. They have one skull and the other skulls around it seem to be within "norms." Glad to see some honest scientists wanting to be careful because of all the previous enthusiastic failures we have seen before like "Lucy".
