A longtime Republican strategist is not speaking favorably about Liz Cheney’s chances of being elected to a U.S. Senate Seat. According to The Hill, former Vice President Dick Cheney’s daughter will come across to voters in the Wyoming Senate election as a “bored housewife” with nothing better to do than to carpetbag her way into office. Ed Rollins, former top campaign brass to former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), said that Cheney’s political opponents will see to it that her Senate run is “portrayed as they’ve been away from the state a long time, a housewife who’s kind of bored who moved back to Wyoming after a long time to run for the Senate.” In remarks to The Hill on Thursday, Rollins continued, “Unfortunately for Liz, that’s not a state like California or New York where you can carpetbag very easily, and even though she was born there she hasn’t been there for a long time.” While her father may have been one of the most feared and powerful men on the planet during the previous presidential administration, Liz Cheney is running the risk of alienating many Wyoming GOP stalwarts, who see her as an arriviste who is attempting to unseat a beloved member of her own party, Sen. Mike Enzi (R), Wyoming’s Senator since 1991. One Wyoming newspaper published an editorial [subscription req.] on Wednesday entitled “No Cheney Required,” that read, in part, “Hey, Liz Cheney: If you want to run for U.S. Senate, try it from Virginia or some other state. We already have a U.S. senator — one who has spent his life in Wyoming, one who took on the unenviable job of leading Gillette through the boom in the ’70s and ’80s, one who served for years in the Wyoming House and Senate before he ran for the U.S. Senate, one who could be in line for chairmanship of the Senate Finance Committee, and most importantly, one who says he wants to run again.” “Great,” wrote Gillette News Record Editor Ann K. Turner, “Win-at-all-costs Cheney — who even alienated the president he was serving under — is ready to create a civil war in Wyoming.” Former Wyoming Sen. Alan K. Simpson said Cheney’s decision to run will spell “the destruction of the Republican Party of Wyoming” and called the situation “a disaster — a divisive, ugly situation — and all it does is open the door for the Democrats for 20 years.”
