Senator (Lindsey Graham) Vows To Delay Obama's Nominees Over Libya

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A leading Republican senator said Sunday he would hold up Senate confirmation of President Barack Obama's nominees to head the Defense Department and the CIA until the White House provided more answers about the deadly Sept. 11 attack against a U.S. installation in Benghazi, Libya.

The White House took aim at Sen. Lindsey Graham, a persistent critic of Obama's response to the terrorist assault, by urging quick approval of the president's second-term national security team and scolding any lawmakers trying to "play politics" with critical nominations.

Graham accused the White House of "stonewalling" requests to release more information about the attack that killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya. "We're going to get to the bottom of Benghazi," he told CBS.

A Democratic colleague branded Graham's threat to stall the nominations of former Sen. Chuck Hagel to be defense secretary and John Brennan, Obama's top counterterrorism adviser, to be CIA director as "unprecedented and unwarranted." Senators should have the chance to vote on the fate of those nominees, said Sen. Jack Reed.

The White House did not address Graham's demand for more information, but did note that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, testified Thursday before Congress about the chaotic day of the Sept. 11 attack.

Republicans have accused the Obama administration of an election-year cover-up of the attack, and at the hearing several suggested the commander in chief was disengaged as Americans died.

"We know nothing about what the president did on the night of September 11th during a time of national crisis, and the American people need to know what their commander in chief did, if anything, during this eight-hour attack," Graham said on CBS.

Graham contended that a six-person rescue team was delayed from leaving the Benghazi airport because of problems "with the militias releasing them and a lot of bureaucratic snafus," and he said he wants to know whether Obama called any Libyan officials to expedite their mission.

"I don't think we should allow Brennan to go forward for the CIA directorship, Hagel to be confirmed to secretary of defense until the White House gives us an accounting," Graham said, adding, "What did he do that night? That's not unfair. The families need to know, the American people need to know."

Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for the White House's National Security Council, said, "We believe the Senate should act swiftly to confirm John Brennan and Sen. Hagel. These are critical national security positions and individual members shouldn't play politics with their nominations."

Reed said that "to dwell on a tragic incident and use that to block people is not appropriate. To try to find information, to ask legitimate questions, as Senator Graham is doing is completely appropriate. But then to turn around and say, `I'm going to disrupt, essentially, the nomination of two key members of the President's Cabinet,' I don't think that's appropriate, I don't think it's warranted, I think it is an overreaction that is not going to serve the best interest going forward of the national security of the United States."

Graham would have none of it.

"In a constitutional democracy, we need to know what our commander in chief was doing at a time of great crisis, and this White House has been stonewalling the Congress, and I'm going to do everything I can to get to the bottom of this so we'll learn from our mistakes and hold this president accountable for what I think is tremendous disengagement at a time of national security crisis," he said.

At the Senate hearing, Panetta testified that he and Dempsey were meeting with Obama when they first learned of the Libya assault. He said the president told them to deploy forces as quickly as possible. Graham asked whether Panetta spoke again to Obama after that first meeting. Panetta said no, but that the White House was in touch with military officials and aware of what was happening. At one point, Graham asked Panetta if he knew what time Obama went to sleep that night. The Pentagon chief said he did not. (1 image)

Lady Lindsay will do anything to keep his US military dependent warmongering SC contituents happy. But there was not one peep from him after the many, many times our consulates and embassies were attacking during the Bush regime.

"many times our consulates and embassies were attacking during the Bush regime".

This needless, senseless tragidy being discussed here happened on Obama's watch, this article is not about Bush, but if you insist, then by all means, post your 'documented facts' of any embassy attacks where the military did not respond, and where the residents were helpless, outnumbered, and murdered, under Bush's watch...but if you have no similar incidences to prove your point, then please, do me another favore and...

STFU!!

Sure it is. It's about conservatives like Lady Lindsay showing what hypopcrits they can be. Especially when they refuse to fund the extra security needed for those same embassies.

2002: U.S. Consulate In Karachi, Pakistan, Attacked; 10 Killed, 51 Injured. From a June 15, 2002, Chicago Tribune article:

Police cordoned off a large area around the U.S. Consulate late Friday and began combing through the carnage and debris for clues after a car explosion killed at least 10 people, injured 51 others and left Pakistan's largest city bleeding from yet another terrorist atrocity.

No Americans were among the dead, and only six of the injured were inside the consulate compound at the time of the blast Friday morning. One Pakistani police officer on guard outside the building was among the dead, but many of those killed were pedestrians or motorists in the area at the time of the explosion.

The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad reported that five Pakistani consular employees and a Marine guard were slightly wounded by flying debris.

Suspicion for the attack immediately fell on Islamic militants known to be active in Karachi. [Chicago Tribune, 6/15/02, via Nexis]

2004: U.S. Embassy Bombed In Uzbekistan. From a July 31, 2004, Los Angeles Times article:

Suicide bombers on Friday struck the U.S. and Israeli embassies in Uzbekistan, killing two local guards and injuring at least nine others in the second wave of attacks this year against a key U.S. ally during the war in Afghanistan.

The prosecutor general's office also was hit in the coordinated afternoon attacks in the capital city of Tashkent. It sustained more damage than either of the embassies, where guards prevented bombers from entering.

The attacks came as 15 Muslim militants linked to the Al Qaeda terrorist network went on trial in a series of bombings and other assaults in March that killed 47 people.

The explosions Friday caused relatively little physical damage but rattled a country in which the U.S. has maintained an air base crucial to the battle against Islamic militants in neighboring Afghanistan. [Los Angeles Times, 7/31/04, via Nexis]

2004: Gunmen Stormed U.S. Consulate In Saudi Arabia. From a December 6, 2004, New York Times article:

A group of attackers stormed the American Consulate in the Saudi Arabian city of Jidda today, using explosives at the gates to breach the outer wall and enter the compound, the Saudi Interior Ministry said in a statement. At least eight people were killed in the incident, in which guards and Saudi security forces confronted the group, according to the ministry and news agencies.

Three of the attackers were killed. Five non-American employees were killed, an American embassy spokesman, Carol Kalin, told Reuters. She declined to provide the nationality of those killed, but said they were members of the consulate staff.

Reuters reported that Saudi security officials said four of their men also died in the incident, which would bring the death toll to 12. [The New York Times, 12/6/04]

2006: Armed Men Attacked U.S. Embassy In Syria. From a September 13, 2006, Washington Post article:

Four armed men attacked the U.S. Embassy on Tuesday, killing one Syrian security guard and wounding several people in what authorities said was an attempt by Islamic guerrillas to storm the diplomatic compound.

Just after 10 a.m., gunmen yelling " Allahu akbar " -- "God is great" -- opened fire on the Syrian security officers who guard the outside of the embassy in Damascus's Rawda district, witnesses said. The attackers threw grenades at the compound, according to witnesses, and shot at the guards with assault rifles during the 15- to 20-minute clash, which left three of the gunmen dead and the fourth reportedly wounded. [The Washington Post, 9/13/06]

2007: Grenade Launched Into U.S. Embassy In Athens. From The New York Times:

An antitank grenade was fired into the heavily fortified American Embassy here just before dawn today. The building was empty, but the attack underscored deep anti-American sentiment here and revived fears of a new round of homegrown terror.

Greek officials said they doubted the attack was the work of foreign or Islamic terrorists, but rather that of regrouped extreme leftists aiming at a specific, symbolic target: a huge American seal, of a double-headed eagle against a blue background, affixed to the front of the boxy, modern embassy near downtown. [The New York Times, 1/12/07]

2008: Rioters Set Fire To U.S. Embassy In Serbia. From The New York Times:

Demonstrators attacked the U.S. Embassy here and set part of it ablaze Thursday as tens of thousands of angry Serbs took to the streets of Belgrade to protest Kosovo's declaration of independence.

Witnesses said that at least 300 rioters broke into the embassy and torched some of its rooms. One protester was able to rip the American flag from the facade of the building. An estimated 1,000 demonstrators cheered as the vandals, some wearing masks to conceal their faces, jumped onto the building's balcony waving a Serbian flag and chanting "Serbia, Serbia!" the witnesses said. A convoy of police officers firing tear gas was able to disperse the crowd. [The New York Times, 2/21/08]

2008: Ten People Killed In Bombings At U.S. Embassy In Yemen. From The New York Times:

Militants disguised as soldiers detonated two car bombs outside the United States Embassy compound in Sana, Yemen, on Wednesday morning, killing 16 people, including 6 of the attackers, Yemeni officials said.

No American officials or embassy employees were killed or wounded, embassy officials said. Six of the dead were Yemeni guards at the compound entrance, and the other four killed were civilians waiting to be allowed in.

It was the deadliest and most ambitious attack in years in Yemen, a poor south Arabian country of 23 million people where militants aligned with Al Qaeda have carried out a number of recent bombings. [The New York Times, 9/17/08]

Capitalist Eric: "Hmmm... Avoiding the question, when challenged to provide proof. You're not fooling anybody with that crap."

mininggold: "2002: 2004: 2004: 2006: 2007: 2008: 2008:"

I don't believe there is a person here who would disagree with you about our embassies being attacked under Bushs' watch, but I didn't see anywhere in those attacks where we lost an Ambassador, or the Ambassador begging for more security and support, only to be ignored and abandoned by the Bush administration...maybe you can peruse your articles and show everyone where Bush was negligent and incompetent in dealing with these attacks?

I'll post what I have, go through it, see if you can compare anything Bush did before, during, and after those attacks that would be even remotely SIMILAR to Obama's Negligence!

******************************************************

"For the first time since Jimmy Carter, we’ve had an American ambassador assassinated,"

It took 19 hours for military assistance to arrive

There was a 19-hour gap between the time when Panetta first ordered military units to prepare to deploy – between midnight and 2 a.m. local time in Tripoli – and the time a Marine anti-terrorism team landed in Tripoli, which as just before 9 p.m.

Why so long?

Ambassador Chris Stevens warned repeatedly of threats to the Benghazi mission for months, requesting more security. On the day of the attack, three hours before it began and roughly five hours before Stevens was killed, the Benghazi consulate alerted State that radical Islamist terrorists had begun “gathering weapons and gathering steam,”

Obama’s own admission that HE sent Susan Rice out to pimp a lie to the American public

Susan Rice claimed the Benghazi attack was a spontaneous reaction to a YouTube video. What happened in Benghazi and the story pushed out by this administration was a willful lie about known and confirmed events.

More than two hours after the initial assault began, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta stated he ordered the mobilization of two special Marine platoons known as Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team (FAST) from Rota, Spain, to deploy to Tripoli and Benghazi. Panetta also stated he ordered a special operations force, training in central Europe, to deploy at the Signonella Airbase in Italy. Another special operations team based in the United States also prepared to deploy to Libya.

None of those teams ever arrived in Benghazi.

Not only was President Obama not involved in the process except for a single phone call, but he was absent entirely from the White House during the attack.

Panetta and Dempsey had a pre-scheduled meeting with Obama at 5:00 p.m. Washington, D.C. time on Sept. 11. The meeting lasted about thirty minutes. After it was over, they did not hear from Obama again or anybody else at the White House.

According to the official White House schedule for Wednesday, September 12, Obama left the White House for Andrews Air Force Base and the flight to Las Vegas at 2:05 pm.

The following day, Friday, Obama and Clinton were at Andrews AFB at 2.15 pm for a ceremony marking the arrival from Libya of the flag-draped caskets carrying the remains of Stevens, foreign service officer Sean Smith, and former Navy Seals Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty.

Obama returned to the White House at 3:15 pm, and at 7 pm attended another campaign event, at a private residence in Washington, the schedule shows.

Mark Levin: “Our Ambassador, Americans, our consulate – under attack, fighting for their lives! And the President of the United States apparently went to sleep. Or maybe to a concert. Or maybe planning his next golf game. I don’t know. But he was AWOL.”

Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Mike Rogers, R- Mich., .."the State and Defense Departments did not take appropriate precautions to prevent the attacks."

"The intelligence said they're looking for western targets. That they want to be more aggressive. All of that is right. What I find absolute gross negligence in is they did not take the right precautions" to protect the U.S. compound in Benghazi."

Senate, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., echoed his remarks about the response to the attacks that killed four Americans. "American officials listened to some of the concerns reported by U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens about weak security, but they didn't do enough to protect him and his colleagues."

Rep. Mike Rogers: "Somebody was absolutely negligent in not providing the right security to the ambassador and the employees that lost their lives that day. And somebody should be held accountability for that and we shouldn't walk away from that," Rogers added.

**************************************

Here is a timeline of just a few key FACTS (and I stress a few) leading up to the terrorist attack on the anniversary of 9/11 at our consulate in Benghazi- an attack that left Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead...

*February 1, 2012: A memorandum from Eric Nordstrom, regional security officer, stated that "Al-Qaida affiliated groups, including Al-Qaida In the Islamic Magreb (AQIM), and other violent extremist groups are likely to take advantage of the ongoing political turmoil in Libya. The U.S. Government remains concerned that such individuals and groups...may use Libya as a platform from which to conduct attacks in the region.

However, at the very time our folks on the ground began demanding more security, the State Department began considerig plans to further REDUCE the already insufficient security in Libya for our deplomatic personel..

*April 6, 2012: A bomb is thrown over the wall of the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi.

*May 22, 2012: A Red Cross compound is attacked by a radical Islamic group with Al-Qaeda connections- the same group that just two weeks later would plant and detonate an imporvised explosive (IED) at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi.

*June 6, 2012: An IED is detonated near the north gate of the consulate compound in Benghazi, blowing a large hole in the perimeter security wall- the primary defense mechanism for the compound.

*June 2012: Following the attempt on the life of their Ambassador, Great Britain withdraws their diplomatic staff from Libya due to rapidly increasing secuity concerns in Libya.

*June 2012: Ambassador Stevens sends a diplomatic cable to the State Department in which he wrote: "Islamic extremism appears to be on the rise in eastern Libya (Benghazi)...the Al-Qaeda flag has been spotted several tiimes flying over government buildings and training facilities."

*June 25, 2012: Ambassador Stevens notified the Department of Homeland Secrity, the Department of Justice, the State Deparment and other agencies about a "recent increase in violent incidents," including "attacks against western interests" His assesment was that the Libyan government was losing control.

*August 2, 2012: Dispite the deteriorating conditions on the ground and against the stong advice of SST commander LTC Andrew Woods, the State Department orders the removel of two security teams from Libya.

*August 5, 2012: The Red Cross compound in Misrata attacked with grenades and rockets. According to a statement released by the International Committee of the Red Cross, this was the fifth such attack in less than three months.

*August 5, 2012: The 16-member SST team, comprised of former special forces personnel (including LTC Woods), departs from Libya. The mobile security detachment (MSD) is also downsized.

*August 8, 2012: Ambassador Stevens sent a "sensitive" State Department cable entitled "The Guns of August: Security in Eastern Libya." In his cable, Stevens noted that in the space of just a few months, Benghazi has moved from trepidation to euphoria and back as a series of violent incidents has dominated the political landscape." Stevens specifically noted that "he individual incidets have been organized," a function of "the security vacuum tha a diverse group of independent actors are exploiting for their own purposes."

*September 1, 2012: The Libyan Interior Minister puts eastern Libya on HIGH ALERT.

*September 4, 2012: A State Department cable sent by Stevens' aides and signed by Stevens himself reported to Washington that "strong Revolutionary and Islamist sentiment" was prevalent in Benghazi.

*September 11, 2011: On the very day of the attack- the last (day) for Ambassador Stevens and three other Americans- Steven sent a final "sensitive" State Department cable in which he noted a "growing problem with security" in Benghazi and "growing frustrations" that the Libyan police and secrity forces were now simply "too weak to keep the country secure."

On the evening of September 11, 2012, following 230 distinct security incidents (escalating in size, scope and complexity) in Libya during the proceeding year, Islamist terrorists with connections to Al-Qaeda launched a large-scale and highly-complex assault on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi and nearby annex grounds.

There is no conceivable way President Obama could not have know any of this information.

Obama spent weeks blaming a 'video' rather than terrorism for the attack and then claimed that he had informed the American people of all the facts as they became available is beyond absurd, it is the most egregious of lies.

Nice.

The evasions/manipulations of loonybitch never cease to amaze me.

Post all kinds of data.... except what matters.

Disinformation Tactic #20. False evidence.
Whenever possible, introduce new facts or clues designed and manufactured to conflict with opponent presentations as useful tools to neutralize sensitive issues or impede resolution. This works best when the crime was designed with contingencies for the purpose, and the facts cannot be easily separated from the fabrications.
LMAO. How typical.

That is, by far, the single dumbest thing I've ever seen posted.
