The doctor is back, and his new companion is unbelievably gorgeous and immensely talented with a flair for comedy. I'm not ready to throw Amy Pond under the bus yet (she's a redhead)but the new companion is a lot hotter than Amy and I think her hair is dark red, too.

The first episode of this season played a few months ago and it showed a lot of promise for this year, and the second episode that just aired backed that up.

Lots of your favorite aliens are back, and one of them (the fireplug looking little General) is going to be a star of the show. He's hilarious, and he thinks a grenade or two is the answer to most problems.

I'm sure BBCA will air the first two episodes in reruns soon,so catch them if you can. Subscribe to *Movie and Book Review*

It's a GREAT show, but it's one of those odd shows you have to watch a half-dozen times or more before you start to "Get" it. Maybe because it's the British sense of humor we have a hard time understanding, and part of it is probably we are used to watching science fiction that we can take seriously.

Comes on BBCA.

I've stumbled on the show a few times and watched it for a few minutes each. I'll give it a better chance once I figure out the schedule - I know they do replays too. Maybe I'll learn to like the Brit humor.

Edit: Oops, the show I was thinking about wasn't the one you are referring to.

Fred, there is a show that is a off-shoot of Doctor Who that is better in some ways, but it has such a strong homosexual bias I can't stand to watch it. IIRC,3 out of the 5 main characters are "out" homosexuals, and one more is maybe on the edge of being bi.

The Brits are real big on promoting homosexuality as normal, and I even got the sense that was the purpose of the show. The lead character is mostly a homo, but hints that he is sometimes bi. He is also supposed to have been a WW-2 Canadian AF pilot caught in a time stream that can't die or age for some reason. Does this sound familiar? Just remembered,it's called Torchwood.

BTW,both programs come on BBCAmerica.

That show I was thinking about earlier is Doc Martin - on PBS. You ever watch that one?

I know...Doctor Who and Doc Martin almost sound the same. I feel like such a moron.

Never even heard of it. What's it about? Any good?

BTW,MI-5 comes on PBS,and it may be one of the best suspense/spy/action shows that has ever been on tv.

I haven't grasped what Doc Martin is all about the few times I glanced at it. I might check it out closer in 2013.

I'm hitting the road and will see you tomorrow.

Wow, I can't believe you watch the commie channel PBS!!! :-)

Actually, I've seen a few episodes of MI-5. A Japanese channel I had was carrying it. Great show!

That's because you are so one-dimensional.

Not to mention the fact that it runs on BBC America. Only re-runs of old shows appear on PBS.

I do admit to enjoying several shows on PBS,though. Masterpiece Theater and Masterpiece Classics are two of them. NOBODY does historical drama shows like the Brits.

I also like Nova a lot of times. I record them all on my DVR,and then just delete the ones I don't find interesting.

And then there are shows like Austin City Limits.

BTW,I have even contributed to my local PBS station in the past.

I even like their political reports when they are unbiased. Frontline once did a report on the Kennedy Crime Family that tore then a new one. They even reported Patches Kennedy knowingly lying about his opponent during his first congressional race. The guy was probably 60 years old and had physical mobility problems. When he showed up to debate Patches at a Town Hall meeting,Patches jumped behind two of his bodyguards to make sure the crippled old man couldn't get to him,and was peeking over their shoulders to make sure he was safe.

They also reported on the Kennedy family flying in Fat Teddy,Caroline, and a few other Kennedy's to campaign for Patches, and the old widow they rented their campaign headquarters from cooked them all homemade spaghetti. The Kennedy's later stiffed her on a couple of months rent, and Frontline interviewed the old woman about this, and she showed them a letter written to her by the family lawyers offering her a settlement of 1 month's rent, take it or leave it. The also wrote that if she didn't accept the offer they would keep her tied up in court until she was broke.

Yeah, some news programs on PBS are VERY biased towards the left, but for the most part their documentary programs like Frontline treat everyone the same.

Did you get hooked in on that Downton Abbey show? I did somehow a year or so ago. The third season begins this Sunday night at 9 p.m. on PBS/KET.

I watched Doc Martin this evening on PBS. I'm still trying to figure it all out but it is pretty interesting and funny and its a Brit show.

I gave to my church and you donated to PBS? Blasphemy!

Not yet. I watched parts of a couple of shows, but was more focused on shows like Breaking Bad,Boardwalk Empire,Game of Thrones,MI-5,and Justified. IMHO,these are some of the best shows to ever appear on television, and each episode is better than 99 percent of the movies that have ever been shown.

I found the first two seasons are now on amazon.com and since I can watch them for free because I'm a Prime Member.I just started watching it starting at episode 1. I hate starting a series unless I can watch it in order of play.

The only downside to this is I am hard of hearing and trying to understand British accents is tough and there is no closed-captioned shows available for streaming media downloads.

I get two PBS channels where I live, and Doc Martin is on neither.

Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones are great shows. I'd also add The Walking Dead, and Dexter.

The little bit I've seen of Justified is also good.

Breaking Bad was my last favorite TV series - awesome is all I can say about it.

I watch less TV these days. I don't think you're missing anything by not seeing Doctor Martin - it is entertaining and I'll figure out the story line one of these months.

Downton Abbey is very popular and I did watch most of the second season after not watching any of the first. I read a lengthy review about an hour ago - some people take this stuff seriously. Season 3 will be watched by millions.

I'd also add The Walking Dead, and Dexter

I just don't get into the zombie thing, and Dexter struck me as being another one of those programs designed to attract teen females. The writing and acting are pretty good, but having the lead actor playing a sensitive, dark, brooding, shy serial killer who is killing other serial killers to avenge his mama was a step too far for me.

LOTS of guys do like the show, but Dexter is just a touch too metrosexual to suit me.

To be honest, this is the same reason I don't like fantasy sci-fi,and have always avoided movies and books with a fairy princess who uses dragons and magic. IF the first episode of Game of Thrones I saw featured Talisi (the smoking hot silver-haired babe that leads her own Mongol horde and walks around carrying 3 baby dragons) AND she had her clothes on,there is a 99 percent chance you couldn't have paid me to watch another episode.

The thing is I was already almost addicted to the show before she appeared on the scene, and like her determination and her fire BEFORE the dragons were hatched. Then she started taking her clothes off,and who can resist that?

BTW,the little girl who is maybe 11 or 12 years old that plays the princess who is separated from her family behind enemy lines and pretending to be a boy is a actress to keep your eyes on. She is an amazingly talented actress already,so just imagine how good she is going to be by the time she is an adult.

Everybody in that show seems to be good enough to be a lead actor or actress in any movie made, but she really stands out.

I'm really hoping they keep most of that fantasy "magic" waaay in the background, though. Yeah,I like a smoking hot babe that is bold enough to lead a Mongol horde and has 3 baby dragons that she WILL have light your ass up if you piss her off,but not one step further.

Not really comfortable with the hints the one pre-teen prince that is crippled is going to morph into a Dire Wolf, either. The writing and acting on that show is good enough I will probably be able to tolerate it when it happens, but I still won't like it.

If I liked mystical fiction,I'd go to church.

Well,at least the characters aren't the one-dimensional characters of reality tv.

That right there makes it more interesting that over half of what's on tv now.

BTW,make sure you watch Shameless,Fred. BOTH the UK and the American versions. I've been watching both, and IMHO the American version is funnier. William Macey deserves awards for his role that haven't even been thought up yet. It's hilarious.

Here is the promo clip from season one of the American version.

BTW,if you don't have a sat dish or cable, there are dozens of places you can watch full seasons on your computer for free. Showtime produces the show,so their web page would be one place to watch the for free. You just have to watch the commercials like you would regular tv.

Fred,if you have watched the clip I posted a few minutes ago and think Frank Gallagher is charming, you ain't met his mother yet. I ain't saying she's bad,but after getting out of prison early after convincing them she was dying, she decides Franks 9 year old son is too old to not have his own scam going,so she sets up a meth lab in the basement (which is what she was in prison for) and teaches him how to cook meth.
