Where I live most of us use heat pumps for both types of seasons - hot and cold. I think that would likely be what you need. To: sneakypete (#7) A heat pump will not draw heat out of the air when it gets below freezing outside. Then it uses electric heating elements, same as electric heat. When I got mine, the thermostat had an extra switch to enable the eletric heating elements. When I forgot to turn that on, the house stayed cold.
