si 300x200 Generators Pumping Media Tents As NYC Marathon To Take Place Despite Thousands Still Without Food, Water, Or Shelter

Staten Island after Hurricane Sandy, where the marathon is set to kick off on Sunday.

New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg says that on Sunday, the annual NYC marathon will take place despite the continuing devastation brought by Hurricane Sandy to the tri-state area. He says it shows that New Yorkers continue to move forward and rebuild and this iconic event is no better way to do that.

Had it been weeks since the natural disaster and if (big, huge if) every victim had food, shelter and assistance, he might have a point. But right now when body recovery is still taking place and thousands are stranded with their families without basic necessities, it seems like their basic needs and suffering are being dismissed.

On top of that, it was reported today that two massive generators are now set up in Central Park to fuel the media tents! Media tents… when thousands of children and families are without any power for days, freezing, starving and homeless.

In addition, the race is set to begin where it always does: in Staten Island, a borough where mass body recovery is still going on today. It has also been reported that hurricane victims who have been housed up in hotels are now being thrown out for the marathon runners who are arriving in the city.

It is one thing to be positive and optimistic, but it is another to dismiss those who are in distress. On the other hand, perhaps the marathon might bring much needed money to the city but, like financial expert Suze Orman says, people first, then money.

Here’s how Bloomberg sums it up:

“It’s a great event for New York and for those who were lost, you have to believe they would want the economy and city to go forward for those left behind.”

When children and families have no food or clothing or shelter while thousands others have no power, heat or hot water, we need all our resources focused on recovery and assistance. We need every available police officer and National Guard member to restore order to the areas that have looting and robbing. Some neighborhoods are nothing short of chaos. Hospitals are still evacuated and thousands must get to hospitals to receive vaccinations from swallowing contaminated water. In many cases, there are simply no houses left to access; they were either washed away, crushed or burned down.

People are in critical condition physically and mentally, and every effort of our police and law enforcement needs to be reserved for these people – not marathon runners.

You know damn well they are still gonna have the marathon, he's not going to give up the chance to skimm millions of dollars off the top of what the marathon will bring to the city... Oh well the people of NYC get what they deserve they are the ones who voted for his ass!!!

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York City Marathon was canceled Friday by Mayor Michael Bloomberg after mounting criticism that it was wrong to hold the race while the region is still recovering from Superstorm Sandy.

With people in storm-ravaged areas still shivering without electricity and the death toll in New York City at more than 40, many residents recoiled at the prospect of police officers being assigned to protect Sunday's race.

An estimated 40,000 runners from around the world had been expected to take part in the 26.2-mile event. The race had been scheduled to start in Staten Island, one of the hardest-hit areas by this week's storm.

A few hours after Bloomberg insisted the race would be held, he reversed himself when top city officials lined up against him.

"We would not want a cloud to hang over the race or its participants, and so we have decided to cancel it," the mayor said in a statement. "We cannot allow a controversy over an athletic event — even one as meaningful as this — to distract attention away from all the critically important work that is being done to recover from the storm and get our city back on track."

The nationally televised race that winds through the city's five boroughs and ends in Central Park has been held annually since 1970 — it was held in 2001, about two months after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The cancellation means there won't be another NYC Marathon until next year.

Bloomberg called the marathon an "integral part of New York City's life for 40 years" and "an event tens of thousands of New Yorkers participate in and millions more watch."

He still insisted that holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort, but understood the level of friction.

"It is clear it that it has become the source of controversy and division," Bloomberg said. "The marathon has always brought our city together and inspired us with stories of courage and determination."

Mary Wittenberg, president of the organizing New York Road Runners, said it was the right move.

"It's clear today the best thing for New York and the best thing for the marathon for the future is unfortunately to move on, and this isn't the year or the time to run it," she said in a statement.

"It's crushing and it's really difficult. It's one of the toughest decisions we ever made, but we really believe it's the right thing for New York," she said.

I truthfully find that hard to believe that he would give up the opportunity to pad his personal bank accounts... Maybe they threatened to tie him to a chair and have the Gay Canary Posse accuse him of being a Paultard for a couple of days!!
