politics and politicians Title: Conservative Mega-Donor Sheldon Adelson Lobbies Romney To Free U.S.-Held Israeli Spy Jonathan Pollard Conservative mega-donor Sheldon Adelson recently pressed presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to call for the release of Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard, unnamed sources close to the two men reportedly told Daily Beast reporters Eli Lake and Dan Ephron. The report comes just days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Romney in Jerusalem and reportedly raised the subject at a dinner and presented the former Massachusetts governor with a petition for Pollard’s release. President Barack Obama’s administration has, like prior administrations both Democrat and Republican, consistently refused to release Pollard, who was first detained in 1985 while in possession of classified information, then sentenced to life in prison in 1987 for passing secrets to Israel’s intelligence services. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1331163101011-9'); }); For Adelson to push Romney on Pollard’s case lends a new weight to Israel’s continued overtures to have the former spy’s life sentence commuted, being that Adelson claims he’s prepared to spend up to $100 million to defeat President Obama. Adelson formerly supported former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA), who said just last December that his “bias is towards clemency” for Pollard. Gingrich’s remarks came just over one month before an Adelson-funded super PAC delivered one of the most devastating blows of the Republican primaries: a 30 minute anti-Romney ad that hit the frontrunner’s business record at Bain Capital with some of the same lines of attack President Obama is using today. While Romney hasn’t said whether he’d commute Pollard’s sentence, Lake and Ephron noted that he did say last December, speaking at the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations, that he would “review the facts” once elected president. Adelson, whose net worth reportedly exceeds more than $25 billion, is currently facing a U.S. Department of Justice investigation into his Las Vegas Sands Corporation after internal documents revealed that Adelson told executives to pay more than $700,000 in legal fees to an official in the notoriously corrupt Chinese region of Macau to facilitate construction of his casinos. Macau police said Monday that a series of raids targeting organized crime syndicates operating within the casinos, including those run by Adelson’s company, resulted in over 1,300 interrogations and more than 150 arrests. #2. To: Brian S, Fred Mertz, *Yukon neo-Progressive Vermin* (#0) (Edited) LDS Mormon Temple Oath of Vengeance Mitt's Mormon Militia & LDS Nauvoo Legion, under the command of General Glen Beck will break him out of jail. Mormons have sworn vengeance against the US, and like anonymous... they don't forgive, they don't forget - expect us! They're still angry about losing their harems. The president took the advice of a few advisers and determined that Utah Territory was in rebellion against federal power. He based his decision on allegations that judicial records had been burned and on the treatment of officials in general. For example, Almond Babbitt, secretary of state of Utah, was murdered in 1856 by ruffians, not on Brigham Young’s orders as often cited. Allegations of interference of Latter-day Saints with U.S. mail were perceived as another assault on governmental power.
On July 24, 1857, ten years to the day after Brigham Young entered the valley, thousands of Saints were in the mountains celebrating the anniversary when riders brought word that a military force was en route to Utah. For the next few weeks, Young and his advisers discussed the meaning of the government’s actions without any word from national officials.[19] Soon it became obvious that stringent policies were needed to safeguard the settlements and the Saints’ property and lives. Food, a bartering commodity with immigrant trains, was restricted for sale to Church members only. Full reorganization of the Utah militia, the Nauvoo Legion, continued an effort that actually began months earlier. Weapons and gunpowder were stockpiled. In order to arm the legion, revolvers and other firearms were produced locally, some even on Temple Square itself. At its height, the Nauvoo Legion could field and equip only a fraction of the four thousand men on the muster rolls. Organized into military divisions, normally by county, the legion was commanded by General Daniel Wells, a member of the First Presidency. General Wells was an accomplished leader, businessman, and Church officer, but he had no military experience beyond militia service. The legion’s only real military experience belonged to a few hundred members who had served ten years earlier in the Mormon Battalion, which never engaged in combat. With inexperienced leadership in training and combat operations, a limited number of firearms, no useful artillery, inadequate equipment, and little time to train and prepare, the Latter-day Saint military force faced a daunting challenge. The only advantages they had were their knowledge of the terrain, a strong base of logistical operations, and their local populace. The only logical course of action for the Saints was to conduct a guerilla campaign, as opposed to direct conventional combat, and to use the land, weather, and stealth in their favor. Other actions taken as the conflict continued included recalling missionaries from abroad and closing remote and far-flung settlements. At the same time, food, equipment, fodder for animals, and all valuable stores were safeguarded for family and community needs. Fortunately, during this time two important events increased the Saints’ chances of survival. First, they started an all-out campaign to encourage local Native American tribes to ally themselves with the Mormons against “Gentiles,” whose treatment of the tribes was worse than the more benign treatment by Mormons. Secondly, senior leaders traveled among the settlements giving intense and emotional speeches to boost morale and prepare the Saints for the most dire possibilities.[20] Out in the field, Church leaders preached and exhorted their fellow Saints to prepare for any contingency, especially war against the United States.[21] From Salt Lake City in the Old Tabernacle and other locations, Apostles chastised those who wavered in the faith. Young’s close friend and counselor President Heber C. Kimball explained the moral authority that the prophet carried: “Our Father and our God has sent Brigham and his brethren; if you rebel against them, you rebel against the authority that sent them.”[22] Such pronouncements clarified for the Saints to whom they should look for direction during the tumultuous months ahead. http://rsc.byu.edu/archived/nineteenth-century-saints-war/3-church-and-utah-war-1857%E2%80%9358
Obama's watch stopped on 24 May 2008, but he's been too busy smoking crack to notice. #3. To: hondo68 (#2) Have you ever considered writing screen plays? You come up with some far out story lines...
#4. To: Brian S (#0) I don't have a problem with any president reviewing Pollard's case. I will have a problem with any that thinks he should be released. It was Americans blood, sweat, and tears that this treasonous bastard gae away, not Israelis. Their petition shouldn't hold up beyond a cursory 'its under review'. It wouldn't be beyond the big 'O' to pardon him before the election to try to garner the Jewish vote....that would make Mitt obsolete for their cause, and it would rub Adelson's nose in it for not supporting him--let him waste his money on a mute point!
#5. To: rowdee (#4) (Edited) the big 'O' to pardon him before the election to try to garner the Jewish vote.... He might gain a few Jewish votes but he'll lose a lot more from the hard left who love the Palestinians and "democratic rebels" of Arab Spring. He'll also lose some votes from moderates and conservatives who don't give a damn about either, but are more America first! It might make sense if you're looking at an electoral vote map, but the backlash against it would be hard to predict, IMO. It would likely lower the voter turnout overall, or result in higher third party numbers. Zionism and neocons are declining in popularity, and headed for the ash heap of history.
Obama's watch stopped on 24 May 2008, but he's been too busy smoking crack to notice. #6. To: hondo68 (#5) I'm basically thinking NY and Cali and Florida, as locales for Jews. He will probably get NY and Cali, with Florida doable. Note that NY and Cali area heavy liberal leaning states with many electoral votes. There are lots of blacks and hispanics (beyond Cubans, of course) in Florida.....they are not going to turn their backs on him for all the freebee promises they think are coming their way.
