J.C. Penney Floundering After Endorsing Gay Marriage

posted on July 20, 2012 by Giacomo

Have you ever heard of Kemmerer, Wyoming? It is the county seat of Lincoln County and according to the 2010 Census has a population of 2,656.

On April 14, 1902, three businessmen partnered and opened a retail store called The Golden Rule. In the next few years, they opened two more stores in the area, but in 1907, two of the partners, Thomas Callahan and Guy Johnson dissolved their partnership. The remaining partner, James Cash Penney managed to purchase full interest in all three stores and took control from there. In 1909, he moved his headquarters to Salt Lake City, Utah and by 1912 he had a grand total of 34 stores located throughout the Rocky Mountain states. In 1913, James Cash Penney placed all of his stores under the name of J.C. Penney and the rest is history.

The Great Depression hit Penney hard and he nearly lost everything he had. In an effort to salvage his retail company, he borrowed on his life insurance policies in order to meet payroll. The stress of the Great Depression and the financial burden it placed on Penney took its toll on his health and he ended up admitting himself into Battle Creek Sanitarium for treatment.

While at the sanitarium, it is reported that Penney heard the hymn God Will Take Care of You being sung in the sanitarium chapel. He was so moved by the hymn that he gave his life to Christ and became a born-again Christian.

This makes me wonder if Penney was alive today (he died in 1971 at the age of 95), would he have approved of the company’s decision to endorse homosexuality and bring famed lesbian Ellen DeGeneres to be the new company spokesperson? In February of this year, that is exactly what J.C. Penney did. Just prior to Father’s Day, J.C. Penney launched an ad campaign promoting gay fathers.

When the company announced their gay activist plans in February, their stock sold for $41.32 a share. Groups like the American Family Association and One Million Moms took to the Internet to lead an effort to boycott the company and hopefully make them change their policy or regret having done so. As of the time of writing this about them, J.C. Penney’s stock had plunged to a low of $20.02. In addition to their stock dropping to less than half of what it was, Standard & Poor’s Rating Service has taken the action to lower the company’s credit ranking for the second time in two months where it is now four levels into junk territory.

American Family Association director of special projects Randy Sharp says the timing of the stock plunge just happened to coincide with the company’s two full page ads in the their catalog that features a pair of gay dads and gay moms. Sharp commented:

“A company loses money [and] they lose sales when they offend their customers — and this is exactly what’s happened with JC Penney. Moms and dads, traditional families find it offensive that JC Penney is now going into the activist mode for homosexual marriage.”

The company’s drastic downturn caused Michael Francis to resign as president of J.C. Penney after only 7 months at the helm. All indications say that Francis was responsible for the changes in the company’s marketing policies, although CEO Dan Celia may also share part of the blame as well.

James Cash Penney built an empire of retail stores and as a born-again Christian, he would never have let his company embrace something so anti-biblical as homosexuality. To coin an old expression, he probably turned over in his grave a few times since the company’s February announcement.

Until the leadership of J.C. Penney changes their current endorsement of homosexuality and gay marriage, I urge everyone to continue to avoid giving them your business. There are plenty of other businesses out there that honor traditional families and family values that would greatly benefit from your dollars and cents. As Christians we need to make our voices heard loud and clear and our voice is saying NO to the gay agenda of J.C. Penney!

JCP is floundering because Malls are being deserted.

PEople are being turned into debt slaves and JCP/retail has priced itself out of the bottom 99%'s price range.

JCPenney has been floundering for a long time, because they lost track of their market. The same thing happened to Sears and Kmart.

This did not happen over night. It steams from their failure to adjust their market focus with changing American demographics.

Basically, Target and Wall-Mart have taken their lower middle class customers, while Macy's, Nordstrom, Saks, Lord & Taylor and others have taken their upper middle class customers.

In the 1980s, I was a dedicated JCPenny shopper. I used to buy all of my cloths there. No longer. Today I buy my jeans at the GAP; my dress shirts, casual shirts, and casual pants at L.L.Bean; my sports coats and suites at Brooks Brothers; and my shoes at Nordstrom (I have a wide foot, so I can't buy my shoes anywhere).

JCPenny at Bellevue Square Mall, close to my house, has basically been devoid of customers for 5 to 10 years. Everything is constantly on sale and they still don't have any customers. The store is always empty. I don't know how they stay in business.

I do believe Pennys has bought the final nail for the coffin lid.

When my daughters were growing up, we bought most of their clothes there. I bought a lot there for myself, as well as my husband. He really liked their white cotton tees and shorts. Their dress shirts are really nice abd their dress slacks fit him well.

I liked most of their home furnishing. In fact, the last buy in this department I did online for a large patio door style one way pull drape for my home now.

When I saw this latest ad gig was when I decided they made a choice to support perversion; and I'm making a choice not to support them OR perversion.

In the 1980s, I was a dedicated JCPenny shopper.

I've never been a Penneys shopper, in fact I can't even remember the last time I was even in the store much less bought something there.... I've always found whatever I've wanted someplace else like Cabela's, Base Exchange, Bass Pro Shops, Dick's Sporting Goods, Tractor Supply, Wal Mart and Target....

Another one I can't see how they stay in business is K Mart???

General Mills cereal company adopts 'gay marriage' 'This will go down as one of the dumbest corporate PR stunts of all time'

The Minnesota food giant that brought to the nation’s parents, and especially their children, the Honey Nut Bee, Lucky the Leprechaun and the Silly Trix Rabbit now publicly is supporting homosexual marriage, leaving critics surprised at General Mills’ abandonment of traditional values families.

General Mills CEO Ken Peters announced this week at a Minneapolis homosexual pride event that his company opposes the marriage amendment on the Minnesota ballot in November.

Same-sex marriage is already illegal in Minnesota, but supporters of the traditional marriage initiative say that the constitutional amendment would keep marriage safe from activist courts and even legislators who may attempt to usurp state law.

Already there is a case in Hennepin County effectively putting the Minnesota Defense of Marriage Act on trial, and Minnesota pro-traditional marriage groups say that the November ballot measure is critical.

Supporters of traditional marriage say that General Mills couldn’t be more wrong in calling its support a business decision, but that is precisely how General Mills is voicing its opposition to the idea that state residents could define marriage for themselves.

“General Mills doesn’t normally take positions on ballot measures; this is a business issue that impacts our employees,” said Ken Charles, General Mills vice president of diversity.

“Minnesota voters will be asked to decide on a proposed constitutional amendment in November,” said Charles. “If passed, this amendment would define marriage in our home state’s constitution as being between one man and one woman, effectively banning same-sex marriage in Minnesota.”

He said the General Mills position against the traditional definition of marriage would help keep the company competitive. The pro-marriage initiative, he said, would make it harder for the Minnesota food producer to retain talented workers.

“If defeated, Minnesota voters would send a strong message about our state’s view of the importance of inclusiveness and diversity,” he said.

Charles spoke of the CEO’s comments at the “gay” pride event.

“He voiced our company’s opposition to the proposed marriage amendment, an initiative that makes our state less inclusive and reduces our company’s ability to attract and retain talent,” Charles said.

“I am proud to see our company join the ranks of local and national employers speaking out for inclusion,” he continued. “We do not believe the proposed constitutional amendment is in the best interests of our employees or our state economy – and as a Minnesota-based company we oppose it.”

Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, or NOM,said the General Mills position “will go down as one of the dumbest corporate PR stunts of all time.”

“Marriage as the union of one man and one woman is profoundly in the common good, and it is especially important for children,” Brown said. “General Mills makes billions marketing cereal to parents of young children. It has now effectively declared a war on marriage with its own customers when it tells the country that it is opposed to preserving traditional marriage, which is what the Minnesota Marriage Protection Amendment does.”

NOM points out U.S. Census Bureau data indicating that there are just over 100,000 same-sex households in America with children under the age of 18. The group contrasts that with the over 35 million traditional American households with children under 18.

“It’s ludicrous for a big corporation to intentionally inject themselves into a divisive social issue like gay marriage,” said Brown. “It’s particularly dumb for a corporation that makes billions selling cereal to the very people they just opposed.”

NOM recently sent a letter to Minnesota’s 50 biggest corporations urging “neutrality” regarding the November ballot measure.

“Gay” activist groups claim that there is no such thing as neutrality, however, with one group recently blogging, “A policy of neutrality is a policy of invisibility, disregard, and shame.”

The blogger calls on companies like General Mills to embrace the LGBT community and “do what’s right for their profits.”

But Minnesotans for Marriage, a broad coalition of supporters of the Minnesota marriage amendment, sharply criticized General Mill’s outspoken opposition to traditional marriage.

In a statement, marriage coalition chairman John Helmberger said it’s “very disappointing that General Mills has decided to play PC politics by pandering to a small but powerful interest group that is bent on redefining marriage, the core institution of society.”

Thanks, Stone, I didn't see that. So General Mills is now on my *sh*t* list.

I haven't bought from GE for years over their handling of a problem with a coffee pot. I cancelled a subscription of many years to Readers Digest for a ridiculously inaccurate story which they refused to retract or even have an 'opposition' story on. I don't even bother with them at the doctors office!

I get burned; I refuse to patronize.

Kmart is pretty much out of business in big sections of the country. Not sure how they are hanging on elsewhere.

Sears is only in business because of their tools, lawn mowers and appliances. Who buys cloths at Sears? No one. They go to Target.

They are supposedly doing well in my part of the country but I don't see how.. I never see more than 20-30 cars in the parking lot when I drive by, and how many of those are employee vehicles.....

My guess is since they bought Sears awhile back they are siphoning off some of their profits to help keep some of the K Mart stores open.... Ever since Wal Marts opened around here I quit going to K Marts, better/cleaner stores, better selection, better service and better prices.....

Truthfully I don't think it will be too much longer before they go the way of Kresges and Grants, out of business.....

I still go to Kmratt occasionally. Closer then Walmart.

But I went ther one day and they didn't have any latex caulk. None in the whole store.

I went there another time and they had no thumb tacks.

They should just copy walmart.
