Title: Pope appoints doctrinal watchdog with links to 'Marxist' Catholics

Gerhard Ludwig Müller, who has defended liberation theologists and written a book on the poor, will lead key department.

Pope Benedict on Monday appointed as the Roman Catholic church's doctrinal watchdog a fellow German with links to liberation theology, the interpretation of Christianity that conservatives have deplored as Marxism with a cross in place of a hammer and sickle.

Gerhard Ludwig Müller, 64, the bishop of Regensburg in Bavaria, is to take over the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the direct successor of the department created in the 16th century to manage the Inquisition.

It is generally regarded as the second most important department in the Vatican after the Secretariat of State and was for many years headed by Benedict before his election to the papacy.

The congregation's primary role is to keep a beady eye on the writings and teachings of Catholic theologians. But in recent years it has acquired responsibility for dealing with two of the most sensitive issues facing the Vatican – the scandal of clerical sex abuse, and efforts to heal the breach with breakaway ultra-conservative Roman Catholics.

As Cardinal Ratzinger, the pope spent much of his time bringing to heel Latin-American liberation theologists. The late John Paul II repeatedly accused priests inspired by liberation theology of having lost sight of their spiritual mission in their concern for poverty and human rights.

Müller is unquestionably a conservative. He was criticised by the liberal Catholic movement Wir Sind Kirche following his appointment for having considered "the enforcement of church discipline more important than changing obvious wrongs" while bishop of Regensburg. But, like Benedict, Müller has unexpected friends. He was a student of Father Gustavo Gutiérrez, the author of the seminal 1971 work, A Theology of Liberation. And only eight years ago, Müller and Gutiérrez co-authored a book entitled On the Side of the Poor.

The Vatican's new guardian of orthodoxy has on more than one occasion defended liberation theologists, arguing that their outlook is consistent with Catholic teaching. He was chosen to represent the Catholic side in ecumenical talks with the Lutherans. And he can be expected to take an uncompromising line towards the traditionalist Society of St Pius X, which Benedict is trying woo back into the fold.

In a 2009 interview, quoted by Associated Press, he was said to have recommended that the society's bishops should resign and retire "as simple priests to repair a part of the damage the schism has caused".

Müller, who has also been raised to the status of archbishop, will enter a Vatican bitterly divided and alive with intrigue. In May, the pope's butler was arrested, accused of leaking Benedict's correspondence.

95 percent of America's Lutherans: the heads of the Lutheran Church in America, the American Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod have been making nice with the Pope and yet the Pope and the Roman Catholic doctrines have not changed concerning the "schism".

It is very difficult to be among the 5% of Lutherans who still know that that the Roman Catholic Church and it's Pope is the Anti-Christ the Bible talks of.

Read this to see where we 5% stand. We have not changed, but the liberals among us have turned their back on what Lutheran is:

Lutheran-Catholic Theologians Issue Statement on Papal Infallibility

"The ultimate trust of Christians is in Christ and the gospel, not in the doctrine of infallibility, whether of scripture, the church, or the pope." That misleading statement is the main conclusion of a 9,000-word document on papal infallibility published after four and one-half years of dialog on the subject by representatives of the USA National Committee of the Lutheran World Federation and the US Bishops' Committee for Ecumenical Affairs.

Wire services and religious publications have cited the document and its conclusions as evidence that Lutherans and Catholics are drawing closer together. The document itself encourages such a conclusion. While it candidly acknowledges that differences on the infallibility issue remain unresolved, yet the document states that these differences "need not, of themselves, preclude a closer union than now exists between the two churches."

The basis for what the document terms a "convergence of views" is the attempt to relate Lutheran teaching about the indefectability of the church (i e., the believer's trust that God will keep the communion of saints in the truth of the Gospel until Judgment Day) to Catholic teaching about the infallibility of the Roman Church and its head, the pope.

The problem with that attempt to suggest a similarity between the two teachings lies in the fact that Lutherans apply the term indefectability to the invisible "Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints," while Catholics apply the term infallibility to the visible church of Rome and to its papal seat.

The next topic for study in the dialog sessions will be the doctrine of justification. Participants in the sessions have never explained the reasons for proceeding to new topics when unresolved issues remain in the areas already discussed.

Perhaps the answer lies in the position of the Lutheran participants who advocate degrees of fellowship consistent with the degree of agreement that has already been achieved. A little disagreement allows for more than a big disagreement. And apparently, according to them, the difference between indefectability and infallibility is only a little one.

Lutheran participants in the ongoing dialog bear the name Lutheran, but they do not represent genuine Lutheranism. They dilute it. If the LutheranCatholic gap is indeed closing, as a vice-president of the American Lutheran Church said recently in Milwaukee that it is, it's not because Rome is moving closer to Wittenberg.

So compromise is a one way street and that street is owned by Rome. I wish they (Rome) would be better negotiators with the Quran kissers as well.

Read this to see where we 5% stand. We have not changed, but the liberals among us have turned their back on what Lutheran is...

Your 5% stands firm I see. I have been reading some of Charles Spurgeon's sermons lately. I think this quote captures the 5% you discuss:

"So far they are honest men; and in England, where else, let them never lack a full toleration. Let us oppose their teaching by all Scriptural and intelligent means, but let us respect their courage in plainly giving us their views. I hate their doctrine, but I love their honesty; and as they speak but what they believe to be true, let them speak it out, and the more clearly the better. Out with it, sirs, be it what it may, but do let us know what you mean. For my part, I love to stand foot to foot with an honest foeman. To open warfare, bold and true hearts raise no objection but the ground of quarrel; it is covert enmity which we have most cause to fear, and best reason to loathe. That crafty kindness which inveigles me to sacrifice principle is the serpent in the grass— deadly to the incautious wayfarer. Where union and friendship are not cemented by truth, they are an unhallowed confederacy. It is time that there should be an end put to the flirtations of honest men with those who believe one way and swear another."---Charles Spurgeon
