Title: Richard Dawkins: "I can't be sure God does not exist" (most famous atheist in the world blinks)

He is regarded as the most famous atheist in the world but last night Professor Richard Dawkins admitted he could not be sure that God does not exist.

He told the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, that he preferred to call himself an agnostic rather than an atheist.

The two men were taking part in a public “dialogue” at Oxford University at the end of a week which has seen bitter debate about the role of religion in public life in Britain.

Last week Baroness Warsi, the Tory party chairman, warned of a tide of “militant secularism” challenging the religious foundations of British society.

The discussion, in Sir Christopher Wren’s Sheldonian Theatre, attracted attention from around the world.

As well as being relayed to two other theatres, it was streamed live on the internet and promoted fierce debate on the Twitter social network.

For an hour and 20 minutes the two men politely discussed "The nature of human beings and the question of their ultimate origin" touching on the meaning of consciousness, the evolution of human language – and Dr Williams’s beard.

For much of the discussion the Archbishop sat quietly listening to Prof Dawkins’s explanations of human evolution.

At one point he told the professor that he was “inspired” by “elegance” of the professor’s explanation for the origins of life – and agreed with much of it.

Prof Dawkins told him: “What I can’t understand is why you can’t see the extraordinary beauty of the idea that life started from nothing – that is such a staggering, elegant, beautiful thing, why would you want to clutter it up with something so messy as a God?”

Dr Williams replied that he “entirely agreed” with the “beauty” of Prof Dawkins’s argument but added: “I’m not talking about God as an extra who you shoehorn on to that.”

There was surprise when Prof Dawkins acknowledged that he was less than 100 per cent certain of his conviction that there is no creator.

The philosopher Sir Anthony Kenny, who chaired the discussion, interjected: “Why don’t you call yourself an agnostic?” Prof Dawkins answered that he did.

An incredulous Sir Anthony replied: “You are described as the world’s most famous atheist.”

Prof Dawkins said that he was “6.9 out of seven” sure of his beliefs.

“I think the probability of a supernatural creator existing is very very low,” he added.

He also said that he believed it was highly likely that there was life on other planets.

At one point he discussion strayed onto the theoretical question of whether a traditional cut throat razor could be described as a more complicated thing than an electric shaver.

There was laughter as the Archbishop said he would attempt an answer before adding: “Not that I know much about razors.”

During a wide-ranging discussion the Archbishop also said that he believed that human beings had evolved from non-human ancestors but were nevertheless “in the image of God”.

He also said that the explanation for the creation of the world in the Book of Genesis could not be taken literally.

“The writers of the Bible, inspired as I believe they were, they were nonetheless not inspired to do 21st Century physics,” he said.

When Prof Dawkins suggested that he believed the Pope took a rather more literal interpretation of the origins of humans, the Archbishop joked: “I will ask him some time.”

Amidst the observation that Prof. Dawkins' was “inspired” by “elegance” of the professor’s explanation for the origins of life, and agreed with much of it, we have THIS inanity by Dawkins:

“What I can’t understand is why you can’t see the extraordinary beauty of the idea that life started from nothing – that is such a staggering, elegant, beautiful thing, why would you want to clutter it up with something so messy as a God?”

No, we CAN'T see it, Professor Dummy. What is more staggering than a supposed respected, top "intellectual" of our time - Richard Dawkins....

1) Concluding Life was created out of nothing

2) Opining that a God or "Creator" "cutters" and "messes up" his Fantasy of "something-made-out-of-nothing". (Of course believing otherwise would also mean there's a Creator whose judgment looms)

3) Expecting the rest of us to intellectually "understand" and accept the Impossible: "Something-created-out-of-nothing" - especially a mind and consciousness - the NON-physical

Does.

NOT.

Compute.

Not that the inanity was all Dawkins...

The "Man of the Cloth" - Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, also said that the explanation for the creation of the world in the Book of Genesis could not be taken literally. HIS own Fairy Tale belief was that he believed that human beings had evolved from non-human ancestors (aka Extra-Terrestrials), but were nevertheless “in the image of God”.

Why then bother believing ANY of the Bible, Archbishop? I mean after all - Jesus Christ HIMSELF used to quote the Old Testament. Are you calling HIM a Liar?

This public “dialogue” at Oxford - one of the main symbolic "intellectual" centers of the world - was an exercise in the blind leading the blind-er.

Hilarious. Ha-ha!!! Somebody get me a tissue I'm laughing so much I'm crying...

Yeah, let's all have a BIG belly-laugh at the thought of an atheist/agnostic asking an Archbishop who believes *his* God sent ET's to impregnate earth...asking a Pope who supports the Koran and believes the Old Testament is a Lie, HIS opinion of Genesis.

Where was the Baptist representation to challenge the Archbishop?

Now THAT addition would have made for quite a symposium.

Apparently Rowan Williams doesn't believe all the Bible.....his stance on homosexuals serving as ministers certainly isn't biblically based.

Somebody please tell me - WHY is Dawkins considered a "great intellectual"??

Why doesn't he explain the chances of "Something-created-out-of-Nothing".

Those mathematical odds would be ZERO, pal.

Yeah, the atheists seem to find their "credible" opposition from the ranks of liberal "theologians."

This makes their job a lot easier.

Just wanted you to know TC no longer posts here. He confirmed this to me last week on LP. If the disturbing thread titles and language continues, I might have to go that way as well. LF is linked to Google, which archives stuff for their masters. If I get black listed for discussing and proclaiming the Word, so be it. But do not want to be dragged down as associated with potty talk, which is getting a bit heated here as of late.

Yup. Kinda like helping "catapulting the propaganda" (to use Dubya's words). The Devil is pleased with this kind of symposium where "our" side is represented by an un-Bible believing satanic agent of the Vatican. BIG surprise, right?

I've noticed and thoroughly understand.

A K A Stone, aka a "Christian" doesn't seen to understand these kind of things about titles.

FWIW, Liberty Post frankly isn't much better at times, while vulgar "potty talk" and poisoning of that well remains business as usual there primarily because of two posters.

Good catch on the signs of the times. From Isaiah chapter 5:

Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, And prudent in their own sight!

22 Woe to men mighty at drinking wine, Woe to men valiant for mixing intoxicating drink, 23 Who justify the wicked for a bribe, And take away justice from the righteous man!

I think it can be fun, interesting, and educational, and probably a goodly number of other things. We can find people we can draw on their experiences from, or their education or ocupational backgrounds, etc.

I remember the early days at Free Republic when articles were found and dissected from one end to the other......that was great--we could learn how to read between the lines, detect spin, and the like.

I remember lots of vanity threads that were really meat and potato threads-- talks about liberty, justice, history, and the like. Back then, it even meant something to Jim Rob besides a gravy train. He could write a good commentary. Names like Jeff Head, OKW, Dawg, Don (was it Miller from northern Idaho), Askel5, And there was a fiesty gal--her name is on te tip of my tongue and I can't remember it at the moment. Aha! Mercuria!!!! Remember her, buck?

When i first got on the internet in '98, I would just sit and read all these people would write. I couldn't believe I had found people that felt the way I did about my country.

And what was neat--they didn't resort to gutter talk or potty mouths, they weren't into name calling or labeling as is done nowadays.

Thats what I consider fun.

I don't care who can scream 'dung' (shit to those in Rio Vista) the loudest from the top of the Eiffel Tower. That is just a childish stunt. Meant to draw attention. Meant to 'prove' someone's manhood or womanhood, I suppose.

I speak from having been on that side of the bar. My 3-year hiatus hopefully showed me I don't need that to make a point. It also has shown me I don't need that in my life.

Yup, agree 100%; Up is down, evil is good, and insanity is sanity. But mostly thou shalt remember thy First Commandment of our secular humanist Fascist/Commie State Religion: "Gay is "good"! ALL with the help of promoting moral relativism. Also remember: Justice Roberts is merely one of FIVE justices voting and lying about the legitimacy of 0bumaCare.

Thus, if nothing is wrong...except being right, what have we? Moral anarchy. Sponsored by the The Prez. The SCOTUS. Congress. The entire goob. Yet some wonder how and why the underpinnings of our nation are crumbling before our very eyes? You've no doubt noticed we no longer live in a "Representative Republic." Exactly what "America" is at the moment is still in-definitive but the Founders certainly wouldn't recognize it.

I remember some of those peeps...Askel5 was big on abortion, Jeff Head an articulate advocate for liberty and the Founders principles - "feisty gals"? Lol, there were plenty of them. Curiously enough, the moderation was mostly "self-moderating"...and there were no "Viking Kitties" or harpies, or thread police.

There was an aire of provocative honesty and principle abound - if there is such a thing. And a focus to turn around the partisan toxicity that was two terms of Bubba Inc that not only made a mockery of this Republic, but of the office of the Presidency.

That idealism seems almost quaintly naive reflecting back then for FR as well as for the country in general. 9/11 the so-called "War on Terror", Patriot Act, and "WMD" changed all that, didn't it?

Were you there when we had Fire Talk voice chat or Pal Talk? We had a lot of good conversation into the wee hours of the morning.

I remember sitting up many nights talking with Jim Rob--that was before he sold out and went from the 'never in a million years would I vote for W, to if anyone doesn't support them they can get the hell off my site' attitude.

I remember being on the board the night he did that. Someone came on the thread I was on and said that JR was now supporting W...most all of us thought that was a humdinger of a rumor.....so I went to the thread where that allegedly took place and asked JR bluntly and he said yes.

I will forever and always believe that Bob J was involved in that mess...the board was never the same after that and folks started leaving. Some time before that some of the libertarians started a board, and also John Deere did Liberty _______; and then, somewhere in the mix, Goldi started hers. Lucianne Goldberg had a website and some people went there.

I finally asked him to delete my account after I had been gone for some time, as I didn't want to be considered as one of their 'members' for numerical counting/bragging.

We started a lot of projects over there, did a lot of research, and were a factor in getting some legislation/regulations killed. I really enjoyed the researching projects I was involved with. Made some neat friends.

Really? You and JR??

Well, there IS this archive that's survived:

JimRob (regarding W Bush):

“Well, by God, if you people insist on electing another cokehead as President, you damned well better throw open all the prison cell doors and free every man, woman, and child you’re holding on drug charges. And if you’re gonna elect another drug felon as President, you’d better rescind each and every one of your unconstitutional drug laws now on the books, including all of your unconstitutional search and seizure laws, and your asset forfeiture laws, and your laws that enable your unconstitutional snooping into our bank accounts and cash transactions. Well, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. You people are sick! Conservatives my ass. You people are nothing but a bunch of non-thinking hypocrits! You’re a shame and a disgrace to the Republic! And, I, for one, am tired of taking orders from cokeheads and felons! Elect another one and I’ll tell you what. I’ll be ready for war! It’ll be time to take up arms and run the filthy lying bastards out!”

You mean after JR suddenly turned around on a dime, you bailed? COMPLETELY? It was indeed a huge betrayal - how then could he be trusted after backing off completely on his word? His cred took a beating with that turnabout over Dubya, that's for sure. I wasn't posting much at the time, but noticed to upheaval and mood affectation. Of course there were the splintering into other forums. Lucy's grew large, LP became a small forum but beacon of savvy posters - a far cry from recent years.

BobJ...I can't say I even knew who he was...until his last days at FR during which he was instigating and getting banned (and also subsequent subject of a pretty funny Hitler Parody here at LP). It seemed to me by examining his post that he was...VERY moderate and NO conservative by any stretch. he could very well have influenced JR's future moderate, pro-RINO, Dubya sycophancy positions.

We started a lot of projects over there, did a lot of research, and were a factor in getting some legislation/regulations killed. I really enjoyed the researching projects I was involved with. Made some neat friends.

FR and you guys did do yeoman's work; It truly was very politically influential and made a difference. Shame about the steady devolution and what seemed to be pimping for Dubya, endorsing ALL his RINO policies. I assumed that he'd been nicely compensated by 2002, 2003.

LOL...there were a couple of times we were up talking til near 4 am! IIRC, JR had difficulty sleeping; and when he did get tired, he would sleep for a couple of hours and then get back to the forum...and I presume would pick up more sleep time during the day.

There was even a time when we had Alan Keyes and another time Pat Buchanan and I even think yet another the libertarian candidate online with us to answer questions.

I was a widow and my body's internal clock set my time schedule for me.

The quote you selected really did express how Jim Rob felt back then. And he was adamant. He and Bob J clashed a lot. As I recall, there were money issues. Further, I think Bob J had at least one pizza parlor, but more like several.

FR tried to establish a radio station over the internet, and Bob J was all over that. Some how he managed to hook up (I think thru CPAC--FR used to have representation there) with someone in DC to 'help' in broadening FR's reach. I want to say there was a female lawyer from there helping Bob J.

And then suddenly, I think either just before or immediately after the convention, Jim Rob had a complete turn around and was supporting W. I want to say that sometime along in here, I believe, suddenly the legal problems were taken care of. Its been so long now, and it was never really important to me, but I think it was in this general time frame that he started the Freepathons. I know earlier on, people would just send in some money occassionally.

I know for a fact that Bob J wanted his finger in everything FR's members were doing. I was with a group that set up Operation America, established to look thru legislation for things to either support or fight. "Know Your Customer" was one of our big issues--bad banking regulations. The regulators received gthe most negative correspondence they had ever received (over 155,000 pierces of corespondence)on an issue over this proposed KYC mess. We had located newspaoers in every state for Letters to the Editors and someone to write to the Editors!

Bob J suddenly wanted to be copied with all the agenda of this group, meeting notices, bylaws of the group, copies of our drafts, etc. Looking back--amazing what hindsight can do--I can see clearly what he was up to.

Another project I really liked was when a group of us tackled the issue of why Clinton decided to start bombing Serbia--think OIL; you wouldn't believe alll the stuff we came up with.

Do you remember how inept the Perfumed Prince, General Wesley Clark, was? We were bombing plywood tank cutouts and the like while he was declaring the number of known 'tank,

Oh well.......yes, there were wonderful times back then.

And Alamogirl's famous Downside Legacy storage of White Water documents and articles, CFR, TC, and the like.

We even had a list of occupations that various posters has--that was a great help when you needed a 'go to' source.

Those glory days are long gone.

And the SOB even had the brass to make a run for the White House, and the Dims took him seriously. He actually came close to having a shot at it. I even remember a lot of idiots on FR supporting him because he was a "military man" and a general

I think it can be fun, interesting, and educational, and probably a goodly number of other things. We can find people we can draw on their experiences from, or their education or ocupational backgrounds, etc.

This is exactly the attitude that makes you an important poster. Most of those have always known your down-to-earth posts that are not just well-researched from a personal perspective but also from a politically conservative perspective but well intended, as well. You have a speakers voice, just like the one I'm responding towards.

I remember the early days at Free Republic when articles were found and dissected from one end to the other......that was great--we could learn how to read between the lines, detect spin, and the like.

There is something about a person's post (no matter who that person may be) that permits a glimpse of the "dark-side." Most people are repulsed or don't care and quickly move towards other posts worthy of their time.

Then again, I have seen some fairely awesome posts from the most despicable cretins on the Internet. What is the most problematic issue for most folks is how to deal with a post that maybe trickled from a single-celled amoeba or multidimensional wizard that actually says something valuable. It is difficult to judge for newbies and our best. We are all frail towards methods of posting not typically accurately applied to normalcy.

Of course; it is hard to believe that Mercuria and I went shooting with some major gun clubs. Some of the folks that you bring up are still posting all over the Internet.

When i first got on the internet in '98, I would just sit and read all these people would write. I couldn't believe I had found people that felt the way I did about my country.

For many, they catch a ray of light and watch. I still perform the same way depending on timing and posters and Internet channels.

And what was neat--they didn't resort to gutter talk or potty mouths, they weren't into name calling or labeling as is done nowadays.

Some of the emails have been otherwise. I blow the stuff off, too

Thats what I consider fun.

Now, we are talking BIG_TIME!

I don't care who can scream 'dung' (shit to those in Rio Vista) the loudest from the top of the Eiffel Tower. That is just a childish stunt. Meant to draw attention. Meant to 'prove' someone's manhood or womanhood, I suppose.

I do. I despise posters that condemn others with a single idea and run from thread to thread in order to PROVE a point that is NOT applicable to new ideas. Most posters are not, let me repeat ... single issue posters. We have an idea that is important to discuss is all.

I speak from having been on that side of the bar. My 3-year hiatus hopefully showed me I don't need that to make a point. It also has shown me I don't need that in my life.

Experience, you know what it means. There are many others akin to you, too. Some just don't let the cat out of the bag, either.

Best regards,
buckeroo

I and several others would likely move over here if things get cleaned up.

I have been around many years, and if the site operator doesn't want it cleaned up it will never happen.

I didn't know that.....but its wonderful news. The first named seems hellbent on disrupting/destroying every thread, or virtually every thread, at TOS2. It is a shame that GL doesn't see it; or if she does and only ignores it, the shame is on her personally.

I told a friend a couple of days ago that I had started posting here a little bit and the friend said something like, "I won't go there--its a complete dud". That definitely is not what I wanted to hear. I had hoped this person, who is very articulate and very intelligent, would ask a bit about it and then for the web site addy.

Obiously our task, of generating more readership or participants, is going to be a lot harder than just saying, 'come on over'.

This entire LF channel humiliated those two + their self-proclaimed admiral, known as the "goat herder." There was no need for stone to interfere over the EPIC FAILURE. He likes that crew, too.

"Stone often falls off roof tops and that is when Moderator X (Stone's wife) comes to the rescue."

rowdee, to this day, I do not know who this moderator x person is, stone hasn't said much about him/her, but to listen to buck talk, he wants you to think it's him. Anyway!

As far as I know, stone was working on his roof, and made the stupid mistake of mentioning here at LF of falling off his roof, but instead of kind words, or any sort of compassion from his members, he was laughed at and ridiculed, and has been since then, with buck being the worst of the lot. This would be the last place I'd post of being sick, injured, or a tragidy that happened in my family and expect kindness.

We don't have to go far from LF to find 'man's inhumanity to man', sometimes you can cut the cruelty here with a knife, it's thick with it. He has no place to trash anyone elses website, unless he's actually active in helping to clean up the one he's posting at. jmho!

Kind of like trying to get folks to come back to KC Royals games or NY Mets games:)
