Title: Photographs of East Germany Locations Captured Decades Apart

Photographer Stefan Koppelkamm first photographed East Germany in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall but before the reunification. He revisited the same locations a decade later, and rephotographed them from exactly the same viewpoints to document the drastic social and economic transformations that came about during the time between the photos.

The project is called Ortszeit Local Time. Spielgel Online has an interesting article about the work.

EVEN F' ing gibbering slack jawed mouth breathing libTURD whores/TOOLS/FOOLS can NOT argue with what these photos say about TWO different ways of gooberment.

But, of course, they will.

They'll attack the photographer, or the web site, or me, or something.

Because libTURDS will do ANYTHING but admit the TRUTH about their culture of DEATH and TYRANNY with a HAPPY FACE :) !

ANYTHING.

F' em ALL!

Spoiled, stupid and ignorant, brain dead phuckwads, libTURD fools, tools, and idiots, are the real sickness; the messiah "king" obammy and his regime are only the symptoms.

Actually Steve, I lived in Berlin during the early 1960s and saw what a travesty the wall and the partitioning of Germany was.

These photos make me happy that the reunification of Germany has been a good thing and a success.

I want to go back there sometime and see this country again, visiting Berlin and bavaria where I also lived.

I understand why you, living in Alaska, think all good and plenty flows from government action but out here in the real world when a building gets fixed up it's the owner who did it. Hard to believe for you, I'm sure, used to surviving off government largese (or however that's spelled).

Why don't you go hook up with yukon and swap gay porn links.

Faggot.

When Koppelkamm was once again standing on a street in Görlitz in September 2001, a man told him: "You can move into a new apartment every week here. They're all empty." His words sounded bitter. The buildings had been renovated, but just like in 1990, the photographer was once again almost completely alone on the street. Many locals had left Görlitz in search of work. This time, they left for good.

Such progress, lol.

They were probably rebuilt with government grants, lol.

Idiot! Too bad you only look at pictures, you should've learned to read, lol

I remember the first time I went to Berlin.

It was 1981. I was in the Air Force.

The pilot announced that we were entering Berlin, prepare for landing.

I looked out the window. I was absolutely shocked. An old, barron city. No cars, no pedestrians, no nothing. I didn't quit get it.

Then we flew over the Wall and we saw this magnificent, bustling city.

The contrast was indescribable.

I went to Berlin several times in the 1980s and 1990s.

I was last in Berlin in 2000. East Berlin became the hip part of the city, because rents were cheap in the old, bland communist buildings, so young artists, entrepreneurs, and others set up shop there. The buildings were no longer painted grey. The made up for architectural style by painting the buildings, bright, bold colors.

The transformation that took place between 1989 and 2000 was truly amazing.

No.

What has been a success is the end of communism / state socialism.

Not just in Germany, but all over Eastern Europe, Russia, China, Cambodia, Vietnam, several Latin American countries and elsewhere.

But you leftists just can't seem to face reality.

You sound like you are answering yourself, because this post is generated with no discussion of the issue from me.

First if all, Vietnam and China still have a strong Communist Party. China's is nearing the age totalitarian states like that break up. There has been much talk about how and if the Chinese communist party can reinvent itself and last and I am hoping it dies.

I never supported the partition of Europe or Sino-Soviet style communism. And I know what they are and how they word.

maybe you should worry about your communication skills before you make pronouncements of what you know nothing of.

That's incorrect.

I've been to China several times. The political party that runs China is more like the authoritarian party that ran Chile under General Pinochet than the totalitarian party that ran China under Mao.

In many ways, China is more capitalistic than is the U.S. today.

Economic liberalization is what will topple China's political system.

Why?

Because when people don't have to worry about how to get their next meal, they can start worrying about other things, including the right to speak their minds or worship how they choose.

And you are truly nuts. The Chinese Communist party runs the country as it is constitutionally required. They allow capitalism as the rope for you guys to hang yourselves.

I lived in Rottach-Egern on lake Tegernsee. My parents probably wouldn't have let me keep a king's ransom of gold, never mind the then West German government. ;-)

I have been reading "will it survive" articles on the Chinese Communist party. I am well aware of the changes there, but the Communist Party is still in power, still has a huge membership. The changes were made to make China more competitive globally, but they still hold the reins there.

They are the reason people are afraid to talk and live lives that are more unfettered. Let's hope they fall, shall we?

"You are like a DRUNK cornflake gurl."

Sounds like you are projecting. I only drank when I was in the Army, and that was just to socialize, because one does not get anywhere socially there without being willing to consume alcohol at least socially.

Even then, I nursed my beer and 'watered' the house plants at anywhere I was at a home party.

To me, four beers meant I was at my limit. I never went over it, in fact I rarely got to it. 1980 was the last time I drank a beer, it's been way longer since I drank distilled spirits.

It helps I still can't really stand the taste of beer.

Well, I guess if you didn't like beer you stayed out of München during Octoberfest. Beautiful beautiful part of Germany.

Rottach-Egern and lake Tegerensee taken from the top of Wallberg Mountain.

I was very much a minor in the mid-sixties, hence I'll take your word on Octoberfest until I go to one. I do want to go back to Bavaria. I liked it better than Berlin, which at that time was partitioned. My step dad was a captain for Pan American World Airways; (the old Pan Am.)

I person who works for me was actually in the Tiananmen Square protest. He is no fan of the Communist Party, but he agrees with me -- economic liberalization is the driver behind the political turmoil that China is seeing today, which is unreported in the U.S.
