To: Mudboy Slim (#66) MUDBOY SLIM A Biography MUDBOY SLIM WAS BORN in Lintpick, Louisiana, in the 1950s.* His father, Wayne, made what living he could selling military secrets to the Soviets. Since the elder Slim held only the rank of Army cook, there wasn't much market for his information. (He would often bitterly claim, "the stupid Russians don't realize that an army travels on its stomach!") Somehow, the family eked by. Because of Dad's line of work, the Slims had to move frequently. In addition to living in 17 parishes in Louisiana and 9 different counties in Georgia, Alabama, and Arkansas, young Mudboy grew up in Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Detroit, always feeling out of place in the northern towns. The locals would encourage this feeling by beating young Mudboy senseless on a weekly basis. "Something about his face," a childhood friend explained. Mudboy got his first guitar on his 12th birthday, though his father refused to buy any strings for it until Mud was almost fourteen. Still, this didn't prevent him from practicing six hours a day for two years. It is this early, stringless, tuneless, playing that accounts for much of Mudboy's unique style. Mudboy married for the first time at seventeen. Then, again, at eighteen, and finally settled down with the "love of my life" at age 20. She left him after two weeks, carrying another boy's child. That's when Mudboy ran away from home for good. Mudboy spent the late '60s playing in barely-adequate bar bands ** along the east coast, usually leaving the groups, and town, just ahead of the police. MUDBOY'S FIRST BREAK came when he was working as a janitor at the famous Record Plant recording studio. Late one night, he snuck into a studio to "fool around." While recording a series of "blistering solos," he managed to erase the master tape of Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water." He was fired immediately, but an assistant engineer kept a dub of the solo and six months later Mud was invited to play on a Spooky Tooth session. Asked to leave the recording session because of his aggressive drunkenness, Mudboy stumbled into another failed session-man, drummer "Spud" "Skank" Noonan, who was lying in the alley behind the studio. Immediately, they decided to start a band. Almost immediately, they decided to get something more to drink. While attempting to rob the liquor store, Mud and "Skank" met Tommy "Low Balls" Holliman, an itinerant bass player, who was also attempting to rob the liquor store. Thus, in the paddywagon on the way to the police station, was Blacktooth formed. After receiving suspended sentences, the trio began practicing in earnest and in Holliman's mother's house. Realizing that their sound was "too huge" for the battered equipment they possessed, the young men fell upon a plan to finance both a really loud sound system and their first album. Unfortunately, Mrs. Holliman hadn't been able to keep up the payments on her homeowners policy and, while she wasn't completely killed in the "accident," relations with her son were strained, to the point that the band was forced to find a new place to practice. Deciding that the "shortest distance between two points is prob'ly illegal anyway," Mudboy and the band broke into the Record Plant and, recording secretly between 4 and 5 o'clock in the morning over the course of a month, produced the premier Blacktooth album, Butt Nekkid. The cover, a Polaroid self-portrait of the band "mooning" the viewer, was banned in every state in the Union, save Louisiana. "Hell," said Parish Sheriff "Buzz" Weamer, "we seen that sad sight before." "That was like a concept album," Mud would later comment, though he never elaborated on what exact "concept" was intended, and critics never noticed. What was clear was the almost-hit song, "Jackknife." An instant anthem among "Wildcat" truckers and other scofflaws, it debuted at number 99 on the Billboard Hot 100 and over the course of three weeks moved all the way up to number 93 before falling into oblivion. Blacktooth, the band, would take a while longer to reach that destination. MUDBOY SLIM IS CURRENTLY TOURING UNDER THE AUSPICES OF A 15,000-HOUR COMMUNITY SERVICE PLEA BARGAIN. So I stood there with my arms folded not six inches from his ear. He kept looking back nervously, and whispered to his friends, then asked his more muscular buddy if he wanted to hold the flag. We will be doing the Afghan people a tremendous favor getting rid of these self righteous thugs who beat women with sticks and execute anyone who doesn’t believe the same way they do. We’ve barely gotten started and if we were the same kind of people that you idiots are, the war would have been over the first couple of days because we would have dropped a couple of neutron bombs and come back home. We know because of the carnage we suffered in New York and Washington on September 11th. When I see one of you draft card burning love and peace flower children spouting off about what we are doing in Afghanistan or criticizing our government for their efforts on the home front I’d like to pick you up by the nap of your soft neck and shake you like a bulldog shakes a rat. Don’t you people realize what you’re doing? Don’t you realize that there is nothing short of absolute victory acceptable in this war? Don’t you know or care that if we don’t finish this we will leave a world to our children and grandchildren a world we don’t even want to think about? Can you imagine a six year old kid carrying a gas mask to school? Our government is straining every nerve to protect us and eradicate the menace we face no matter what you think about it. And they don’t need a bunch of non combat arm chair generals telling the population that they don’t know what they’re doing. They know what they’re doing. I have been from coast to coast since the tragedy of September 11th and I find a totally different attitude among the hard working, tax paying, salt of the earth people of this country. They’re ready to fight, sacrifice and do whatever else it takes to defeat our enemy. You people are so out of touch with the vast part of the population of this nation. You live in an intellectually incestuous world. You never see anybody except each other and you wouldn’t know a sledge hammer from a plowshare much less the people who work with them. He almost recites the Democrat talking points, even down to the fact that Bush lied about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. (Laughing.) So in order, Iran's president threw a -- and I told you the media would love this guy. I told you that the media could be played by this guy, that he would be looked at as the peace broker, the man who cares. That Bush would be portrayed as obstinate and uninterested. They know who their allies are in the Middle East in this country, the Democratic Party, the Drive-By Media. So from the Associated Press: "Iran's president threw a deft trump card into his standoff with the West on Monday when he dispatched a letter to President Bush proposing 'new solutions' to the crisis." He didn't propose any solutions! He didn't even reference the nuclear problem, which is the primary problem that we have. They refer to this letter as, "a diplomatic overture that vastly complicates U.S. hopes for U.N. Security Council sanctions to punish the Islamic regime." I mean, that lead, that first paragraph, I'm telling you, this writer, Steven Hurst, he's out of Cairo; this guy had to have an orgasm writing this. He just loved this, praise Mahmoud, explain how Mahmoud's deft trump card now screws the United States' efforts at the United Nations. "Some analysts also saw the letter as a signal of a possible power struggle in Iran. While Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did not disclose what he wrote to the American leader, the letter's very existence appeared to offer Russia and China handy additional justification--" Well, we know what's in the letter now. So he played the left like a fiddle. Here's the story about oil prices down a dollar on Mahmoud's letter. Oil fell over one dollar -- (panting) -- everybody pants with excitement. By the way, USA Today has a poll, I guess it's Gallup, did a poll on who Americans blame for the oil price -- and 50% of the American people blame the oil companies. Jonah Goldberg has a piece today in National Review Online about populism. He's got a great lead, great open. Two plus two does not equal five, but in American politics if millions of people thought it did, Congress would sanction it because it's a constituency. It's not a collection of idiots that think two plus two is five, it's a large number of people that need to be listened to. So 50% of the American people blame the oil companies. Do you know what responsibility the oil companies have for the price of oil? Zip, zero, nada. This means that 50% of the American people are dead wrong and haven't the slightest understanding how the price of oil, and thus the price of gasoline, is determined. And yet, since 50% of the American people stupidly, ignorantly, think it's the oil companies, that's why we're going to get Big Oil executives up there, and they're going to get hammered, and they're going to get blamed. It's the same kind of thinking that drove the port deal. People had no clue what the port deal was about, but it didn't matter, there were so many of them, didn't matter that they were wrong or ignorant or didn't understand it, politicians had to get in gear. That's why populism is a bad thing, because it has no regard for what's actually true about anything. So I factor this into my formula, which I will share with you in mere moments, about the reason the mainstream media, while losing so much influence, at the same time could do so much damage. Anyway, oil fell over a buck on Monday "on hopes that tension--" people are out there hoping -- (panting) -- hoping that tension over "Iran's nuclear ambition will ease after Tehran made an unprecedented move to contact Washington." Oh, dialogue! Liberals love dialogue. I don't care what's being said. They just love dialogue. One dollar, ladies and gentlemen, off the price of oil, and Mahmoud is getting the credit in the mainstream media. Then here's another AP story: "Iran Letter to Bush Criticizes U.S. Govt." Want to hear some things that Mahmoud said? Try this. "[The letter] lambasted Bush for his handling of the Sept. 11 attacks, accused the media of spreading lies about the Iraq war." By the way, the media agrees with that. He is not criticizing the media. The New York Times beating itself up over [the lies], and Judy Miller, that's why she's out, actually, because she bought the lies of the Bush administration about weapons of mass destruction. The media feels chagrined and embarrassed, so Mahmoud is showing them that he's on their side. Lambasted Bush for his handling of the September 11th attacks, accused the media of spreading lies and that makes it Bush's fault, of course, because Bush lied to them as well as everybody else. The letter "questioned whether the world would be a different place if the money spent on Iraq had been spent to fight poverty." Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in his letter to Bush, criticizes all the money spent in Iraq, saying it would have been better spent on poverty. "Would not your administration's political and economic standing have been stronger? And I am most sorry to say, would there have been an ever- increasing global hatred of the American government," had you spent the money poverty instead of the war in Iraq? Folks, too good to be true. Here's the Reuters version of it. "On the pretext of the existence of WMDs (weapons of mass destruction)--" this graces Mahmoud's letter, "--this great tragedy came to engulf both the peoples of the occupied and the occupying country. Later it was revealed that no WMDs existed to begin with," said Mahmoud in his letter. "Lies were told in the Iraqi matter. What was the result? I have no doubt that telling lies is reprehensible in any culture, and you do not like to be lied to." It's Democrat talking points. If I were a Democrat, I'd be worried about this.
