(State College, PA) - A dangerous mix of weather including blizzard conditions, ice, rain, thunderstorms and bitterly cold temperatures is hammering the central states and causing travel nightmares. In addition, a swath of heavy snow is spreading northeastward over the Midwest. The sharp cold front at the leading edge of the arctic air that has been moving out of the Northwest over the past several days is clashing with the unseasonably warm air that has been in place over the eastern third of the nation. On Wednesday, the front sparked rain and thunderstorms, hail and damaging winds from central Texas to Michigan. The low pressure center responsible for the snow, ice and thunderstorms will move into the western Ohio Valley Thursday night, then turn more toward the east on Friday. North and west of the track there will be a major snowstorm. On the eastern edge of the snowstorm there will be a mix of rain and ice, which will eventually turn to snow. The thunderstorms are forecast to erupt Friday as far north as New England. The heaviest snowfall, ranging from 12 to 18 inches, will fall across northern Missouri and northwestern Illinois, with up to a foot of snow forecast from the Texas panhandle and northeastern Oklahoma through the Chicagoland area into central Michigan and southern and central Ontario. The Winter Weather Center is warning icy conditions will exist from northeastern Texas to southeastern Ontario as rain passes through a thin layer of below-freezing air, creating ice pellets or turning the rain to ice as it reaches the ground. The frozen precipitation is coating trees, power lines, sidewalks and roadways, especially bridges and overpasses, adding to the hazardous travel conditions and creating the potential for power outages. (AP Photo/Dan Gill) Earlier on Thursday, rain changed to ice as cold air undercut the warmer air above the surface. Overland Park, Kan., was coated with a half of an inch of freezing rain in less than four hours and streets in the Kansas City area were turned into skating rinks. In addition to the ice-covered roads, powerful winds are creating blizzard conditions from Oklahoma and eastern Kansas into the Midwest. Whiteouts and blowing and drifting snow will create dangerous travel conditions, especially in rural areas. Conditions will worsen overnight as the storm continues its movement toward the Great Lakes. State and local police in a number of central Plains states are advising against traveling unless absolutely necessary through Thursday night and into Friday. Even areas that do not receive freezing or frozen precipitation will experience treacherous travel conditions through the night and into Friday. The rapid temperature drop following the passage of the front will freeze any moisture on the ground, roadways and sidewalks, creating a slick coating of black ice. The Travel Center will have information on highway conditions and flight delays or cancellations. As always, allow extra driving time if you must travel through the storm area, and check with your airline before heading to the airport. The Weather Summaries page has more detail on the major winter storm. Kate Bilo and cameraman Verne Horst are on the road covering the storm as it makes its way toward Chicago. Bitter Temperatures Follow Dramatically colder air is following the storm system as it moves across the nation. Tuesday's high in Amarillo, Tex., reached 67 degrees. Thursday, there were seven inches of snow on the ground and the high reached 28 degrees. Similarly, Wednesday's high in Dallas was 80 degrees, while Thursday snow had been falling and the temperature had dipped into the 20s. Friday will feature much of the same from the Great Lakes to the East Coast. As the storm powers out of the Ohio Valley it will spark damaging thunderstorms to the south and snow and ice to the north. High winds gusting to 50 mph will add to the nasty mix. The front will reach the major East Coast cities, including New York City, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington, D.C., during the afternoon or evening hours on Friday. There is the likelihood of a damaging wind event, from the Appalachians to the Atlantic coast, as showers and thunderstorms associated with the front move through and immediately following the front as the cold air rushes in. The transition from record and near-record highs to winter temperatures will continue into the weekend as the front pushes farther to the northeast. There is the likelihood of a damaging wind event City Thurs. Fri. City Fri. Sat. Detroit, Mich. 63 40 Pittsburgh, Pa. 58 41 Columbus, Ohio 66 43 Philadelphia, Pa. 70 49 Memphis, Tenn. 72 44 New York, N.Y. 68 49 The Severe Weather Center advises the strong jet stream accompanying the front will add fuel to the intense thunderstorms that contain the potential of damaging winds and tornado development in the strongest of the storms. Severe Weather Expert Henry Margusity has details on the storm in his blog. In addition, AccuWeather.com has hourly updates on the severe weather outbreak across the Plains states. Here is the latest radar from Memphis, Tennessee.
A Nor'easter for Monday? The weather focus is on the storm advancing across the country that originated from the Northwest. Next week, it may be a storm developing off the Atlantic coast that will draw all of the attention. According to Expert Senior Meteorologist John Kocet, the cold front trailing the storm will stall along the Southeast coast as a second storm begins to form. The path of the second storm will determine its impact on the East Coast. If the storm moves up the coast it will set up a classic Nor'easter that will bring snow to New England. If the storm moves out into the Atlantic, it will have little if any impact on the Eastern Seaboard. AccuWeather.com meteorologists will be closely monitoring the development of the second storm.
