Attorney in hijab defends call for other women at 9/11 hearing to wear 'appropriate' clothing Published May 06, 2012 The defense attorney who wore a traditional Islamic outfit during the rowdy arraignment of the accused Sept. 11 terrorists is defending her courtroom appeal that other women in the room wear more "appropriate" clothing to the proceedings -- out of respect for her client's Muslim beliefs. Cheryl Bormann, counsel for defendant Walid bin Attash, attended the arraignment Saturday dressed in a hijab, apparently because her client insisted on it. She further requested that the court order other women to follow that example so that the defendants do not have to avert their eyes "for fear of committing a sin under their faith." At a press conference Sunday at Guantanamo Bay, Bormann said she dresses in a hijab at "all times" when she meets with her client "out of respect" for his beliefs. Asked why she requested other women do the same, Bormann said, "When you're on trial for your life, you need to be focused." Bormann, who is not Muslim, claimed the issue came up several years ago, when a paralegal wore "very short skirts" and it became a distraction for the defendants. She said that on Saturday, "somebody" was also dressed "in a way that was not in keeping with my client's religious beliefs." "If because of someone's religious beliefs, they can't focus when somebody in the courtroom is dressed in a particular way, I feel it is incumbent upon myself as a counsel to point that out and ask for some consideration from the prosecution," she said. "Suffice to say it was distracting to members of the accused." The clothing request was just one of several unusual moments during Saturday's lengthy and chaotic hearing. The court hearing for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his four co-defendants should have taken a couple of hours at most. Instead it lasted almost 13 hours, including meal and prayer breaks, as the men appeared to make a concerted effort to stall Saturday's hearing. They knelt in prayer, ignored the judge, wouldn't listen to Arabic translations over their head sets and one even insisted on having the more than 20 pages detailing the charges against them read aloud, rather than deferred for later in their case as the judge wanted, which added more than two hours to the proceedings. Defense lawyer James Connell said Sunday that a tentative trial date of May 2013 is a "placeholder" until a true date can be set for the trial. "It's going to take time," said the chief prosecutor, Army Brig. Gen. Mark Martins, who said he expects to battle a barrage of defense motions before the case goes to trial. "I am getting ready for hundreds of motions because we want them to shoot everything they can shoot at us." The defendants' behavior outraged 9/11 family members watching on closed-circuit video feeds around the United States at East Coast military bases. One viewer shouted, "C'mon, are you kidding me?" at the Fort Hamilton base in Brooklyn. A handful of people who lost family members in the attacks and were selected by a lottery to attend the proceedings watched in the courtroom. "They're engaging in jihad in a courtroom," said Debra Burlingame, whose brother, Charles, was the pilot of the plane that flew into the Pentagon. She watched the proceeding from Brooklyn. The defense attorneys in the case have complained repeatedly about the proceedings and about the military tribunal system itself. Human rights groups and defense lawyers say the secrecy of Guantanamo and the military tribunals will make it impossible for the defense. They argued the U.S. kept the case out of civilian court to prevent disclosure of the treatment of prisoners like Mohammed, who was waterboarded 183 times. A family member of one 9/11 victim spoke to reporters Sunday and said he has respect for the defense attorneys. "They're doing their job," said Eddie Bracken of Staten Island, New York, whose sister Lucy Fishman died at the World Trade Center in 2001. Bracken also read from a prepared statement which was directed at Mohammed. "You never killed the American spirit. Let freedom ring, let freedom ring, let freedom ring -- and that's what I have to say," he said. Mohammed, the admitted 9/11 architect, and the four men accused of aiding the 9/11 conspiracy put off their pleas until a later date. They face 2,976 counts of murder and terrorism in the 2001 attacks that sent hijacked jetliners into New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The charges carry the death penalty. Earlier Saturday, Mohammed cast off his earphones providing Arabic translations of the proceeding and refused to answer Army Col. James Pohl's questions or acknowledge he understood them. All five men refused to participate in the hearing; two passed around a copy of The Economist magazine and leafed through the articles. Bin Attash was confined to a restraint chair when he came into court on Saturday, released only after he promised to behave. Ramzi Binalshibh began praying alongside his defense table, followed by Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali, in the middle of the hearing; Binalshibh then launched into a tirade in which he compared a prison official to the late Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi and declared that he was in danger. "Maybe they will kill me and say I committed suicide," he said in a mix of Arabic and broken English.

[even after attacking a US ship.] The greater story here is how the Israel can be busted murdering Americans in an attack that if you look at the details was irrefutably deliberate and planned, and yet the Main Stream Media made hardly any mention of it other than back pages on a few news papers. And even after 40 years of the survivors telling their stories and making it painfully obvious what happened the Media has refused to report it and there are no investigations. This is why they could lie about Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq without worry when they knew it would sooner or later be dscovered false. They have no need to worry or explain anything (like the demolition of building 7) because they know the press will ignore it and even excuse it.
If people can ignore the disinfo and focus on real people which we have plenty of actual documentation for being behind 911 and the following wars, then we can expose these crooks and let the consequences fall on them however they may. So who did it? To answer this question one should first ask, "who had the power to cover it up?" Who would have the power to censor the media and have total confidence that they could censor the media given an event this size? One look at the non-coverage of Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine should give you one answer. Nowhere, in the US televised media, do they even mention that there is an occupation. This massive conflict, which one would assume would be impossible to conceal, is totally shielded from the American public.
Why is the judge even putting up with this nonsense? They aren't American citizens and they aren't being tried in America,so they have none of the Constitutional Guarantees they hate so much and want to destroy. Tell the MF'ers they either behave or be restrained in pigskin. No time out for prayers,either. They respect no other religion than their own,so treat them like they would treat us of the situation were reversed. The ones that have admitted guilt or are found guilty should be beheaded and have their remains instantly covered in pig blood. I don't know who he is,but regardless of his identity you can bet everything you own the Congressional Black Caucus and every other leftist group is looking over his shoulder and applying all the pressure they can apply. FACT: They are NOT American citizens and they are not in America. They have no Freedom of Religion. Not even in their home countries,where you MUST be Muslim or you risk dying. FACT: Stone never once said they don't have the right to be Muslims. He and others,including ME,make the claim that American courts and citizens are under NO obligation to respect their religion in any shape,form,or matter. In FACT,it is un-Constitutional to do so. Stone was talking about all Muslims here in the United States. I worked with mamy American Muslims in Portland and I saw for myself how assimilated into the American Experience people who's parents or grandparents emigrated to the United States are. I served in the United States Army with Muslims. If Stone were inthe Military and expressed such an intolerable hatred for religions other then his own, he would be discharged and sanctioned in some way. I see no difference in many ways between his religion and Islam. I see intolerence, narrow mindedness and unreasonable haterd as the two faiths compete to see which one of them is the most aggressive one in trying to talk and force people into their ranks. I have also had to deal with Stone's immature barbs about my religion. He baited me on this pont jus tthe other day. Tghis is not a theocracy, and Islam is an acceptable religion for the United States if Christianity and Judaism is. That is the bottom line. It's not just my or Stone's opinion, it is law. law that emminates directly from how the First Amendment is interpreted.
I grew up in the Detroit area, which has the largest Arabic population outside of the Middle East -- about 400,000 people. A little over 200,000 of them are Muslims and a little under 200,000 are various types of Christians (Chaldeans, Maronites, Copts, etc). The Arab Christians are generally assimilated into society. The Arab Muslims are generally not.
The last time witches were burned in this country it was by professed "good" Christians burning their own to gain power and in some instances to rid themselves of economic competitors. All based on the words and changing stories of teenage girls. Good grief. That is one good example you bring up, of why Fundies and Vangies need to be kept as far from the halls of government as possible.

He gets his nut on the thought of all that lack of due process involved with lynch mobs, that's all. We had an excellent Beltane ceremony last Sunday at the Arboretum at the stone circle there where the summer festivals take place. The numbers of people in my community are growing without doing the sort of recruiting his faith does. We even had some people who are Christian there enjoying the event. None of them had the bad character flaw of being evangelical in any way. Stone could learn from Christians like that.
You are speaking of the phenomenon known as enclaving. There are Jewish enclaves back in New York that are not about assimilation, much as the Amish have been in Pennsylvania for many generations. We have a good sized Muslim population in Eugene, and a larger one in Portland. People in it are very assimilated as a rule. In any event, neither religion is going away unless the Constitution is changed or voided, so everyone is going to have to continue to live with one another.
Very true. Muslims in the Detroit area generally live in Dearborn and Hamtramck. The Detroit area has generally been divided up into ethnic enclaves. The City of Detroit is 88% black. Hammtramck used to be a largely Polish / Catholic city. Now they do the call to prayer. Southfield used to be largely Jewish. Now it's largely black. On and on...
Lynch mobs have been known to turn on some of their very own members while in their fervor for 'due process'.

I almost did. One guy popped up with a beard and a turban,and he mostly stayed in the barracks until they got his discharge papers done. He was supposed to be working in the kitchen,but they didn't want him. All I ever saw him do was glare at people. I see no difference in many ways between his religion and Islam. You HAVE to be kidding! It's been several hundred years since a Christian religious leader has called for women to be stoned to death for adultery or a minister has called for a Holy War to kill all non-Christians.
