politics and politicians Title: Michigan: Republicans Raised Taxes, And Democrats Plan To Make Sure You Know That Without fanfare and without disclosing to unsuspecting citizens what they were really up to, Democrats launched their campaign to regain control of the Michigan House last week. They did it with a series of statewide news conferences blaming the GOP for raising taxes on virtually everything that moves in this state. There's not much sense in taking the edge off your news conference by letting the voters in on that little secret. As a result of this sleight of hand, they got the headline they wanted: Democrats Call for Repeal of GOP Tax Hikes. The Republicans are stuck with this because they did support the increases. So they have The good news for the Republicans is none of the increases was noticed when weary taxpayers forked over their hard earnings to the state on tax day April 17th. Next year will be a different story, but that will be long after this next election cycle is in the history books. Which is why the Democrats are trying to remind everyone what the Republican really did For example, everyone under 67 will pay a pension tax in some form or another. Some will lose part of their Homestead Property tax break, and if you contribute to charities, you can forget about claiming a deduction. Those are gone, too. It is truly amazing that the Democrats have this incredible and rare opportunity to After all Republicans have told you for years they are against higher taxes, but there they were, in lock-step with new governor, raising them. But the governor, somehow, got them to hold their collective noses and vote yes, while the Many of the House Republicans who were in competitive districts, where the D's have a chance to win, were given a pass on the tax hikes. So that helps the GOP right there. Plus the governor will campaign with House members, if they think it will help. And he will tell the voters raising the taxes on some seniors was the right and fair thing to do. Republicans can run all the commercials they want claiming the tax hikes provided $1.8 billion in business tax relief, which supposedly will create jobs even though the However the explanation is not a 10-second sound bite. It will take time for voters to not only listen but then understand why the tax hike was good. Democrats on the other hand can run a pithy commercial backed up with simple bumper In the war of words where the attention span of citizens is measured in nano-seconds, As it does with most elections it will come down to about 15-25 seats in the House that are in play. While this newly enacted voting district plan is getting its first test run, most incumbents will get their jobs back without lifting two fingers. And of course there are other factors in play that will determine which party runs the show in the House. Those include how well President Obama does at the top of the ticket; the state of the economy; and local issues that can determine who wins this House seat or that. But for now, with the quiet launch of the "GOP Raised Your Taxes" campaign, the Democrats are feeling they have a shot. And if they win, they owe Gov. Snyder a huge thank-you note for making his party support all those tax hikes.
