$9: Price for a Month's Supply of Birth Control Pills at Target 3 Miles from Georgetown Law

By Gregory Gwyn-Williams, Jr.

March 5, 2012

(CNSNews.com) – Although Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke testified to the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee last month that contraception can cost a law student $3,000 over three years and that some of her fellow students could not afford it, a Target store only 3 miles from the law school currently sells a month's supply of birth control pills for only $9 to people who do not have insurance plans covering contraceptives.

That would make the total cost for birth control pills for a student who decided to use them for all three years of law school just $324.

Fluke was the sole witness who appeared on Feb. 23 before an all-Democratic panel chaired by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Fluke, the 30-year-old past president of Georgetown Law Students for Reproductive Justice, said she was testifying in support of the Obamacare regulation that requires all health insurance plans--including those offered by Catholic universities--to cover sterilizations and all FDA-approved contraceptives. She said she wanted to tell the stories of some women at Georgetown Law who were affected by the fact that the student health-care plan at the Catholic university does not cover contraceptives.

(The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has said that forcing Catholics and Catholic institutions to provide insurance coverage for sterilizations, contraceptive and abortifacients forces Catholics to violate Catholic teaching and is a violation of the free exercise of religion guaranteed by the First Amendment.)

“Without insurance coverage, contraception can cost a woman over $3,000 during law school," Fluke said. "For a lot of students who, like me, are on public interest scholarships, that’s practically an entire summer’s salary. Forty percent of female students at Georgetown Law report struggling financially as a result of this policy.

“One student told us of how embarrassed and powerless she felt when she was standing at the pharmacy counter, learning for the first time that contraception wasn’t covered, and had to walk away because she couldn’t afford it," said Fluke. "Women like her have no choice but to go without contraception."

“Just last week," Fluke testified, "a married female student told me she had to stop using contraception because she couldn’t afford it any longer. Women employed in low wage jobs without contraceptive coverage face the same choice."

“You might respond that contraception is accessible in lots of other ways," Fluke told the Democratic panel. "Unfortunately, that's not true."

CNSNews.com confirmed, however, that the Target store at 3100 14th St., NW, in Washington, D.C., which is 3 miles from the Georgetown Law campus, offers Tri-Sprintec, the generic form of the birth-control pill Ortho Tri-Cyclen. Target sells a month's supply of this birth control pill for just $9 to individuals without health insurance coverage for the pills.

A CVS pharmacy only two blocks from the Georgetown Law campus also sells a month's supply of the same generic birth control pills for $33.

Tri-Sprintec is an FDA-approved prescription drug and is the generic version of Ortho Tri-Cyclen. The Physician's Desk Reference (PDR) says it is for: "Prevention of pregnancy." It is also decrease the risk of ovarian or endometrial cancer and, for some women, to fight acne.

This entire event was orchestrated by the left to make conservatives look bad.

This woman us not a real college student. She is a Democrat plant.

Unfortunately, the left are succeeding because Republicans like Santorum are blithering idiots.

I figured that when I watched part of the C-Span video and she introduced the other women who went with her as "activists".....

Fluke says she is speaking for a woman who couldn't afford the pricey brand-name Pill that she needs (for the hormones) to keep her ovarian cysts at bay. Supposedly this "friend" has a bad health problem now and may never be able to have children. Supposedly.

For the pricier brand-name stuff, it's more like $20-$40 a month.

I read another piece that Georgetown will pay for the Pill if it is not for birth-control, i.e. in cases like this one to control ovarian cysts. It isn't clear why they declined to cover the supposed "friend".

I read elsewhere that the generic Pill can cost as little as $6 per month at many chain stores if you buy a three-month supply.

women with poor nutrition and who smoke or drink large amounts may have difficulties with fertility- also they develop a condition called Polycystic ovary syndrom http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/polycystic-ovary- syndrome/DS00423.

It produces abnormal periods and infertility. Birth control pills are given to help a woman regulate her cycles.

Of course, no one is going to tell the public that in many cases, poor health, emotional imbalance and poor nutrition and obesity are going to have issues- with fertility.

Mmmm...we still don't know anything about Fluke's imaginary "friend".

Does she exist? I've seen no proof.

If she does exist and does have that condition, it may not be bad health or emotional imbalance (and exactly how do you quantify something that subjective?) or poor nutrition or obesity.

I'm beginning to think Fluke made it up completely. She enrolled at Georgetown to do exactly this, to try to ram Obama's abortion mandate down the throats of Catholic institutions.

Well it is a good point about whether she exists or not.. my point is that now they want birth control pills for things that can be controled by making personal healthy choices.

If she is referring to infertility- (which it sounds like she is trying to invoke sympathy for someone being infertile) THEN my question is why do the taxpayers have to pay for women's abortions AND their infertility?

How do you measure emotional imbalance? By measuring dysfunctional behavior. Chronic Antidepressants are one thing to look for. Antidepressants effect fertility.

Instead of giving her friend, for example, expensive hormones in birth control pills- why not see if she is overweight and on antidepressants?

The other thing to take into consideration is that the three month pill is much more expensive than the monthly pill.

If a woman doesn't want her cycle for three months- she can get a very expensive pill.

IOW- I am calling bologna on the story of the friend.

Have you ever noticed they all know "friends" who have these problems and they use this as justification for everything they do???? Especially if the problem isn't even common.. They want you to give up all you have for just a "FEW" people, instead of the "FEW" people learning how to deal with their own problems!!

I think it's a hoax unless Fluke produces this woman and her medical history.

Georgetown's policy explicitly allows the prescription of birth control pills if the purpose is for general health (like preventing ovarian cysts).

It's all very fishy. And we know that Fluke enrolled at Georgetown with an agenda to force this issue.
