Opinions/Editorials Title: Corseted Minds: Does Fear of Irrelevance Send Conservative Men Fleeing to the Victorian Age? In the last 50 years, American women have finally been able to reliably earn a living, thus rendering men economically unnecessary. Women are outstripping men in education. We’re breaking the glass ceiling. Childbirth out of wedlock no longer carries disgrace. There’s enough sperm stashed away in banks to promulgate the human race indefinitely. On a biological level, modern science has debunked the Adam’s rib story about the female being a derivative of the male. Still more shattering, there’s even worry that the Y chromosome is in danger of extinction. At the very least, it has seen better days. As the New York Times recently reported: “Men, or at least male biologists, have long been alarmed that their tiny Y chromosome, once the same size as its buxom partner, the X, will continue to wither away until it simply vanishes. The male sex would then become extinct, they fear, leaving women to invent some virgin-birth method of reproduction and propagate a sexless species.” That’s gotta make Rick Santorum nervous. (Though the Times does concede that men may have “long-term viability” after all). Conservatives find themselves in an era of technological advance, information on steroids, women on the rise, and men who do not know what their role is supposed to be. Can we be surprised that they look back wistfully on a “simpler time” when gender roles were strictly defined – and when men did the defining? #3. To: BorisY (#2) Doesn't barney fag dress victorian ! I assume you mean barney as in barney Frank. This article isn't about dress, it's about longing for what can't be.
#6. To: lucysmom (#3) it's about longing for what can't be. Like queer marriages !
#7. To: BorisY (#6) Boris what do you think is wrong with these people that they support so called queer marriage? Normal healthy societies would never entertain such a notion. What do you think is going to have to happen before we get out of the gutter and start doing the right thing as a nation again?

#16. To: CZ82, A K A Stone (#9) (Edited) What do you think is going to have to happen before we get out of the gutter and start doing the right thing as a nation again? Shooting people you disagree with isn't the way mature adults deal with conflict. Threatening the life of another with a gun is ultimately controlling, and in keeping with the REAL conservative's" idea of liberty.
#21. To: lucysmom (#16) Shooting people you disagree with isn't the way mature adults deal with conflict. That isn't generally the first thing to do I agree. But after a while it is an option. Ask George Washington.
#26. To: A K A Stone (#21) That isn't generally the first thing to do I agree. But after a while it is an option. Ask George Washington. What are you saying - that Washington didn't murder his fellow American citizens because they were in agreement?
#36. To: lucysmom (#26) You consider George Washington to be a murderer?
#37. To: A K A Stone (#36) You consider George Washington to be a murderer? No, you do.
#44. To: lucysmom (#37) (Edited) No, you do. It seems you've really been rattling some cages here today. Surely you know how conservatives hate uppity women. Enough to want to threaten bodily harm to them on the internet it seems. A good woman to a conservative follows the Islamic credo (that they claim to detest) of being submissive. Only in this instance it's to another human being. Without a good supply of slave labor, conservatives would wither up and die.
#45. To: mininggold (#44) (Edited) Feminists are the ones who cause the violence, many times. Feminism is passive agressive baheavior. They demand and create an out of balance system, dominated by women, and people react. Since they are not able to use logic, they invite violence. Feminism is illogical and irrational. No one is threatening violence... the violence is already there. Look at the domestic violence rates. Women are abuse to men, more than men are abusive to women. Want to really discern why men are violent? In good part, and many times because they are invalidated and mistreated. Feminism is instructional and institutional sexism- and it invalidates men- look no further than the title of this article.
#51. To: diva betsy ross (#45) No one is threatening violence... Oh, I guess you missed the picture of a gun posted to me. Or maybe because you've been trained not to hold a man responsible for his behavior, but to blame a woman, you think that was my doing.
#52. To: lucysmom (#51) (Edited) Gun pointed at you? Yeah, I missed that- but like I said, feminists incite violence. It is true that y'all make people feel like they have to defend themselves so, I wouldn't be surprised. Oh and I haven't been trained. I just think for myself. When I was a young girl I didn't understand feminism, because it is illogical. They say they want equality, then they only do what puts them in a position of dominance and that doesn't resonate with my understanding of the word , "equal". Feminists will lie, cheat and steal . As a teenager feminism didn't make sense to me because IF women made much less money for doing the same job as a man- then why didn't employers only hire women, and save themselves some money? Since I saw women staying home and men going off to work- Feminism was not showing me anything real. Frankly I am surprised at how many men and women fall for the lies of feminism.

Sometimes we only see what fits our schema. In many cases employers did hire women over men because they were cheaper - this happened a lot in the trades. I remember my father being really angry, not that women were being hired, but that they were being paid less. Since I saw women staying home and men going off to work- Feminism was not showing me anything real.
Apparently you think every human being longs to stay home and not go to work - not so. Many people LOVE to work and love the work they do. Maybe your dream was to stay home, however it's not every girl's dream. If a girl has the ability and wants to be a geologist, or a volcanologist, or a marine biologists, etc., why shouldn't she have the same opportunity as a boy to do so?
