Title: Make Unemployed Youth Work For Free: Davos Delegates

Young people should work for free for up to two years to gain experience, youth and business leaders said at the World Economic Forum in Davos Thursday.

A new UN resolution to enshrine the importance of a couple of years of voluntary work for young people was urged by delegates including Maurice Lévy, chairman and chief executive of Publicis Groupe, as part of a CNBC-moderated debate on how to avert a lost generation of unemployed youth.

“It’s a bad idea which fails to recognize the heterogeneity of the population,” Peter Diamond, economics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said. “These would be wasted years for some.”

The world needs 600 million new jobs in the next decade to cope with a rising population and the effects of the financial crisis, according to figures released earlier this week by the International Labor Organization.

Unemployment is particularly acute for young people, with the rate of youth unemployment up from 11.7 per cent in 2007 to 12.7 percent in 2011 globally, with advanced economies particularly badly hit.

An estimated 6.4 million young people have dropped out of the labor market because they don’t believe they will ever find a job, according to the ILO.

This is particularly worrying because young people who have a long period of unemployment at the start of their careers are likely to lag behind in earnings for the rest of their lives.

Tidjane Thiam, chief executive of insurer Prudential [PRU 59.87 1.55 (+2.66%) ], said that minimum wage legislation across Europe was an "enemy" of young people and a "machine to destroy jobs" at the conference.

The next president should bomb the UN. With the enemies in it.

They can take their UN bullshit and shove it up Obamas loose asshole.

What effect would a free labor force have on jobs for older, more experienced workers?

I could be wrong, but I don't think the World Economic Forum which meets in Davos, has anything to do with the UN.

I believe it is a meeting of the world's most successful "job creators".

Exactly.

Do you paint for free? Job creators also hire independent contractors. You really aren't the island you think you are. But then you just might qualify for that 2 year slave internship they (a big business consortium) are proposing.

Indentured servants are one step removed from slavery. Anyone like conserva-nutzies who suport this just wants a free tool for uprooting older workers from their jobs at which they have earned higher pay and benefits. And the key word they hate is these workers EARNED this.

I am opposed to this, and I would not have worked for free as a young man at a regular job for anybody.

Slaves and indentured servants have to be fed, clothed, and housed or the "master" doesn't get his investment back in labor.

Exactly. What are these kids supposed to do, hit mum and dad up for this sort of support after mum and dad lose their jobs to kids working for free?

This is not just a stupid idea, this is an epically stupid idea.
