Title: Georgia Lawmaker Who Sponsored Welfare Drug Testing Bill Busted For DUI

A Georgia Republican who co-sponsored legislation that would require random drug testing of welfare recipients was arrested on early Friday morning and charged with DUI, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Rep. Kip Smith was pulled over after a police officer witnessed him run through a red light. The officer said he could smell the odor of alcohol coming from Smith’s car and had the lawmaker take a breathalyzer test, which he failed.

Smith has co-sponsored legislation in the Georgia General Assembly that would require random drug testing for recipients of certain public assistance.

In response to the bill, Democratic Georgia state Rep. Scott Holcomb has introduced legislation that would require lawmakers to pass a drug test before taking office.

“This bill is really very simple,” Holcomb said in December. “If the General Assembly is going to pass laws requiring struggling, jobless Georgians to pay for drug tests as a precondition to receiving state benefits, then members of the General Assembly should lead by example and take the tests first.”

Republican state lawmakers across the country this year have pushed for laws to require drug tests for welfare recipients.

Florida and Missouri have both approved laws requiring low-income parents seeking federal cash assistance to pass a drug test. In October, Florida’s drug testing law was halted by District Court Judge Mary Scriven.

Michigan previously tried to implement a welfare drug testing law, but it was struck down as unconstitutional by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in 2003.

U.S. District Court Judge Victoria Roberts held that testing welfare recipients “could be used for testing the parents of all children who received Medicaid, State Emergency Relief, educational grants or loans, public education or any other benefit from that State.”

That is a great idea. Don't you think?

Here is another one. Mandatory drug testing for all elected politicians. Including Obama or any future president.

A friend of a friend lost his job/career after 18+ years just before Christmas for 'pissing hot'. He should have known better but think of all the money his corporate bosses will reap from his departure - i.e. no retirement, etc.

Does that fit the Libertarian model of freedom?

Economics is a social phenomenon and in no way a “science”, no matter how desperately its high priests would like to have it believed otherwise. It is, instead, a branch of anthropology and the sooner that is recognized and accepted, the better off human-kind in general and the world of academic economics, in particular, shall be proximity1

We probably will see widespread civil disorder in the 1980s, as a direct result of our faltering economic system. Ron Paul

I'm not and never have been a libertarian.

I remember when one came to our high school and talked. I thought he was wacky.

Test positive for weed, get the munchies, and they cut off your food stamps. Bummer.

I don't agree with forced drug testing unless someone receives government money. I support that because it frees up their money that they got from the tax payers to use to buy drugs.

I support it for politicians too. Because they are the ones who got all this started. So they should definitely be tested.

If someone wants to smoke some pot or drink some beers on their own time. I personally don't have a problem with that. Harder drugs like crack, heroin etc should be illegal.

I hope your friend finds another job and does ok. He could challenge the results.

Or next time here is a recipe to pass the test.

Drink 64 ounces of cranberry juice. Then take some vitamin b tablets. Eat a pack of jello. And drink as much water as possible. That will make you pass.

Nothing, I think we agree on drug testing. People mooching off the people who are drug tested should be tested too, imho.

Where did you get this info?

The guy is a civilian and apparently the piss test was unannounced so there was no way he could cram for his exam.

I understand that piss tests don't check for alcohol in the system otherwise they'd lose more than half their work force. I could be wrong on this but that's what I heard many years ago.

I passed a weed test back in the day doing this. Smoked a few days before.

It works. Start about 3 hours before test.

Some places actually test for cigarettes too. Ridiculous.

We have a local business man worth millions. He made some of his money growing tobacco/burley in the past. Now he won't hire or employ smokers.

Edit: I don't know if he does urinalysis on them. I'll have to ask around.

Can you spell hypocrisy?
