NEW YORK (AP) — For the first time, the top export of the United States, the world's biggest gas guzzler, is — wait for it — fuel.

Measured in dollars, the nation is on pace this year to ship more gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel than any other single export, according to U.S. Census data going back to 1990. It will also be the first year in more than 60 that America has been a net exporter of these fuels.

Just how big of a shift is this? A decade ago, fuel wasn't even among the top 25 exports. And for the last five years, America's top export was aircraft.

The trend is significant because for decades the U.S. has relied on huge imports of fuel from Europe in order to meet demand. It only reinforced the image of America as an energy hog. And up until a few years ago, whenever gasoline prices climbed, there were complaints in Congress that U.S. refiners were not growing quickly enough to satisfy domestic demand; that controversy would appear to be over.

Still, the U.S. is nowhere close to energy independence.

There's at least one domestic downside to America's growing role as a fuel exporter. Experts say the trend helps explain why U.S. motorists are paying more for gasoline. The more fuel that's sent overseas, the less of a supply cushion there is at home.

Obama killed the economy, we have no industry left so we need less fuel. My truck burns very little sitting in the driveway all day.

You Bushbots are just too funny. That must be why you never see a truck on those clogged California freeways.

We are exporting fuel because other countries are willing to pay more for it and we are getting more mileage per gallon per vehicle.

I have a truck sitting in the driveway too - a '66 Chevrolet with an eight foot bed - it gets 9 miles to a gallon.

The car I drive gets 30 mpg on the freeway.

Wow.

That can't be true. As a person who believes that Muslims pose an existential threat to the very existence of the United States and our way of life, it is obvious that he is an Army or Marine Crop infantryman serving in Afghanistan protecting our shores from the reed boat Afghan Navy and poppy plant Air Force. I mean anyone who is so worried about Muslims that they would support police state legislation and vote for candidates on record as wanting to increase that type of legislation couldn't be just sitting around collecting unemployment checks from Uncle Sugar, they'd have to be doing their part in keeping the country safe. Right? Anything less would make them hypocrites and cowards and surely our good leftist friend Happy Quanzaa isn't one of those.

The United States military is hiring chickenhawk. Since you are so pro war and pro police state what the fuck are you doing sitting behind a keyboard stewing in fear? Get off your fat ass and protect the nation you claim is in so much danger that we must abandon civil liberties.

You need to sell your Beemer then. Just think of the insurance costs you will save.

There y'all go again, lying about what I've said and no quote with a link or anything to back it up. If you did research my posts you'd find I've been highly critical of the government's seizure of our liberties.

People can say anything. For instance, Bush and the Republican Congress claimed they believed in small government. Actions speak louder than words

The FACTS are that your actions on this board has consisted of shilling for a group of people who champion both the Patriot Act and the NDAA and in more than one debate have stated that the legislation does not go far enough. Not only that but you have been actively engaged in smearing the only candidate in either party who is on record as standing up against both pieces of legislation.

There is no lie. Your actions prove the truth. In this election cycle you are either voting for against the police state. You are voting for it. Your criticism against this type of legislation is meaningless and empty.

It's not that we're exporting more fuel, it's that we're exporting less manufactured goods. Not a good sign.
