WASHINGTON - Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley and six other Democrats charged Tuesday that modern political campaigns - and democracy itself - are threatened by a pair of "awful" Supreme Court decisions that can only be fixed by changing the U.S. Constitution itself. The senators said during a news conference that adding a new provision to the Constitution is necessary if Congress wants to nullify a 1976 ruling that said campaign spending was the same as free speech and a 2010 ruling that removed all limits on campaign spending for special interests, corporations and labor unions. "In the mid-70s the activist Supreme Court opened the flood gates to allow special interest money to flow into our elections by falsely equating money with speech," Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said, referring to the case Buckley v Valeo. That case was followed last year by Citizens United v Federal Election Commission which opened the way to a surge of campaign spending by corporations, interest groups and labor unions. Schumer called Citizens United "Buckley on steroids - which really took the First Amendment to an illogical, almost anti-democratic extreme. These are awful decisions that need to be overturned."

Wow, what an immature and temperamental attitude. A mature adult would say, 'your position is foolish,' then explain why. But you call me names and offer no reasons for your position. Therefore I say you are acting foolish and not being fair and rational. You are making it very easy to leave. I have to work today and will spend some time in here this weekend. But Monday I will migrate back to the Kos, 4UM, DU and other places and occasionally stop in every few weeks to say hi. Unless you just want to be punitive and react intemperately and ban me as if that is a punishment; which it is not.
By the way, I've known Jeff many years and we are very good friends. So my opinion of him not only is something you disagree with, I am someone who has worked as a volunteeer coordinator in his campaign when he won office. So I am definitely "to blame" more then one vote for getting this fine upstanding Senator elected to the U.S. Senate.

The problem is that Any of the 3 branches can immediately vote thru a provision that guts the Amendment in question. More to the point is how the USSA is in a State of Emergency since 9/11. And how the POTUS has the right to kill anyone he wants.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
All people have free speech rights. There are no limits. If you think there are limits show them to me. People who work for corporations don't lose the right to speak simply because they belong to a corporation. Buildings don't speak.
They only want to control their "OPPONENTS" campaign spending, not their own..... I.E. non-Leftards!!!

The amendment aims to accomplish three goals. It would:
* Include the authority to regulate and limit independent expenditures, such as those from Super PACs, made in support of or opposition to candidates;
* Not dictate any specific policies or regulations, but instead would allow Congress to pass campaign finance reform legislation that withstands constitutional challenges.
