Title: Tea Partiers Desert Perry For Cain, Sending Texas Governor Plummeting In Polls

Tea Party Republicans have deserted Rick Perry — at least for the moment — spending the Texas governor spiraling downward in a series of new national and state-specific polls released this week.

The new nationwide polls show Perry falling to third–and sometimes fourth–behind a newly restored frontrunner Mitt Romney and a newly competitive Herman Cain. The state polls provide a warning sign for Perry; in North Carolina, Nebraska and West Virginia, Cain is king (for the time being, at least) and Perry’s seems to be a second thought. Here are some of the key trends we’ve identified:

Mitt Romney (AP photo)

Romney regains first place as Perry drops behind Cain nationwide

A Washington Post-ABC News poll of Republican voters nationwide puts Romney at the head of the pack of potential nominees. Romney’s support stood at 25 percent — the same percentage he had in early September. But Perry plummeted 13 points, from 29 percent (first place) in September to 16 percent (tied for second place with Cain) now.

Cain seems to have taken almost all of the Perry deserters, as his 16 percent support marks a 12 percentage point jump from September.

A Quinnipiac University poll shows Perry dropping 10 points since late August to 14 percent. Even more striking is Cain’s shift to second place from sixth in late August–he now has 17 percent support, when a little over a month ago, he only had five percent support. Again, Romney’s stayed mostly steady, gaining four percentage points from August to leave him with 22 percent.

Republicans are tiring of Perry

Perry’s decline in the polls seems to indicate that he needs to get his messaging under control, as 44 percent of Republicans said that the more they hear of Rick Perry, the less they like him, according to the ABC-Post poll. With both Cain and Romney, however, more Republicans liked them the more they learned about them.

The Quinnipiac poll finds that the percentage of voters who view Perry favorably has remained at 22 percent since August. But  those who view him unfavorably has grown from 23 percent in August to 35 percent now.

When Romney and Perry are matched against each other in the Quinnipiac poll, Romney leads with almost every demographic group except for 18-34-year-olds, where Perry has a 43 percent to 38 percent edge. Romney even leads Perry among Tea Party supporters and Born Again or Evangelical Christians.

Tea Party sours on Perry

Tea Party Republicans were the most intense Perry backers in late August. Not now.  A CBS poll released this week showed Perry’s Tea Party backing down from 30 percent to 12 percent in just two weeks.  Tea Party Republicans completely reshuffled their support, with 24 percent choosing Cain, 17 percent backing Romney, 13 percent for Gingrich in third with 13 percent, and Perry lagging in fourth.

Romney does better against Obama

In a match-up between Perry and Romney against Obama, Romney leads the Democratic incumbent. Perry trails, if only barely.

Cain leads in new state polls

Although Romney comes out ahead nationally, Cain is leading in some three states polled by Public Policy Polling this past week. In North Carolina, Nebraska and West Virginia, Perry’s in fourth place, and Newt Gingrich has moved into second or is tied for second with Romney.

Cain holds the biggest lead in Nebraska with 30 percent support, and Gingrich comes far behind in second with 16 percent of the vote. There, Romney is third with 13 percent and Perry and Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., are tied for fourth with 10 percent support.

In North Carolina, Cain has a 10-point lead over Romney and Gingrich, 27 percent to 17 percent. Perry follows close behind with 15 percent.

And in West Virginia, Cain leads with 24 percent to Gingrich’s 18, Romney’s 16 and Perry’s 15. (2 images)

Cain like Perry is not ready for prime time. He doesn't stand a chance against Obama. So I beg u to nominate him ;-)
