Kudos to jwpegler for the video he posted on another thread that led to this one.
I drove my wife and daughters through Detroit in June 2010. They had no idea that places like this even existed.
During the heyday of the auto industry in the 1910s and 1920s, Detroit was a dynamic, wealthy city. They built some of the most magnificent architecture in the country.
Now, Detroit is a third-word hell hole, 87% black, and has lost over half of its population (from almost 2 million people in 1950 to barely 700,000 today).
The Great Society, War on Drugs, and other government programs are largely to blame.

I would say they are totally to blame. They have created multiple generations now that are uneducated and totally without the will to work or any ambition to do anything to improve themselves because they expect the government to do everything for them. Hell,Food Stamps wasn't enough,so now the government even feeds their children breakfast and lunch at school. The Entitled Generation is 3 deep now and getting deeper.
They have enough money to buy crack,but don't even think about suggesting they use "their" welfare money to pay for anything other than entertainment.
Other than the temperatures,Detroit might as well be Africa or the Caribbean.
