There is a charade playing out in Washington at the moment in respect of the completely meaningless "debt ceiling" which the US maintains as a relic from the days of the gold standard. We are told that at the US Treasury's account at the Federal Reserve Bank there will soon be no more taxpayers' dollars, and therefore the Fed will soon be unable to make any more payments or issue any more cheques on behalf of the Treasury. The money has run out. This is nonsense. It is a myth, and moreover it is a myth that Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke exploded in his recent testimony to a US congressional committee. Economics is one of the "soft" social sciences. It is by definition, about human behavior. Engineering is a "hard" physical science. It is about stuff and how stuff works. Human beings can discover how stuff works and use that information to design lots of products that human beings use, but it isn't about human behavior.

Engineering is a "hard" physical science. It is about stuff and how stuff works. Human beings can discover how stuff works and use that information to design lots of products that human beings use, but it isn't about human behavior. Engineering is a concrete science, while economics is mainly abstract. Those who can only think concretely will try to redefine it concrete terms. And will generally be disappointed in the results.
The fact that I have a checkbook and engage in banking is not due to math, it is an activity totally dependent on my humanness.

Yeah, I used to say similar things, too... about 20 years ago, before I started to get more educated on the subject. Economics IS about the accurate modeling of human behavior. If you have two products that are priced the same, where one has a higher level of (perceived) quality or utility over the other, than people will pick the one with the higher perceived value. While the field of economics cannot accurately determine the behavior of a single individual, it is extremely useful is predicting aggregate human behavior. Depending on the model used, the accuracy can be quite amazing. In this way, it is a science- as repeatable and useful as one of the "hard" sciences, like mechanical or electronic engineering. And I guarantee you- the field of economics is involved in your life every single day... when you buy a loaf of bread, when you put gas in your car, when you shop on amazon.com or craigslist.org, when you sell your used books at the local bookstore, or when you're sitting on your couch watching TV or listening to the radio... It's all around you, EVERY day... You seem to have this naive belief that economic theory doesn't matter or affect you. And that belief is utterly false.

Tax on income derived from labor was clearly an indirect tax (within the meaning of the Constitution) and never an issue. The 16th amendment settled the Constitutionality of a federal tax on income derived from property. By Fed are you referring the the federal government of the Federal Reserve?

So the 16th Amendment, illegally, took out the Constitution. Which is why the Amendment was needed in the first place.
I'm not sure what dicta or law you may be referring to but it was held as early as Pollock that a federal tax that was made directly on an individual's money "made", which included the wages of both labor and speculation, and that was levied solely as a % rather than as a head count apportionment was held as a direct tax. In other words, the only way that the Central government could levy a tax on income would be to determine how much is needed, divide it by the population, and then levy that same dollar amount on EvERYONE. This made it virtually inpossible to institute an income tax system - which was their intent.

Direct taxes must be Constitutionally apportioned to your State by the proportion of your State's representation (Art.1, Sect.2, Clause3 & Art1, Sect.9, Clause4). -- And, NO. The 16th amendment did not change this, the 16th amendment did not alter, add or remove any words from the original constitution, and the US Supreme Court confirmed in Stanton v. Baltic Mining Co. 240 US 103 (1915) that "… the 16th amendment conferred no new powers of taxation"
