The Water Cooler Title: Murdoch Fallout Spreads: Dow Jones CEO Les Hinton Resigns Les Hinton, the chief operating officer of Dow Jones, which publishes The Wall Street Journal, is resigning, the newspaper's website said late Friday. Word of Hinton's resignation comes amid an unprecedented wave of scandals that has rocked News Corporation's British newspaper holdings, forcing the resignation of News International CEO Rebekah Brooks earlier this morning. Hinton is the former chief of News International, which oversees global media mogul Rupert Murdoch's British newspapers. As one of Murdoch's top deputies for over 50 years, Hinton oversaw the News Corp. subsidiary while a number of its papers were allegedly engaging in phone hacking and bribery, targeting British officials, celebrities, terrorist attack victims, the families of dead soldiers and others. He's on record as claiming just one of the company's journalists was responsible for the phone hacking, which he allegedly determined after an internal investigation. "Let me emphasize one point - News Corporation is not Rupert Murdoch," Murdoch wrote in a memo to Dow Jones employees. "It is the collective creativity and effort of many thousands of people around the world, and few individuals have given more to this company than Les Hinton." "I want you all to know the pride and pleasure I have taken working at Dow Jones for the past three-and-a-half years. I have never been with better, more dedicated people, or had more fun in a job," Hinton wrote in his resignation letter. U.S. officials with the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation have formally launched investigations into the New York-based News Corp. to determine whether any of its employees targeted U.S. citizens or officials in their schemes. British officials were already investigating the firm. Australia, where Murdoch is a citizen, said it too is considering launching an investigation. So far, nine arrests have been made by British police. Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread Top • Page Up • Full Thread • Page Down • Bottom/Latest OMG!!! #25. To: All (#24) And so. To continue. "Rebekah Still Doesn’t Get It by craig on July 19, 2011 9:06 am in Uncategorized The continuing hubris of the News International lot is really quite astonishing. These people do not seem to have realised they no longer have the world in their pocket. I thought this one really took the biscuit; Rebekah Brooks’ lawyer complains that the police have damaged her reputation. To which the reply is, what reputation? When you consider how Hayman, Coulson and Brooks conspired to trash the reputation of newly murdered Jean Charles De Menezes by publishing deliberate lies about him, that is sick. Even more sick when you consider that Cressida Dick, who orchestrated Menezes’ murder, is now in charge of the anti-terrorist squad as a result of all the resignations." We're to the 7/7 Bombing now.... Unraveling fast: Anthrax/ Fort Dietrick Wikimedia - Bruce Ivins in 2003 Salon, July 19, 2011 Ever since the FBI claimed (for a second time) that it had discovered in 2008 the identity of the anthrax attacker -- the recently-deceased-by-suicide Army researcher Bruce Ivins -- it was glaringly obvious, as I documented many times, that the case against him was exceedingly weak, unpersuasive and full of gaping logical, scientific, and evidentiary holes. So dubious are the FBI's claims that serious doubt has been raised and independent investigations demanded not by marginalized websites devoted to questioning all government claims, but rather, by the nation's most mainstream, establishment venues, ones that instinctively believe and defend such claims -- including the editorial pages of the nation's largest newspapers, leading scientific journals, the nation's preeminent science officials, and key politicians from both parties (led by those whose districts, or offices, were most affected by the attacks).
#26. To: All (#25) "Since that initial wave of doubt, the FBI's case against Ivins has continuously deteriorated even further. In February of this year, a panel of the National Academy of Sciences released its findings solely regarding the bureau's alleged scientific evidence (independent investigations of the full case against Ivins have been successfully blocked by the Obama administration), and found -- as The New York Times put it -- that "the bureau overstated the strength of genetic analysis linking the mailed anthrax to a supply kept by" Ivins; the Washington Post headline summarized the impact of those findings: "Anthrax report casts doubt on scientific evidence in FBI case against Bruce Ivins." But the biggest blow yet to the FBI's case has just occurred as the result of an amazing discovery by PBS' Frontline, which is working on a documentary about the case with McClatchy and ProPublica: The Justice Department has called into question a key pillar of the FBI's case against Bruce Ivins. . . . On July 15 [], Justice Department lawyers acknowledged in court papers that the sealed area in Ivins' lab -- the so-called hot suite -- did not contain the equipment needed to turn liquid anthrax into the refined powder that floated through congressional buildings and post offices in the fall of 2001." www.salon.com/news/opinio.../07/19/anthrax/index.html
#27. To: All (#26) An unholy alliance, surely? Mr Murdoch is the co-owner, with Prince Walid, of Fox News - one of the most virulently anti-Muslim television stations in the world. The station gives a megaphone to the likes of Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly and Sarah Palin. In the US, Fox's role was to throw gallons of petrol on the flames Islamophobia which were leading to the burning of the Holy Quran by vigilantes. Then there is the so-called "Ground Zero Mosque" controversy. The planned building was, of course, not at Ground Zero. It was not a mosque but an Islamic centre. The centre was partially funded by Prince Walid, the co-owner with Murdoch of Islamophobic media fire-raisers including Fox News and the New York Post. Prince Walid it will be recalled was roundly insulted by the government of New York City when they returned the cheque he donated to the victims of the 9/11 attacks. A glutton for punishment no doubt. Murdoch's newspapers in Britain are little better than their US-counterparts and include photographs and sexualised images which would never see the light of day in Riyadh, the Saudi capital. As a whole it is safe to say that Murdoch's nearly 200 newspapers - and his television stations in so far as he can compel the latter which are more tightly regulated - are bastions of fanatically pro-Israel, anti-Muslim bigotry. Yet they are co-owned by a member of the Saudi Royal family who not only approves of these practices, but regards the mogul Murdoch as his "good friend".
#28. To: All (#27) When they couldn’t palm it off on Dr. Steven Hatfill – because he bravely fought back, and was fully exonerated after a life-shattering battle – they looked around for another scapegoat, and found a likely one in Ivins. One profile, published in the Los Angeles Times, starts out like this: “He roamed the University of Cincinnati campus with a loaded gun. When his rage overflowed, the brainy microbiology major would open fire inside empty buildings, visualizing a wall clock or other object as a person who had done him wrong.” Ivins was convicted in the media, and driven to suicide, and yet the same media has since joined with several prominent politicians and scientists to challenge the verdict. The government admits the evidence [.pdf] against Ivins is purely circumstantial, and is coming under increasing pressure to reopen the investigation as, one by one, the pillars of its case against Ivins have collapsed.
#29. To: All (#28) What was it about the relationship with Murdoch that made Tony Blair feel it was appropriate to take a phone call from a newspaper proprietor just hours prior to - ordering the country's armed forces to war?
